This is kind of a thread hijack but not really. At least in my life it's never been safe. There were pervs in my neighborhood. And in those days parents & police didn't believe kids. There were big dogs (NOT bully breeds) running loose who were inclinded to bite. There were big kids who would beat up smaller children.
When I was a kid most of the big dogs that bit kids were GSDs or GSD-lookalikes. And the only bad bite I ever had was from a spaniel! Seems to me there needs to be stricter attention paid to ALL big powerful dog breeds who could maul kids, not just bully breeds, and really IMPACTFUL punishments for owners of said dogs who allow them to run loose. A dog who is in his own yard, or his own house, is much less dangerous than one who is out unsupervised & uncontrolled. That's just IMHO, though.

I use to volunteer at the SPCA, for over 4 years. We saw more pit bulls than other dog, and were often the sweetest. I remember one that was suspected of being a "bait" dog for fights, he was all tore up, but my god, that dog was so nice and just happy to be alive. I took him to a park and he was so confused by the sand, once he figured it out he LOVE it (which meant I had to remove him from it, he had never been on a leash before and when he got excited, managing him was difficult). Just one of the fonder memories those dogs have given me.
The dogs in the article have obviously shown aggression before, and the worthless scum who owned them chose to do nothing. His owners need to be locked up - it's sad the dogs need to be destroyed but it's probably for the best in this case. As for banning all pit bulls, that's sad too. I hope it doesn't happen, or idiots will move on to bigger dogs like the cane corso or presa canario.

You are right on both points. I am NOT a pit or bully breed owner. I have owned an arctic, a Sammy, who was plenty big enough she could have really hurt someone, and had the bite pressure to break a cow femur (we almost could not give her bones, even raw, because she cracked them so fast). I was a teenager then. Tika was NEVER unsupervised where she could get at anyone. She was an escape artist, so we could not even let her loose in our fully fenced yard, because she would go over the fence or tunnel under it! She never bit anyone but me (and these were minor warning nips as a puppy for which she was disciplined properly and after maturity she never even nipped me, it was while she was in puppy training) but I was aware that if she could break a cow femur bone she could KILL someone.
I have met a number of bully breed dogs over the years, also Rotties & Dobies. All have "bad reps" as dangerous dogs. All are more than powerful enough to do that kind of damage. I have to say, I am more concerned about the possibility of human aggression with Rotties & Dobies, and that a lot. The bully breed dogs I have met posed only ONE danger -- that they will lick you to death loving on you! Admittedly the first pittie I met sent me head over heels (the printable version) because I said it was OK if the dog jumped. After all, it was maybe 40 lbs of dog (a small pibble). I thought it was OK until I wound up with 40 lbs of dog standing on me licking my glasses off my face while wiggling the whole dog!
So I love bully breeds and for the right owner I think they are fantastic, just like I realize that arctics have their issues and are not for every owner.
That said, dogs that have shown human aggression to the point of biting can't be tolerated, sooner or later someone will get hurt. But this should apply to all big dogs, mixed breed, pibble, or whathaveyou. And the owners need to be severely punished if they knew they had a dog that had showed human aggression. But banning bully breeds will just cause the creepos to go back to GSDs and breeding them for human aggression too. And seriously, breeds of dog that were bred for protection against other humans may be more dangerous than bullies, who were originally developed for DOG AGGRESSION + LOW HUMAN AGGRESSION (pit fighting dog owners used to wade in and separate their dogs manually, and in Shakespearean England, owners of pit dogs used to keep them in the house with the family so they culled any human aggressive dogs). Now imagine what happens when creepos are breeding dogs that weren't pre-culled that way!
Bottom line is human responsibility, whether you own a bully breed or a reticulated python.

Well, the ones I've met will whap you to pieces with the tail while sliming you to death with the tongue! It's quite the experience, all that powerful dog putting all of his or her attention to telling you PET ME! LOVE ME BECAUSE I LOVE YOU! even though you met the dog 30 seconds earlier. :bird:

Bully breed, shmully breed. My brother has a 13 pound Dachshund mix, and that tongue is literally the most deadly force to be reckoned with. Give him any attention, and that slimy tongue is just waiting to choke you... It's nasty! If the tongue won't kill you, then the breath will... good lord, if they could bottle that up and put it into a grenade, we'd save a lot of money trying to stop weapons of mass destruction, lol!

Aint that the truth! Between one dog I know who has such bad gas that I think Saddam Hussein's gas factories were hidden in that dog's intestines and the dog-breath-of-death most of them have, we don't need WMD. And yet we love them anyway.

Oh, don't get me started on the gas. He's like a faulty Prius... doesn't take much fuel, but the emissions are devastating to all life forms.

My mom's old dog, a Flat Coat/Border collie mix, had sentient gas. It would chase you through the house, and explore one room at a time before flowing to the next. We always assumed it was a portal to hell, and we joked about donating her to the military to be used as a biological weapon.

And on the topic of gas - holy cow - when our rottie lets one go I actually have to get up and check to make sure no one took a dump in the house! To top if off, now I have a cat that has farts that rival the dog! I never thought it was possible....until now! Joe "affectionately" calls him Stinky!

That is my German shepherd X Great Pyrenees mix to a T! Everyone who walks in the door MUST be there to be HER personal petting unit. Someone else is getting pet? That will NOT do! She will shove the other cat/dog out of the way and get this: >l< close to you! Personal space is NOT in her vocabulary. It's SO funny seeing people nervous of her! We had a family friends kid over that kept sitting on her, so she just kept sitting down and watching the kid slide off onto the floor, of course the 4 year old thought this was AWESOME! and we finally had to convince him that he would "Break" our 120 pount push over. ><
