Baby Rosy Boas

As some of you know, Murphy hit me about as hard as he could this season. The season was a bust-- an absolute disaster. There wasn't a single project that he didn't either mostly or completely destroy. I guess it's one reason that I've been kind of scarce around here. I've been too "snake depressed" to participate much. But I guess Murphy felt that his work here was done, and he left, probably to plague some of you.

So today I was walking by a rack, and I noticed my female rosy boa nosing around the front of her tub. But then I did a double-take, realizing that she had shrunk to a tiny size! Excited, I took out her tub and found her with five new babies! I was getting worried about the female. Rosy gestation is typically 115 to 140 days, and yesterday was day 139. She was HUGE, so I knew she was still gravid, but I was worried that she was having some complication that was preventing her from giving birth. I guess she was just cooking those guys until they were completely done-- the babies are MONSTERS.

Last year she gave birth to four babies that were between 20g and 21g. This year she gave me five, and they're all between 25g and 27g! No wonder she looked like she was about to explode. They are all perfect little replicas of their Borrego-locality parents, and they're all as healthy and chunky as I could hope for. That's a good litter size for a rosy, so I'm very happy. It's about time something went right for me.

Thanks Nanci. They ARE cute, but not in the way that baby corns are cute. They really do look exactly like mini-replicas of the adults. They never really have a "baby" look.

Yeah, that's the last remnant of a bite I got from my '06 Lava about a week ago. It wasn't his fault. He likes to strike-feed, and I was dangling a mouse in front of him, but his tail was hanging out of the feeding tub. So I grabbed his tail to shove it in the tub, and WHAM! He got me pretty good.

I am glad this worked out for you, I tried to place my 2 together this year and the male thought it was feeding time. Maybe next year.

I'm glad it worked out too. I brumated them at about 55* for all of November, December, and January. I fed them through February and most of March, then I put them together for a week near the end of March. I never saw them mate, and I never saw any "evidence". I wasn't even sure that they had successfully bred, but about a month later she began looking very big in her back half.

I'm not one to stay down for long... just not my style, yanno? After several slug laying and egg dying fests, I had a bunch of hets for lava and motley hatch. That was fun and restorative by its self.

I was wondering why you'd been so quiet Dean! Sorry to hear you've had a mostly horrible season. Congrats on the turn around litter of miniature rosies though, they always look adorable when they are that small! Like finger sized sock puppets! lol
