Disappointment: First '07 Hatchling

You wait all season, and then Murphy slaps you in the face. My pewter x pewter clutch is on day 66 so I've been checking on this clutch (peeping through the incubator window) constantly for two weeks. I came home from work and one guy was out of the egg. He's a dome-head. :( Now I'm worried. I sure hope the other hatchlings in the clutch are ok. There are a few tiny slits on some of the eggs, but nothing else is pipping yet.

I should have already euthanized him, but he seems reasonably healthy, if a little small. And he also seems to have absorbed a lot of yolk. I entertained the idea of giving him away if I could get him feeding, but I dunno... I might wait for a few more to hatch before making a decision. Maybe nature will have taken its course by then anyway.

Whats the definition of "dome-head" and what effects does it have on a baby corn?

Sorry to hear about this Dean :(

Aww, that's a bummer. Sorry to hear that. Two insults in one day! Here's hoping that the rest of the clutch is ok. Vodka's on me. :(

That Murphy guy is a bully. And he's in rare form, it seems, this year. Sorry to hear about your first hatchling. Hopefully the rest are right. Other than the dome, he's got nice color.....so that's something to look forward to in his siblings.

Sorry to hear about this Dean :(
I read a lot of old threads about it here. It seems to be a developmental abnormality, like cleft palate is in mammals. I guess depending on the severity of the abnormality, it can be fatal. This guy's "dome" is fairly pronounced, but he doesn't have the "underbite" jaw I've seen in some. There were a couple of accounts of people raising them. I don't really know any other effects it might have on a corn. That's one of the reasons I don't think I should waste resources trying to keep it alive. It could have other hidden time-bomb abnormalities. :(

Thanks for the info Dean. It sure is pretty... what lovely abberancies!

If you have any doubts in your mind, then cull it... I know I would.

Darn shame Dean, sorry. In reading some older posts, some had snakes that outgrew it. I also got the impression it was caused by premature hatching, which doesn't seem to be the case here? Here's to the rest of the clutch!
Gotta keep a good thought!

Thanks for the encouragement. :) Hopefully, the rest of the clutch will hatch by tomorrow, and there will be better news.

The more babies you produce, the more, numbers-wise based on percentages, you will produce like that. One percent doesn't sound too bad when you only produce a couple of hundred babies. But a couple of thousand, well then things start looking pretty depressing. There are a LOT of things that can go wrong during development. Some things will make you wonder how in the world that animal ever made it to hatching.....

Man, that is the worst! I hate when I have problems with the first clutch. No matter how long I've been doing this, I always freak out during incubation and worry I've forgotten how to hatch corns. It's not until I hatch my first healthy batch that I can get off the pins and needles and stop worrying myself sick. :( I hope the others are fine.

That stinks Dean. It does have gorgeous coloring too. Maybe Murphy will just give you a little slap and the rest will be ok. Don't discount late pippers as sometimes it's for the better. If he seems ok I'd give him a chance but not push it (but then again I am a softie when it comes to my babies). Keep us updated!

Aww here's hoping the rest of them turn out fine.
And if your gut feeling says that this baby isn't going tohave a good quality of life don't feel bad about culling it.

murphy has been kickin me in the stones here... he must be racking up his frequent flyer miles!!! Bi-coastal jerk!!!

Sorry about that Dean!

I'm sorry Dean (and hatchling). If it's just a prematurity thing, won't he probably develop out of it? I think you should find out. It'd be a shame to euthanise them if it was developemental and would progress to a normal stage after hatching.

Sorry to hear that Dean :( . Here's to the rest of the season handing you some anti-Murphy luck !

Thanks guys. The second one made it out of the egg overnight. It was a dome-head too, and dead by the time I got to him. :(

well Dean, I am sorry to hear your first clutch started out like that. Big hugs to ya guy! I hope that the rest turns out some pleasant surprises for you.
