England vs. USA

Speaking of popularity...Can someone find the viewer statics of the Super Bowl compared to whatever soccer's comparable game would be?

Some Site from Google said:
But isn’t the Super Bowl the most watched sporting event in the world? That is a complete fallacy. The World Cup Final draws a television audience exceeding one billion people, or a little under one-sixth of the world’s population. In comparison, the Super Bowl is watched by a paltry viewing audience of around 100 million. Even considering that these figures were taken from the reputable answerbag.com and probably have a standard deviation of about 500 trillion, I would still say that we can absolutely reject the null hypothesis that American football is more popular than soccer.

Taken from this site... wether the numbers are right or wrong, I'm pretty sure that answered your question... The world Cup is watched by more people than the Super Bowl.

Geez, folks...I feel a bit too new here to get into a debate between countries, but good lord....fighting over sports popularity? Everyone has their preferences. SnakeDave was my very first buddy on this forum, and if you've read any of his posts, you'll find him to be one of the most courteous people you'll encounter. It was some good natured ribbing. *breathe*

Thank you Lori, I appreciate that. :)

Hey, this thread was never meant to be a verbal battle between countries, LOL.

Thanks starsevol, you Americans aren't bad either. :grin01:

I've never watched Torchwood and I don't like Dr.Who, figures!

I was referring to stats in the US, not worldwide. Football is really a US sport from my understanding, so worldwide stats wouldn't really work in the equation obviously.

Well, you said this:

"Speaking of popularity...Can someone find the viewer statics of the Super Bowl compared to whatever soccer's comparable game would be?"

I quoted what you asked, you didn't say where. I thought it was better considering you were arguing for AF, and I was arguing for football, to post worldwide views of the sports. The US isn't the centre of the World, you know.

Dave, that's quite a gauntlet you're throwing down there.
In any case, how is a p-ing up the wall contest every going to end civilly?
Different countries like different sports in different proportions. No need to argue over how the popularity is measured.

Well considering the fact that the Super Bowl is comprised of two teams from the US, and the World Cup is comprised of teams from all over the world....what a shocker to see what has a bigger audience.

I said the World Cup final, which also consists of two teams. And at the last World Cup final, it was Italy vs. France, with total combined populations that are far smaller than the US's population.

I'm not arguing anything. I was stating that soccer is not as popular in the US as football is. I do apologize for not clarifying though. It's just common sense to me to not compare something that is mostly US only (super bowl) to something that is world wide (world cup).

The US isn't the centre of the World, you know.

Wow, talk about a foot in mouth comment. Yikes! :bang:

Alright, sorry, I admit that was a little harsh... My apologies.

I think it's best that we just agree to disagree on what we like and leave it at that. When a thread about an international friendly with my attempt at ironic humour turns into this, then I think it's time we all just leave it.

Sorry once again, I like the US and it's people, and I respect you guys a lot.

All the best

David

Just for comparison's sake, with some actual numbers....

US Population: 304 Million
World Population: 6.67 Billion

Super Bowl attracted ~100 million, World Cup ~715 million.

But THIS "yank" does not WANT to be against the English!
I LOVE the english!

The english gave me "Torchwood" and "Dr Who" and accents that make my ears happy.

And let's not forget all the many faces of Rowan Atkinson (my fav is "Black Adder"), "The Young Ones" and "Red Dwarf", to name just a tiny few...

I love England and its citizens as well!

They gave us........the United States! :grin01:

Secondly, football cannot even be compared to hockey. In terms of skill, popularity and required fitness levels, football wipes the floor with hockey, along with most of your sports, and all with regards to popularity.

I just started reading this thread now and i really have to disagree with you dave. Football may be more popular, but i think it takes alot more skill to play hockey than you might think. i have never played football in my life (on a team that is) and i know for a fact that i could try out this year and be able to compete with people that have played much longer than i would have. However lets say i have never played hockey before in my life.. i would have to learn how to skate first of all, in both directions (backwards is tough to learn by the way!) and i would have to learn many different puck skills too! (shooting, passing, stick handling..) maybe its just me but i think it takes alot more skill to play hockey than football. Its a shame more people dont play in the us, i think the main reason is the cost to play. it cost me 1000$ last year to play. Sorry to just bring this out of no where but im very passionate about hockey because i was brought up around hockey.. (grandpa has been with the NHL for a longgg time!)

Every time I think of hockey, I think of brawls! I lived in New England for a number of years, so it was popular there, naturally. But what's up with the fighting that *seems to* regularly break out?

Most teams usually have an enforcer that takes care of all the fighting.. they are incharge of protecting the top players on the team. If another player gets in the top guys face the enforcer guy steps in and fights. kinda confusing.. but i do like the fighting!
