African Soft Fur rat pics

RobbiesCornField

Bring it on.
Or Multimammate Mice. Whichever you prefer. The original trio came from Kathy Love. Thanks again, Kathy! :D I couldn't be happier with them. They produce like crazy, and are just so dang funny to watch.

Yin-yang rats, anyone?

Thanks for looking!

What an adoreable bunch! I love how the babies come out all ugly and hairy LOL

Thanks! It's so much easier to feed them off when they're still hairless and pinks. Although I still don't feel too much remorse about whacking 'em and tossing 'em into a snake tank. I do feel a teensy bit bad every now and then when they've just started opening their eyes, though.

Aww they are cute. I wouldn't be able to feed them off, I can't use any mice or rats that have color or spots (I'm odd). I dislike those red eyed whited rodents for some reason lol.

Cute Robbie, I ended up getting a female from a friend and Carolyn emailed me to say that the mom was giving birth yesterday. How many babies do the females usually average a litter? What about first litters? I can't wait to get a few groups of them going- finally some live pinks for problem feeders.

Mine seem to have an average littler of around 6, but the first litter for one of my girls was 14! The other was 8. I hope they start producing like crazy for ya!

Wow, Robbie 6-8 seems low. Mine are like your 14 girl. I am seriouly thinking of tanking the mice and going with the ASF's and rats only. Maybe keep a colony or two of mice for fun.

Wonderful looking bunch you got going....

One Goofball, nice oneconsidering the pic, lol.

I have two colonies now but the trick for me is giving them a larger cage space. They didn't seem to like the smaller cages in the mousr rack. I now have them in ten gallon aquariums.

You really want to have a treat, catch a bug (they like moths and hard shelled bugs) and toss just ONE in with them. They will run like cray and the others will chase them to steal it, but then immediately they are on the run with their loot. Funny to watch.

Just wish the babies were a bit smaller so the hatchling corns could eat them.

I've been thinking about using ASFs as feeders when I get started but since I'm going to be buying young snakes I should stick to mice. I've got four ten gallons available so theres plenty of room, will mice form a nursing group like rats do?

If you grab the pinks within an hour or two, they're definitely small enough for hatchling corns! That's what one of my baby corns exclusively feeds on.

I'm not sure about mice, but these guys definitely form a nursing group. Both moms in the trio will nurse when one gives birth, but that's usually because the other mom is pregnant at the same time. LOL

Hmmmm, can they be shipped without harm? And who can I buy them from?

James look up Dixie reptile show. There usually plenty at these shows.. Not sure where Adel, GA is but the Dixie show is every month in Birmingham, AL.

Hmmm, thats a good three hundred miles from me. The Repticon Jacksonville show is closer but I can't find any information on the legal status of ASF in Florida.

Fl is cool they are legal.... now I have to look up Adel.....oh snap your not that far away from AL or FL.

What makes ASFs better than normal rats? I've never heard of them before. Unfortunately, being in Ca, they're probably illegal here. But I'll try to check when I get a chance.

I would love to try a trio of these. I really dont like mice at all.... would be nice if I could get something and replace them with.

But I doubt there is anyone near enough to me for me to be able to get any anytime soon :(

Asf's (african softfurred rat) are a smaller than normal rats. They tend to be nippy but multiple fast and provide a little more bulk as a food item(protein, fat, calcium ect..) Yes, I beleive they are illegal in CA.....
