Yeah 150K is a down payment on houses in Seattle, so I know your pain Jenn.

But still that is a lot of cash for a little lizard.

Everyone go grab your brooms!

you cant question the price on something so rare though can you lol
he can charge whatever he wants and has done so...

Well, not 1.5 mil (allthough more and more houses seem to creep up into that range. I'd say in the area I live in, the average houses seem to range from $500,000-$800,000. Hence, I rent!!! *buys lotto ticket*

Ditto. =P

You can get a house for $150k in some areas of SoCal...but you don't want to live there - *really*.

$150,000 would pay nearly all of my mortgage!

Definitely not worth that price. Why pay that for a two-headed lizard when I could have a two-headed snake instead? lol

LOL, what in the middle of the desert?

One would usually like to put more than 10% down on a home, the mortgage rates most of the banks quote you will be assuming that you're putting 20% down. However around here, interest only loans are very popular around here just so people can get into some sort of house in hopes the value will go up.

Condos/Townhomes run around $300,000-$400,000. Tiny piece of crap fixer upper homes will go for over $500,000. I live in a mobile home right now, I own the home, rent the space. The city I live in has a law that regulates/limits how much the landlord can raise space rent. We always planned to upgrade to a house, but at these prices I don't know if that will ever happen.

For those of you that don't believe it's true, or if you are just incredibly bored, check out some listings....at least check out the first one for a short glimpse of the pathetic irony that I can not buy a home in the town I was raised in.

Cost of home $589,000 Down Payment suggested $117,000 Estimated Monthly Payment $2,825

99 year old home. 2 bdrm, 1 bath (1 tub, no shower). No garage. 876 sq ft.
Back in our teenage days when my husband and I were less than perfect citizens, the local drug dealer lived here. The entire house is crap inside and out. Basically people are paying the money only to shell out more cash to level the home and start from scratch on a 9,500 sq. ft. lot. Did I mention the lot is in a bad area of town?

Sorry for the rant. It makes me mad.

oh man, and i thought housing was ridiculous here. our ex-landlord just sold the house we used to rent for $102,500. and it was a DUMP. it was sliding off the foundation. the electrical and plumbing were sketchy. and it was in a bad neighborhood. we lived down the street from an apt complex where someone got murdered last year. and our neighbors would get burglarized all the time. they didnt touch our house, we have 3 big dogs that made the bad guys think twice. it was a money pit. and our landlord bought it 5 years ago for only $48k. real estate prices are insane.

$150 000 in Cali does not get you very much.. I have the same kind of arrangements as Carol.. As it is the only roof over our heads we can afford.. And people wonder why I am looking homeward instead of staying in So Cal..

Regards.,... T and J

I guess its just the different costs of living. In LA, quite a few people could probably afford those prices, but it doesn't factor in everywhere else.

But I have to say it again, you couldn't pay me to live in California. Everything is overpriced. I didn't even like visiting.

A few years ago around here $69,000 would get you a 3 bdrm, 1300sqft, w/ basement home in town. In the country, acreage is only $2,000-5,000 per acre, depending on location and utilities present.

For $46,000

For $68,000

For $115,000

Despite the lack of high speed internet around these parts...I like BFE. ;)

Which is exactly why I love living out here.. :) Not 30 minutes from me $150,000.00 will buy you a decent house and an acre or three to put it on.
But! Just down the street a little ways should you happen to have a view of the river your home could be worth a half million with hardly any land under it.
Who needs a view of the river anyways?

All that money for a house on the left coast, and when the big one hits, I'll be one of the first land speculators for the beautiful new Arizona Bay. :grin01:

jazz

that's really astonishing...what on earth do you have to do for a living to be able to afford a house that's $500,000 for a dump?

Yeah, the CA prices were something. Before moving up here I was in very affluent Marin County, yes the land of hot tubbers... and I too found the most affordable way to live there was a mobile home.
But surprisingly, the houses here in Southern Oregon are very pricey as well. So I still have a mobile, only difference is that up here jobs pay less so it's a lot harder to scrape together the space rent every month. Maybe it's a West Coast thing. The funny thing is that all the people who own homes here seem to be retirees, the ones who bought before prices went up, so it's a bunch of young people working their arses off and then forking all their money over to the geezers. To paraphrase what Carol said in her post 'Sorry for ranting, it just makes me so mad'.
I still have not given up on the dream to own a real house someday but that day is not exactly looming on the horizon. Still, I do not think I could live in the 'bible belt' part of the U.S. even if houses were free there.
It's almost comforting to hear from you guys that also live in mobiles, It may be a Jerry Springer trailer trash stereotype but not all of us that are living in manufactured dwellings are missing all our teeth, collecting welfare and doing crack...
Anyways the price of that one lizard would get you TEN of these:
