I wanted to test the waters and see how everyone felt about a Christmas photo contest?

Maybe have submissions starting earlier (November 14th?) so we can get more entries?

Also, if anyone would like to donate prizes, please also feel free to PM me about that as well.

I'LL PARTICIPATE!!! I've got all sorts of fun Christmas-y stuff I can use! Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to donate anything....

I really think we need to change the format of these contests so more people participate/ know about them. I would be more interested if the submissions are posted and displayed on a thread as received (as I had suggested in the Halloween photo contest thread). I really have more faith in the members here than to think there would be a lot of favoritism or stealing ideas or anything. I think the idea of sending the submissions to somebody and having to keep bumping a thread to make people aware there's a contest, led to poor participation for the last contest. I was dissapointed how few people entered!
That's just my 2 cents not trying to attack you or anything just what I feel after seeing how the last contest went.

Sadly, you can't rely on favoritism or idea stealing not happening. It has happened before. I actually had a member tell me they wouldn't have participated at all if everything had been made public before voting. Can't please everyone, so decisions had to be made based on what's happen in the past and try to do what was best for all of the members.

Appreciate the input. :)

Well, I'd like to know what other people besides Stef think about my idea before it gets shot down completely. With the amount of members we have, only nine entries to choose from for the general category seemed a bit pathetic to me. I think the other categories had even fewer entries.

You didn't enter. :shrugs:

Their were 3,887 views on the initial contest thread and then another 511 views on the actual rules thread. I can't say lack of views of the TWO threads had anything to do with it. :shrugs:

I would have entered the halloween one, but unfortunately started getting ready to move. Between school, work (moving office there as well, resulting in 60 hour weeks) and getting ready to move home (which includes 3 degus, 2 rabbits, 4 snakes) I just wasn't able to. I'm hoping I'll be able to participate in the Xmas contest, just depends on how soon the entry cut-off is. Near the end of November/Beginning of December is better for me.

Personally, I prefer the contests to be anonymous. I think it makes a more level playing field for everyone involved. Vote for the photo - not the person. I know people can still tell their friends and such which is their photo, but in general, I still believe in the long run it is more honest if it is anonymous.

I'd participate again :) I come here often, just don't post very much..being as I guess I'm just a single snake "pet" owner. I saw the Halloween photo contest post by a fluke. It was a lot of fun :)

I didn't want to enter because I had donated a prize. I'm not that good at photoshop and don't have other reptiles than corns for the other category, so entering a submission in the corn snake category to win my own prize seemed pointless ;)
I do appreciate the people who entered. I wasn't trying to knock the Halloween contest, just making a suggestion. But I have seen a couple of other forums, with way fewer members, have contests that have as many or even more entries. I think we here at CS can do better.
I do think it's possible to post entries as received and still have them be anonymous. However this would require a little extra effort from the person receiving the submissions to post them on a thread as received. As in post the pics in a thread with names withheld. This way the contest would stay updated and on the new posts page with more frequency than it did last time.
Or if anybody else has suggestions to make these contests work better, let's hear them?

I'm not that good at photoshop

I hope you don't let that dissuade you from entering in that category in the future. It's meant to be FUN and I don't think anyone expected any professional entries. :) Just plenty of creativity!

I think we here at CS can do better.

I agree. I forget when we started excepting entries, but maybe it was too short of a time span? Like I said, their were plenty of views on the thread, plenty of interest, just not many entries.

The reason why it wouldn't bump up to the new posts page when posting submissions is because I would want all of the images contained on one post (the initial post) so that it remains organized, all in one place. Editing a post doesn't bump up a thread.

The other thing is that you run the risk of people giving up and not submitting entries because they think they can't compete with some of the better photographers...Effectively cutting down submissions that way.

See what I mean by it being a lose/lose situation?
We really can't make everyone happy.

as fun as contests may be I have two issues with the halloween one:

1- I didn't know there was a Halloween contest. This forum is HUGE and my attention span small. I dunno where the original post was, but i saw NO post about the halloween contest...

2- i HATE pinned topics that don't have useful information. Even at my 1280x720 resolution I have a long ways to scroll to get past these polls just to get to the more resent information/posts... perhaps a different, temporary forum for poll voting might be in order. Better to have a SINGLE post directing traffic than 40....

I would love to particapate. The reason I didn't for Halloween is cause I don't have a camera but by Christmas I should have one or I'll steal one of my friends' cameras. I also think November 14th - December 19th is plenty of time.

Ok... I know if I was participating and the pics were posted before the competition was finished, I might accidently use other peoples ideas, so I don't think the pics should posted until everyones are collected... I liked the way it was done last time, so maybe there will be a better turn out since people know this far in advance.

I would LOVE to participate! I feel really left out because I was so psyched about entering the Halloween one, but then got too busy to put anything together. A Christmas one would be fantastic!! *starts planning*
