Debate forum

Nanci this is the box rule mentality of “do what I say or else” again.

I’m sure I going to get a PM warning me to ‘watch my step’ any minute know.

I am not knocking anyone or this forum but am suggesting a thread were the members are under the rules but have a little more freedom.

Freedom to do what?

(I'm sorry that, at the time, we couldn't come to an acceptable resolution for whatever that initial conflict was- which I remember happening, but don't remember the details of it right now without refreshing my memory. I just remember thinking "Who the heck is this new guy? Oh, now that I have gotten to know him, and at least one person I respect has vouched for him, I appreciate him being here.")

This thread is not going to be locked.

I'm not against it, per se; I just don't see a reason for one.

No idea what you are trying to say. Anyway so you are against a debate thread before you lock this one?

i think she is saying you will not getting a PM to "watch your step" because you haven't done anything even remotely out of line.

and i think that is what most of us are saying...you already have the freedom to express you opinions anywhere on this forum, as long as you are not attacking other members (or talking about illegal things i suppose)

I'm saying, I don't know what you think you have written here, in this thread, that would cause you to think you might get a warning for stating it.
Requesting the members for there opinion on a controversial thread will introduce a debate in itself.

In my humble opinion most members of this forum will avoid expressing their personal opinion so as to avoid controversy.

You're kidding, right?
I am an absolute loudmouth, and have no trouble expressing my personal opinion on this forum!! Ask anyone!

I think that this thread in itself has proven that many of us are willing to express our opinions...you, me, Nanci, Beth, Josh, Betsy, etc... anyone who has participated in this thread.

Just go look up any of the numerous political discussions that have been started in the general chit chat...they tend to get many posts, by many people, of many different viewpoints. They only time I can recall them being closed is when people start getting out of line by name calling/personal attacks.

I've seen so many other forums (not cs.com) where the moderators will close a thread simply because they don't agree with it, or don't like it, etc.... But this forum is not like that.

I am not totally sure of what it is that you want to do differently...

As others have said, we have had LOTS of debates on almost every subject here - politics, religion, whether to cohab or feed live, lol! I have never felt that I can't come right out and say what I feel, even in a passionate, but NOT insulting, way. I don't remember a thread ever being locked because it was PASSIONATE or heated, or off topic. I do remember some being locked because some people became abusive and insulting.

If you feel somebody has been insulting or abusive towards you, you should report it. Mods do not read EVERY thread, but they will check it out if it is reported. Of course, every person may see abuse slightly different than the next person. But they have seemed pretty fair to me - IF they happen to read the post in question. Don't forget - you may be reading the post from an emotional viewpoint because of your involvement in the discussion, while the mod may only be an uninvolved 3rd party, so may not be able to read into a post what you feel you are seeing.

It seems really difficult for some people to become passionate about their position WITHOUT becoming hostile and insulting to those with the opposite view. Although I do understand why some viewpoints and statements can lead to anger ( I have felt that way myself, in some threads, too), I DON'T understand why an adult would want to EXPRESS that anger in a childish way. It never accomplishes your goal of trying to get your viewpoint understood, and to persuade others of the validity of your side of the issue. But such is life, and human nature.

Plus, as mentioned before, we have at least one member forum for discussions not suitable for children. So the only things I can think of that we CAN'T do here is to insult people or become really hostile and inflammatory. I am not sure if you are asking for a forum where we CAN be hostile and insulting, or if there is something else that I am missing in your request?

Didn't think so!!! :)

Look starsevol I asked you for your opinion but all you could do was brag about being opinionated with nothing to say. You then want me to kiss your royal behind because you think I need your input or want to play little word games. You certainly don`t know me so go back to whatever you were doing.

This thread has no doubt been a waste of me time. Bye (Do not subscribe)

Huh? Beth really is opinionated but I think she was trying to be humorous with you & joke around.

Well, I guess that answers my question as to what is desired that is not allowed now, lol!

Personally, I would not consider that remark to be exactly abusive, but certainly insulting (although I am not a mod, so I don't officially make that decision). It would probably lead to further inflammatory remarks, and if intensified, could eventually lead to the thread being locked. It is what I meant when I said that insulting posts don't help shore up your side of the debate. I didn't get an answer to what else you wanted, but if you meant the ability to insult other members, then I would respectfully disagree with you. I don't think the forum would be enhanced by that ability.

So what if most want to avoid controversy? It seems to me you're trying to stir some up just for the sake of stirring some up. And besides, everyone who's posted in this thread has given their opinion.

As others have said, what is it specifically you want to do but can't do now? Whatever it is, it probably isn't civil or mature. Because you can pretty much post and say whatever you want within reason.

Why not introduce a (private) forum or thread where the members can Debate issues that are bothering them.
A little freedom to respectfully and openly vent or express opinions without “management” controlling the direction and or conclusion?
:grabbit:

Can you explain your statement here a little deeper? That might help clear things up.
