Hi,
I have heard so many different stories about what bedding to use and what not to use, so if everybody could do the poll just to see what is the most used bedding.

Thanks

Ria

I was using coconut bark, but I switched to packing paper with paper towel on the top. I found a mite on my snake , so that was the reason for the switch, just so I can see if the treatment worked also it's easier to keep an eye on the poop. I just got her about 3 1/2 weeks ago and the paper towel makes it easier to see what's going on, I'll go back to the coconut bark later when she's bigger.

I use...

I use bark chips. Dunno what they come from but I'm pretty sure it's a tree or some sort rather than coconut.
I find that it helps keep the moisture in and this contributes to the humidity of my snake's home. :p

I use bark as well. Most of the bark sold in pet stores are made of chipped fir or shredded cypress.

Reptile bark, currently. I prefer the Aspen and Lava, our first cornsnake, appeared to prefer it also because she was small and it was easier to burrow in that the reptile bark. However, it was very drying to her and she had great difficulty shedding. The reptile bark appeared to be less drying. With Silver, our new boy, we have used reptile bark so far and damp paper towels for humidity (we are in a dry climate), but as he has just shed and appears to like to burrow I will probably switch to Aspen until he is ready to shed again. I want to be able to find him and he can hide too well in the dark reptile bark, whereas the Aspen is light colored.

astro turf.. which aint on your poll....

cheap.. and better looking than paper (not that I'm complaining about towles.. cos my 2 month old is on towels for a bit.. and it's so much easier..)

but i use two sheets of astro turf.. and once one is dirtird i switch it.. and then clean the old one ready for the next change...

I've just switched to paper towels for my hatchlings and babies up to 1 year. My bigger guys use Aspen. Just felt a little un-easy using Aspen for my younger one since I feed in their containers. I put everyones food on a seperate little plate but you always have the one that will drag it off.

Astro Turf in display cages (keep two precut on hand per cage) and newspaper for my breeders. Neither were on the poll, so figured I'd type it.

ANY HARDWARE STORE WILL HAVE IT. INDOOR/OUTDOOR CARPETING, IT MAY BE SOLD UNDER.

I hate astro turf.

Not only does it fray like mad after a while, which causes a danger to small snakes. But I find it to be filthy. I prefer to be able to give an almost sterile envoriment to my snakes and unless I wash the astro turf with bleach, it doesn't come as clean as I'd like. And when you do wash it with bleach (even 10%) it breaks down. I.E. fraying.

I am not saying its impossible to use it, I am just saying its FAR down the list of best substrates for me. But I DO see why it would be more appealing for display tans. And using it for only one or two tanks would be easier than 5+

I prefer paper towel, easy to clean. Comes VERY clean. Easy to spot problems....mites etc...doesn't fray, cheap etc.

Also when buying astro turf you need to be careful to get UNTREATED astro turf.

Some astro turf is treated to make it last longer outside etc. I haven't heard if this causes a problem for snakes or not, but my snakes aren't sitting on weather treated anything all day.

Again just MHO.

I'm currently using paper towels with lots of fake leaves to give him space to burrow. I used to use moss, but found it started to leave green spots on his underside when wet.

Newspaper...very inexpensive, available everywhere, easy to use, biodegradable, virtually no chance of being swallowed...
