Considering a Blood Python.

I have to just say Robbie is very smart & knowledgeable of all the snakes in his care. He just doesn't take on anything without fully knowing what he is getting into.
And his big Burm only makes appearances outside his enclosure when his partner Tony is their to help & supervise the whole time.

Thankfully you and the gang were there to save me when I was handling Robbie's baby burm. Things were dicey there for a few minutes! ;)

To tell you the truth Dean I was more worried what that Florida King was trying to do to you. How is it doing? Still feisty towards you. :)

Yeah, that Brooksi did a number on me. :grin01: He's doing great-- eating, pooping, etc.. He's still feisty, but I don't think he's actually connected a bite since I got him home, just a lot of lunging. But he certainly is no exception to the musky-as-heck king stereotype. I let a neighbor kid name him, but to be honest, I can't remember the silly name he picked ("Fangs," or something like that.) I just call him "Eff-Ell."

I even have Dave on facebook and he looks about as big as robbie, And you own a Burm robbie, So I dont see how you can handle a burm if that's the case...

Probably because I have another ADULT around to handle him when he gets larger. I don't even take out any of my boas without a second person present, just in case. I do realize that when my burm does get big enough, I'll need at least 3 people around to handle him with.

Yes, I did my research, and quite a good bit of it. When I say a good bit, we're talking about over 2 YEARS worth, not a few months. I fully knew the responsibility of taking on an animal of the size he's going to get. I also own my house. When I move again in 3 years to move on to the state university, I'm going to be buying a new(er) home. And yes, I'm getting ready to start saving money now for the down payment on that home.

:roflmao: I love you, Dean.

Thanks, Tim. But Shesmu still isn't all that big yet! The boas are the only ones that might require Tony's assistance at the moment.

Just in case some of you have not readthe entire thread I have decided against a blood. Snakewhiperamakes a good point though. I am a capable human, I can do things and make choices my self. If I want a snake I should be given advice not be flamed. I take care of a King Rat snake well 100% of the time. Anyway I am going to go for a Ultra and a granite corn at the show I think.

David do remember a lot of the ill advise is because you are still a kid and not because of lack of research. In the next ten years a lot will change for you and people just want to make sure you understand not to get too deep in now. By the time you are more settled you will have better decision making skills, more reptile keeping experience, and a lot more money to spend;)

Robbie,
When my EX left, I got stuck with the Burm (it was her snake but its mine now.). To me its not a problem but you are correct, always have a second person in the room with you at all times.

The first time I fed her, she fell out of the cage with the rabbit in her mouth and coiled around it. My buddy almost pooped his pants. I was calm and since she was busy, I grabbed her and placed her back into the cage and closed it up. I told him to be ready with the bottle of Rum near the cage, just in case.

LOL he asked if it was for him..

But here is my Ex with my Burm, these were taken a few years ago. the snake is a bit larger now.

I looked at teh cash flow and I could get a nice ultra and a granite with the price of one blood

David, please don't mistake my cautioning you about things that (truly) I know and you do not as "flaming" you. I am merely trying to point out to you that the future is NOT fixed, and planning for it is difficult, if not impossible, especially at your age, and with your future!

"Difficult to see. Always in motion is the future." -Yoda

Glad you decided against it. I got whacked by one on the thigh one time and through jeans I was bleeding like a banchy! Those bad boys hit hard and fast and I know that you can take all the precautions and handle it as much as you want, but its still a wild animal and still has instincts that we can barely understand. I'm 6' and fairly well built and I'm not sure I would want to deal with a blood all the time.

Awesome job researching before purchasing though. Some serious kudos there for making an educated decision!

Thanks, and Lauren please don't worry. When the college bridge comes I will cross it then. Who even knows if we willl be here on earth then. Anyway, I am starting reasearch on the ultra gene and also looking into just different blood red CORN mrophs

The guy in the shorts gets me everytime! Lol

But Robbie I got scorned for my king rat after 3 years of reasearch!

But you also have to look at the age difference.
If you were doing research for 3 years, that means you started when you were 12. Before you were even taught how to do a proper research paper. I didn't get my burm until my 20th birthday (as a present). Having been through science courses and advanced and AP English courses, I had already written several research papers, and learned how to recognize good and bad sources, and had also learned not to take any one source to be the "ultimate". A combination of many sources is required for a good understanding of any subject.

My sources were breeders, zoo keepers, owners, books. Are those bad sources? I went to zoos that have these animals and asked the keepers in the reptile house and got info on them. And a King rat is nothing like a burm. Anyway I actually found a great deal on a granite and I may take it.

Depending on some of the zoos and breeders, they can be terrible sources. I've seen a breeder keep gravid female ball pythons in 6qt sterilite tubs. Would you trust him with info on BP's?

No I would not trust those sources. But the books by RD Bartlett were they bad. Bartlett is the BEST herp writter out there
