AWFUL way to prove hets

Caryl

I just have to share this with folks who'll understand. I got ill this Spring and had humidity issues in the incubator which went unnoticed due to illness. Lost a lot of eggs as result of that. So, yesterday was day 64 for my single lovely healthy egg. It was from Artephius (caramel blood) and Tulip (amel stripe). I was hoping to check Tulip's het caramel status as she has that "het caramel" look. I had no info about Artephius's hets and this was a way to check a couple of possibilities. I figured even if I got all normals I could get some gorgeous F2s.

When I checked on it after lunch there were three minute slits (about 1-1.5 mm) and leaky egg goop. I was thrilled, of course. At bedtime no progress, though there was one other tiny slit. I checked with a flashlight, saw movement, and went to bed hopeful but worried.

No change this morning. The slits were still tiny and nothing had changed. After lunch I decided to open one further, which I carefully did. Still nothing in two hours, so I started cutting the shell away. There was a beautiful, apparently perfect male butter motley baby dead inside. No kinks. No tangles. Seemingly no reason not to be alive, but DIE nonetheless.

So I know that Tulip is het caramel. I know Artephius is het motley and het amel. I know that the odds of proving all three of those in a clutch of one are miniscule. But I'd rather have a live normal and still be wondering.

I'm going to watch a movie and try not to think about this anymore tonight. Thanks for letting me vent.

sorry that had to happen ;-; and it is okay to vent. It is terrible the hand we are dealt sometimes and I hope you feel better.

I know there isnt much i can do from here, but say sorry for your loss ):, and let you know i feel ya.

That is a terrible way to prove hets. I lost an entire clutch last year that proved both parents het motley snow. I hope next year it much better for you.

I'm so sorry Caryl! That's a horrible way to prove out hets, but I really hope you are feeling much much better after your illness and I hate to say it, but there's always next year :)

Sorry about that. My first clutch this year went from 6 good eggs down to 2. One of them dimpled and sat and nothing happened. When it started to look sad I opened it up to find the same thing. It was underdeveloped even though it was old enough. The last egg has gone a week longer and is now starting to dimple. I hope it makes it.

At least clutch 2 came out perfectly (so far). 15 good eggs and 13 of them out. This clutch is 2 weeks younger than the first. It's like they decide when they want to come out... I tell ya.

Thanks for the kind thoughts, everyone. I always feel better after sharing experiences here. It's not that my family doesn't empathize, but you guys actually sympathize. And yes, there's next year.

I'm hoping Tulip will lay a second clutch within the next day or two. She shed last week and has a few egg bumps. If she does, maybe at least one will make it.

Hmm... my post wasn't quite accurate yesterday. The last 2 snakes were dead in the shell when everyone else came out. 13 happy snakes and 2 who didn't make it.

Good luck on Tulip's next clutch! So sorry to hear about her first batch, and that lone little butter :( I love butters . . . .
Thanks. I love butters too, and this little guy had a cool motley pattern. I'm hoping she lays and that some are fertile. I know second clutches are usually smaller and have more slugs than do first clutches. All good thoughts are welcome!

Congrats on the 13, and sorry about the two. It boggles my mind that they can grow, develop right along, cut a slit, and die without hatching.

So sorry for your loss... that really sucks. :( Hope you have better luck with the next clutch!

oh no! that is an awful story. i'm so sorry to hear of it.

murphy was very generous, and then took it back! how dare he. that truly is heartbreaking, and i wish you the best of luck on the next clutch!

oh Caryl... I am sorry :(
I wish you the best possible outcome next year... and you know, I tend to believe that God sometimes chooses holdbacks too...

It is an unfortunate and unavoidable part of breeding and keeping animals.

That's beautifully put.
Corns aren't my first venture into breeding animals, and you're right that such things are indeed part of the whole. They're never pleasant, but the payoff is the joy when things go well.
