A snake by any other name...

Kiss My Hearse
I just wanted to share a peculiar story on how I'm going to name one of the babies I'll be hatching this year. This is the only egg from a female who died. The baby will be a creamsicle (unless both parents were hiding hets and this one turns out to be something other than amel). It should be hatching in about 2 weeks.

So here's the story. Last year sometime, my husband and I were watching a show (don't even remember the name of it) about a guy who gets sent around the world on stupid adventures. It wasn't fictional, either. In one episode he went to Germany and his task was to come up with a way to warn tourists about the vipers that inhabit the vinyards in that area. Apparently many people get bitten each year. So his clever idea was to catch a viper and paint "achtung" on it. He had an assistant catch one and hold onto it while he painted the word in non-toxic paint down the length of this poor snake's back! We were laughing so hard that we were crying! They let the snake go and let it serve as a warning to tourists that vipers are dangerous. Helloo? If you can read this, YOU'RE TOO CLOSE!!

So, our little creamsicle will be named Achtung. It's ridiculous, I know, but we decided at the time that we had to name a snake after we saw that. It was too hilarious to pass up.

Any other cool, funny, stupid ways you've come up with names??

For Non-corn snake reptiles: My step-daughter is into Goth and has 3 New Caledonian Crested Geckos (Rhacodactylus ciliatus) and she named them after Anne Rice's charaters in her Vampire Series. Their names are: 'Lestat', 'Maharet' and 'Makare'. She had a fourth one by the name of 'Akasha', but she died. She was attacked by a swarm of black ants. We couldn't save her - she died the next day. I love the Anne Rice Vampire and Mayfair Witch series. I've read most of them.

As for my Crested Geckos, I've named them after islands in the Oceana areas: Maui, Moloka'i, Sumatra, Bali, Timor, Tiborun, Cebu, Tasmainia (Taz for short) and Freddie (okay...Freddie is not an island...I wanted to name one of my geckos Freddie). These type of names would not be fitting for snakes, in my opinion.

As for my newly acquired Corn Snakes, I'm a little stuck with names right now....I currently have a red stripe x motley and an amel. I haven't sexed the snakes, yet, so that makes the 'naming' a little harder. Since one of my corns is a red stripe/motley I was thinking of naming it after a 'fire god/dess'. The name 'Pele' (Peh-leh) comes to mind. I was also thinking of naming it 'Maharet'. I was thinking of naming the other one after an Aztec/Mayan/Incan god/dess, but haven't found a name that fits it, yet.

Here are may corn snakes:

Achtung! Bless You! J/K, I like the name.
Susan mentioned a site called 'Encyclopedia mythica' in another post and I have been checking it out since my snakes are named after greek mythology. I have been thinking 'Pandora' and 'Arachne' for the next females and "Atlas' for the next male. If I run out of greek ones this site also has norse, maya, aztec, etc myths so I will not run out of names any time soon lol, thanks Susan...

I love pet naming stories!

I got my cats from a friend of a friend who found them when they showed up in her yard one day. She named them Emmet and Nick. Well, Emmet definitely didn't look like an Emmet...he was always peeping around chairs and bookcases, flinging himself out to attack me as I walked by or whatever. So I renamed him Cato as in Cato from the Pink Panther movies...

Nick became Nicky...because "Nicky!" is much easier to yell when said cat is doing something wrong (getting on the counter, scratching the curtains, etc.).

So, we have Nicky and Cato. =)

Our ball python is Cleo, named after Queen Cleopatra. The Latin taxonomy acknowledges the lore that Queen Cleopatra would "wear" trained ball pythons around her wrists, so we thought it appropriate.

The name for our Surinam was tough; I wanted something Spanish or Portugese to go along with her South American origin or maybe something related to her colors or at least something elegent. We talked about for a couple of hours - or rather, I kept spewing names, hehe. It was almost Elizabeth, but we settled on Carmen, which I think covers all three of my desired requirements. =)

Of course, now we have a house full of "C"s and "ick"s: Cass, Cleo, Carmen, and Cato...Rick (my fiance) and Nicky...very strange, hehe!

Well, I have a pair of corns that I named Florence and Normandie (Flo and Norm for short) after the epicenter of the L.A. Riots in the early 90's. I was driving through South Central one day and thought of it.
I have a Crimson named Glen because the logo for the band The Misfits is the Crimson Ghost and Glen Danzig is the singer of The Misfits.
And my Chihuahua is named Kiya after Willow's wife in the movie Willow. Why? Because they are both little :)

I have one named "Dash" after he escaped in my truck and spent a few days in my dashboard. I have a "Live Only", guess what she eats? I have one extremely food aggresive candy cane named "Shelia". Why Shelia? Because if I ever forget to feed her first, and she smells the mouse before it is in her cage, she will chase and bite anything that moves. I usually toss one in while she is sleeping and all is good. However, if she is on the prowl smelling mice and you open her bin, she will come at me full speed, exiting her cage to chase me down the hall. The whole time I throw whatever mice I have at her, but she is more triggered by movement and ignores them. If I don't run, she will bite my shoes. At this point I call my hubby who puts on his best Steve Irwin voice and shouts, "Look at that Shelia, she'll bite ya alright!", while he assists me.
I had one named Psycho *itch... guess why? I also have a "Kamikaze" because he was always getting himself into trouble as a hatchling and would "jump" right out of your hand and on to the floor.

My first two were Oz for Ozzie Osborn and Izzy because it sounded good with Oz, than Izzie died. Now I have Oz(male amel), Snick(male cremsicle), and Snicky (female normal, thanks to Jen for popping her). But while I sat with Oz for almost four years a lone snake, Snick and Snicky came to live with us this year and I'll be adding more babies this summer. think I'm hooked susan

Ironic.....

Harleybabe - kind of ironic that "Akasha" was the snake who died..

'Akasha' was a crested gecko, but yeah, it was kind of ironic that she died. She was my step-daughter's favorite gecko. I felt so bad for her. The ant attack was so severe that there was no way she couldn't survive.

So far I only have snakes and one crested gecko. I wanted to do something unique - like the islands or characters from a book - but couldn't find anything I really liked (Glad I didn't do the Anne Rice novels since someone beat me to it! :) )

So my gecko ended up being named Banzai - because he is kind of kamikaze. He is constantly jumping off of everything high up!

My kingsnake is Malachai - just always thought it was a cool name for a snake. And my cornsnake is Clementine. Not sure why, but I had that stupid song stuck in my head one day so she ended up with the name.

I have a whole list of names from sci-fi movies, greek, roman, norse, egyptian gods and deities and the like as well to choose from. But I think what I am going to do is starting naming my herps after hockey players. I love hockey and some of those European and Russian names are great! Bryzgalov, Giguere, Khabibulin, Lecavelier, Datsyuk etc...

What about naming future Crested Geckos and Corn snakes after some of the characters and dragons from Anne (and Todd) McCaffrey's books...like naming one of them after one of the dragons, "Ramoth"? :)

Hahahaha. I'm mad at you for thinking of both of those before me. Here I have 3.5 Kings and I didn't think of that while naming any of them.

Actually, I forgot about those. My Mexican Black King Pair are named Frank and Dalia. Frank after Frank Black from the Pixies (one of my favorite bands) and Dalia after the Black Dalia (another little piece of L.A. history.)

I'm familiar with her story. Maybe you can get a Mickey Cohen in there, too. :)

Mexican Black King - Nighttrain
