Dyna-grow questions...

Gig 'Em Ags!! Whoop!!
Howdy! I'm thinking about using live plants just because I love the way they look and I'm willing to put in the extra effort to keep the cage clean and have it looking awesome to display my little beauties. My question is whether or not this Dyna-grow stuff is safe for the snakes or not. It is advertised as being safe when for animals as well as the plants, but I'm not about to spray something on my snakes without knowing more about it first. Do any of ya'll use real plants in your cages, and if so what type of non-toxic/non-harmful fertilizer do you use?

I would certianly NOT use any sort of chemical fertilizer in my snake's enclosure! I'd imagine there would be all sorts of possible hazards....toxicity, chemical burns...etc. I sai DEFINITELY NOT.

I, too, wouldn't feel comfortable using fertilizers. In fact, I would just avoid live plants.

What about using silk ones? The ones they make today look pretty darned real, and they're way easy to clean if they get soiled. I have a couple in my display viv, and I think they look great!

Hey Matt how ya been? The Ghost you sold me is just gorgeous and gettin big. I'm hoping she'll be ready to breed not this year but probably the year after.

The dyna-grow is what they use in dart frog enclosures that almost have to have live plants because of the humidity levels and stuff, I'm just not totally sure if it's the best brand or not. I have silk plants right now, but I love the way real plants look, and not matter how nice silk plants look they still don't have that great healthy shine to them. Plus, it gives me more to do and it'll help keep up the humidity level in my Viper Boa cages. I also just want to try and step it up just one more notch, and really give myself a challenge.

I use fake plants I buy at wal-mart and my snakes seem to love it!..Plus it really does give a natural feel to their viv.

This is just my opinion..but like mentioned above..fake plants are also easier to clean when you need to clean out the viv...snakes don't mind if the plants are real or not..as long as they get the basic care they need and have a clean home and plenty of places to hide..I think they would be one happy snake :0)

OK, I don't think anybody is really trying to answer my question here...I know that silk plants work fine and I have them in my vivs right now and they look fine. But, I have always thought that real plants look much better than fakes. I know that fakes are easy to clean I clean all 8 or 9 of mine every time I clean my cages, and in between if they get crapped on. My actual question isn't should I use fake or real, it is pertaining to Dyna-grow and if anybody has any experience or knowledge concerning it.

I don't have any concrete answers, but I think that amphibians would be much more sensitive to chemicals in their environment than any snake would. If it can be used safely in dart frog enclosures, then I wouldn't expect a problem using it in a snake viv. :shrugs: I highly doubt that you're going to get a definite answer on this one...

Same thing I was thinking. I never heard of the stuff before. But frogs are really sensitive to all kinds of chemicals. If you are sure it is safe for dart frogs, then it would be hard to believe it could hurt a snake. I suppose there could be some problem I haven't thought of, but I don't know what it could be. Try a small amount and see what happens, or if there is any reaction from the snake. But check the label for ingredients, just in case something looks suspicious.

I think it is great to use live plants, since you are aware of the hassles and ready to deal with them. I love using live plants on my Amazon tree boas outside, and plan to set up some corns outside with live plants too. I would never use live plants indoors - too much work, and they go downhill or die too easily inside. But if you can keep them going, experiment away and let us know the results.

Good luck!

Ditto what Dean and Kathy said. If you are positive it's ok in frog enclosures it should be fine with snakes. Frogs are very environmentally sensitive.

Thanks guys! That's what I figured I just wanted to see here some input from other people too. Kathy, I thought I remember you having a few red phase ATBs. Are you planning on breeding them by any chance :D Thats my ultimate goal is to get a breeding colony of Red and Orange phase ATBs. I love displaying snakes (obviously, thats the whole point of the live plants :grin01: ) and to me those are some of the ultimate display snakes if you can calm them down. I love em!!! :crazy02:

I've been good, you? I'm glad that she's doing well for you. You will have to get some updated pics posted! Do you already have a mate picked out for her?

Well if it's safe for frogs, and you're willing to put forth the effort to maintain the plants and still maintain an environment conducive to keeping corns, then by all means go for it! If you do, you'll have to post up some pics and updates to let us know how it's going.

Everythings goin pretty good. I have an internship for the summer so I don't have quite as much time to go field herping as I'd like, but I'm in Iowa for the summer so there aren't a ton of herps up here anyways lol. But tonight I caught a little garter snake and it was gusting at 45mph today so that was a nice little surprise. I have a pretty Hypo male picked out for her and I'm not sure on his hets so I'm hoping he might have some anery or amel in him. I'll get some updates posted as soon as I can get outside and take some good pics of both of them.

So funny thing. I was sitting here trying to plan out how I was going to use real plants (setting them up, what ones, how to do the lighting, etc.) and I realized that next year I need to be a litttle less conspicuous because my apt. complex changed the rules on pets and we can have dogs or cats but nothing in tanks or cages (explain that one to me :shrugs: ). So I thought, "Hey why not use the money to build a nice rack system that will house 8-12 snakes and start a few more breeding projects. So now I've spent most of my work day researching rack systems and heating set ups (not to mention used the AutoCAD on my computer -- thank you work :) ) and designed a new system. Thanks for the help with the plants though. I'm keeping my Visionariums so hopefully one day I can have the gorgeous GTP or ATB display I've always dreamed of having :D I'll post pictures of the rack when I get it built but it might now be for a while because next week I'm goin to Hawaii
