I've seen them on a few websites. They are acrylic reptile cages that fit right into the fireplace cove. I'm wondering if anyone here has one? Id like to have my fireplace taken apart and have a vivarium put in there. The inside of my fireplace has ventilation and a UL outlet for a heat mat.

Has anyone done this?

How funny. I've thought about this several times. Living in San Diego our fireplace gets very little use. Me and DuneDiva have talked about blocking it off so we could put a nice large viv in front of it. I like this idea MUCH better.

I never use mine. My neighbor is a contractor, and Ive asked he come and shut mine down. There is also a piece in there that the logs sit on and whatnot that has to be drilled out....If I have enough space, I want to do it.

Theres even an electrical outlet in there.
 
This might be common sense, I'm not sure, but since I'm a chimney sweeps daughter, I would advise that you make sure the chimney is sealed off well so you don't get any cold air drafts coming down on the snakes.

It looks awesome in that picture, but that might be because it's a display picture. I think the idea's great, but you would need to keep in mind the size and what could reasonably fit in there for its whole life. I suppose it depends on the size of your fireplace. Also, if you're a home owner or not. I think I'd rather go with a nicely designed combination of a few display cases, perhaps even with a "nook" for them to look like they're built into the wall. Fireplace seems a little unrealistic in the long run though.
Still, I wish I had the skills to DIY that!
 
This is my fireplace, this is from last year so my living room theme is the same but the furniture is different but you get the idea...my living room is african themed...so I thought the fireplace viv depending on how it was decorated would look nice...

You know I have two fireplaces and they are definitely big enough for a decent sized snake to live comfortably....two is a little much anyway, have to talk to the husband now!
 
Your home is so beautiful, Justine. And all the colors they make that cage in would match. I want to say there's a slot underneath it that's a space for a UTH. I have a lizard in mine, so I'm not using a UTH. Although I'm using a heat panel (which is pretty much the same!) inside. I also have a really cool LED light velcroed up to the ceiling of it. You can't see it, (which is the idea!) but it's a very nice light! (The light slots on the top are toward the front, and the back was deep in shadows until I put that in). It's easy to run cords out the back. I'll take a look sometime and see how secure I think the cord slot would be for an adult snake. One thing I'm a little disappointed in is the plastic, which is molded, seems slightly warped. It isn't as straight and level as I wish it was. Like the front is very slightly bowed in. It doesn't really matter, but it still bugs me a little for how much it cost...

What size did you end up getting? The 36 is like 299$ :eek1:

Under my fireplace is the UL outlet, so I was thinking the cage would slide in perfectly into the fireplace square, but Id still have about 4 inches underneath, Id have to sit the cage on something, whether it be wood or whatever because the pilot switches and gas line are under there. If I had it sit on a few pieces of wood, Id have room to run the UTH wires underneath it because the cage would be elevated off the floor.

How are the sliding doors? Are they hatchling proof? Usually the front sliding glass isnt.
 
By the way Nanci, I dont know if youre looking for more of them but every once in a while, someone on ebay sells them cheaper then they want....
 
Mine is 48 x 18 x 24. I'd never trust a hatchling with sliding glass doors. And the cord pass-through would not be safe for a snake, I don't think, unless you put that foam sealer or something else on it. But it can be closed completely. It works like the top of a reptile vitamin or turtle food shaker, where there's a half moon-shaped opening with a solid disc that rotates over it to open and close it as much as you want. $389 plus $49 shipping. Plus the $12 lock!! I had great customer service when I couldn't get the lock to work. (User error).

Does that mean as long as I dont use something INSIDE the viv, I dont need to use the hole to run the cord to the outside?
