Couple Snakes

[Insert Witty Commentary]
Well...I got a new 105mm macro lens and flash unit in anticipation of road cruising season this year. Thought I would practice on a couple of pets...

Thanks for looking!

Those are NICE pictures of nice snakes. Hey, Chris, thread-hijack warning -- do you know anything about old Hasselblads?

Sammy snake! Woaa.

What brand of lens are you using Chris? I have the Sigma 105, which funnily enough I have just been using to snap some random shots after 9 months of it being tucked away in a drawer. I need to get my photography butt back in gear!

Funny enough, I'm using a Sigma 105mm f/2.8 DG macro. I am absolutely in love with it. Outstanding lens, in my opinion. I'm going out to shoot a bunch of albino rattlers in a couple weeks...I can't wait...

No, I know nothing about Hasselblads. I've never even seen one in real life. I know they are all worth a small fortune. You mentioned on my blog that it was film...is it a 4X5? You can get digital backs for them, now. REALLY expensive...

Yes, I think it's the 4x5. I only know a tiny bit about using it but I'd like to learn.

Great photos, I love the tortoise especially. I think torts have the cutest little grumpy faces!

Nice pictures. That Greyband is gorgeous, makes me want to go buy the one I saw the other day. :)

Very nice Chris, I had th eoppurtunity to pick up a grey banded a few weeks ago but declined ( Not an established feeder). What kind of bedding is that BTW?

Albino rattlesnakes huh? ;) I am happy to see you posting pics again :) Your snakes and photos are beautiful.. Looks like the lens is well worth it :)

Don't be a stranger ;)

Bing! Exactly the same one :) If you look at my recent thread showing Siren, you can see just how far in you can go with that lens. I really want to try the stacking lens sets you get to make even more from your macro les.

Extension tubes. Wonderful pieces of kit to have around. I have a set of closeup dioptic filters that cut my minimum focusing ditrance in half. Also handy, buf not nearly as nice as the extension tubes...

And yea...this lens is deep. MUCH deeper than I was expecting. For a 105mm lens, it really gives you the ability to reach out there and bring back a shot...

Extension tubes! THATS the word I forgot. They are expensive, but I have seen the results from some really nice sets, and I am sure they would be worth it if used properly. Welcome to the world of macro, it's far more interesting away in here ;)

I've seen people get caried away with them, too.

As it stands, the minimum focusing distance on this lens is right around 1 foot, or about 1/3 meter. At 105mm, with a digital sensor giving it an effective focal length of 210mm on a 35mm film camera, I can't think of very many things that I enjoy shooting that I need to get much closer too. In fact, I find myself backing off to avoid zooming in too close.

These snake pictures were taken from about 2-3 feet away...

Thats what I don't like about shooting full body shots with a macro lens, you have to be standing a fair distance back. I love using the macro lens to it's full capacity and REALLY getting invasive and right in there, literally under the skin. I actually use my macro lens as a way to spot spider mites etc as you would NEVER see them with the naked eye. One shot when buying a new T will tell me if the spidie is clear or not. If not, the seller gets a new one ripped. Don't go selling me things with parasites, my macro lens shall reveal all!

Off topic kind of.

Chris, What is the substrate in the first picture with the Alterna?
