So here it is,

Nice big gray rat snake, with the orange-ish belly. I have seen this coloration around here but thought I'd share.

Back off to the woods ... I placed her just over the back fence line.

Nice find. We have found and relocated several Gray Rat snakes about that size. They were eating the eggs in my chicken coop. Very nice snakes, never tried to bite or get aggressive. Found all of them in the morning hours between 7 A.M. and 10 A.M., the chickens sound the alarm when the snake enters the coop.

How do you go about catching wild snakes like that? As fiesty as my one year old corn is I would be a little intimidated by a wild snake of that size.

lol... this one was fiesty hence the wussy gloves. We actually get 6-10 in the shed every year. This one just had the cool orange-ish tint.

Cool pics! I've run across grey rat snakes, but none with that nifty belly color. I must be short on sleep, though. When I read the thread title, I was trying to figure out what kind of shed the mouse had produced!

Sometimes you see if you can gently pin them with something and get control of the head. Then, after the snake relaxes, you can free handle it. This usually just takes a few minutes. Other times you just take the bite- especially if the snake is going to disappear if you don't.

Sometimes you pick them up and they act like they have been a pet their whole life.

Like Nanci mentioned, you could grab them behind the head... I find it easier to grab the tail and ease them just outside the shed. Once they settle a little you can slowly run your other hand down the belly(being careful not to bend a scale) until you can handle them with ease. Also like Nanci mentioned, some you can just pick-up and they are like "hey, cool a free ride to the back fence" lol.

Hey Buzz, VERY COOL FIND !! I love the Mocha coloration. The ones I find around here look more like Black Rats.........very dark grays and black.

Cool looking snake !!

Thanks everyone,

Walter,
The coloration of these guys here vary so much down here, its amazing. I had a few that were tough to put back.

Here is another one from a few months ago, with a full belly of mice. She ate 2 adult mice and a fuzzy. I snapped a few shots and sent her back over the fence.
