BLACK WIDOW

As much as I love Snakes, I can't stand Bugs, Spiders and Scorpions.

My wife was weeding the flowers in the back yard yesterday and ran up
on this thing and it scared the BE-JESUS out of here. As much as they make
my skin crawl, I had to get some pictures of it before I . . . . . Well, it's not
there any more.

Sorry to the moderators . . . . I put this in the wrong forum.
Meant to put it in the Field Observations Forum

I hope you did something with that egg sack, too!

We have black and brown widows (yes, there are such things as brown widows :), here. I don't stick around (nor do they) long enough to take photos of them! They are pretty, though--in that terrifying arachnophobic kinda way :).

Actually, since it isn't a reptile, the General Chit Chat forum is probably the more appropriate place.

Awesome photos of a nasty, yet beautiful spider! We had at least a dozen of these ladies on the outside walls of the animal hospital years ago when we had the feed store attached in the back. I didn't have fun removing them, and I REALLY didn't like the one under the bench in one of the exam rooms. It's been years since I've seen any, so I must have done a decent job in removing them and their egg sacs.

Well made feel guilty for feeding black widow to the Writing Spider....she appearently loves it!

Both have been properly disposed of !
I can handle Snakes, Rats / Mice etc. . .but bugs and Spiders give me a
serious case of paranoia. Every time I see one, or have one crawl on me,
I'm constantly feeling them on my skin. I literally lose sleep after having
encountered spiders or roaches. . . . Can't Stand Them Thangs !!

A Black Widow spider is classified in the genus Latrodectus and in the family Therididae. All together there are around six different species of Black Widows and all of them are venomous.

A Black Widow spider is also referred to as the “hourglass” or “shoe button” spider. The Black Widow is a shy and a nocturnal spider. All species of Black Widows are found in warm climates of the north and south, which are approximately 45 degrees north or south of the equator. The Black Widow spider can also be found in four of the American southwest deserts as well.

My son asked me once, why do we get so mad when people kill snakes, even venomous snakes, for no reason but then kill spiders for no reason. It made me stop and think. I've killed lots of black widows for no reason, but I don't anymore. I won't let them stay in my house or garage but outside I think they are fine.

yuck, i had one of those in my house that laid an egg-sack...

but don't worry, she was in a jar! as soon as she laid the sack i gave it away to a Arachno Lover, lol.

the egg sack went on to hatch, too, and i think he still has the spiderlings! did you know that the babies are just as venomous as the adult when they very first hatch?

I was bitten by a black widow in '04 while field herping. Those little suckers pack a serious punch and the doctor only prescribed antibiotics as treatment. Took a week to over come the primary affects such as muscle spasms, sweats, fever, etc. Then it took six months for my skin around the bite to completely regain color. The lesson here is to wear gloves or use a hook when lifting flip items in the field and use only your finger tips.

Gah! I absolutley hate spiders! My friend, that likes spiders, and I had a long convoration.....more like a debate. All that was being said was "But...WHY...do you like snakes????" and I said "WHY....Do you like spiders???" And I feel the same way that you do, Spurticus, I see a spider (or any bug) and I fell them all over me and under my chair and in my room and all that bad stuff. But I guess every person has their own 'likes' and 'dislikes' ...

I'll join the spider hating club! I know they eat bugs & all, but EEEWWW!

There's a petstore that has a goliath bird eating tarantua for sale, & I tell you, I am pretty sure I stopped breathing for bit when I saw it.

I do appologize to those that think it's wrong to kill a Black Widow, A
Roach, or a scorpion etc. . . . . but if I see one, or (as today) I know
one has set up residence in an area where me, My wife or my grand
children will be. Or if it invades my domain (aka inside the house), then
it dies.

Hmm. Spiders in general don't bother me. Except those big golden orb spiders, if I'm mowing and drive through one and then there's a 3" spider on me, somewhere. Or if a giant wolf spider disappears into my recliner. Or if I'm driving when it's dark and I see a spider dangling right in front of me, in the truck.

But I get black widows in the mailbox and once in a while in the house. I ignore them. Move the ones in the house outside.

I had a little green spider in the truck with me today, but she just sat on the window frame. I took her out when I got home.

I think, outside, I generally like spiders.

Great Photos! I LOVE BlackWidows! They are my favorite! They scare the @#!% out of me yet I will stop & stare & even take a photo if I find one, which in Cali we have plenty all yr around. I also take time out to show my kids & teach them not to bother these guys & if they see one come get me....so I can take a photo & stare...LOL They're webs are so strong & one of a kind. I can tell by the web if its a BW or not. Pretty cool..

There's no point to be scared of any kind of spider, it's always around for reason.
I once, own a tarantula but sadly passed away few months ago because he might've reach his maximum life span, but I respect any kind of spider.
If I see one in my house, I catch it and release back in wild.
Since I was just a kid, I used to catch 2 big wolf spider and a royal jumping spider,
and combine them all together more like spider-fight....
Guess who won...noone, royal jumping just survived for like 5 second and passed away.

I accidently brought home some when i returned from the army(Ft.bliss el paso)
back in the early 90's.My parents still to this day find a couple in the basement
of their home every year.
Hardy little buggers.
