hey guys, well as most will know I got a new Viv for Damien early this year, last night I used it for Sabrina, now when the man come and collected Sabrina, I was really happy because he would give her a good home, I quickly jammed the heatbulb in the viv door, and ran downstairs, then on my way up, I smelt fire, ran upstairs, and my viv was on fire, room was pretty smokey! So first I got rid of the bulb, then put water on the fire, then opend all windows, I took damien in the other room for 5mins then put him back, there is enough fresh air coming through the house, I tried sandpapering the burn out, but its burnt right through the wood, no hole but burnt, my room is starting to smell again and ive taken my viv to bits fully washed it with disenfectant, but the smell won't go away, it's in the wood, what can i do? Damien is all set up in my old fishtank atm witch will do him fine, I just cant get rid of the smell of fire, every window upstairs has been open for hours the smell is still around.. and even after 2 full wash's the wood smells! I wanted to put Damien back in his Viv tonight so he can settle for a week, but i don't want to because it may cause him health problems, it's already giving me a bad throat, should i take damien out the room? I already removed all clothing bed sheets and curtons..

you could try to put another cot of polyurithen on it and see if that covers the smell....
Thanks for your advise, I think Damien will actually be okay in his tank untill he grows out of it, my parents say that they can't smell it on the Viv or in my room, but I can, so i'm going for a walk to get some fresh air,

George.

Sorry about the fire, thank goodness you caught it before it did more damage. Why can't you use fish tank as a viv? You may have to get a different lid, but that's a lot cheaper than an entire viv. susan

Yea, I think i'm going to, it's just the right size and I like it : )

the lid was already fitted with wire mesh, I did that a while ago, the only problem i have is that i smell fire in my room, and no-one else can, so i'm really worried about Damien..

You probabaly smell if because you know it was there. Just move him to the fish tank, and he'll be fine. :) I'm sorry about the fire though, that's very scarey.

You may have singed some nose hairs when putting out the fire. That would explain you smelling it when no one else can...

You've gotta admit that there's some irony in the fact that in the process of removing the dangerous snake (a threat to infants and teens alike) the house was almost burnt down. ;)

lol, yea, maybe it was a sign, :grin01: just messing :p

the smell just won't go, mum can smell it too, I'm worried that this may bother Damien, it's not a strong smell, infact it's very little, but it still could, and i don't want that...! any suggestions?

Ah, my fear of heat lamps, realized...George, you are so lucky. Damien will be fine in the old viv till you can get him a new one. I can't believe your mom isn't super freaking out. The smell of smoke isn't going to hurt Damien. Glad you're ok.

Thanks, trust me, Nanci, If i had stayed downstairs and returned to my bedroom in flames, I probably would have been very scared, although brave, because I would still go in for Damien, luckily I returned in time, thanks for asuring me the smell won't hurt him, it's giving me a bad throat so i was really worried about his little throat, that lamp won't be used again, well, maybe when i go into tortoise's next year :grin01: but i'll have some good thurmostat on it :grin01:

It was my fault anyways, I'm really glad it never spread, I would not be able to live with myself if the house burnt down because of me, we have built up alot since mum left dad, so everything means something : )

If you know somebody with power tools, maybe they can drill a hole through the burnt spot, or cut it out, and then patch it. Or maybe a power sander can sand down to where it is not burnt. It is really hard to get rid of smoky smells. I think it even gets on your walls and everything else. It will probably take a while before it is mostly gone.

whoa. Really glad you are okay. That's pretty scarey huh?

Well, I used to smoke and a jacket I had from 4 years ago, despite being washed and dry cleaned, still smells a bit like smoke--and that's just cigarettes. I lived with a wood burning stove as my only source of heat for a few winters and same thing. Blankets still have that fireplace smell years later despite being cleaned.

You might want to check out some fire department websites for smoke smell removal info. Perhaps there's treatments on the market for such odours. Also, I know that after house fires, there are companies who come in and treat the house, just for the smell, in rooms that didn't necessarily have "smoke" or fire in them.

Good luck and I'm really glad you are alright!

P.S. I melted my livingroom carpet last week by putting a heat lamp cover down on it... and the light had been off for a few minutes! Those things are friggen HOT!

I've read 5 posts and 2 of them are you getting strangled by one of your snakes and almost cremating the other one...

I'm sorry this is happening to you, but I'd be lying if I said I'm not interested to see your next post

"I went to go feed Damien a f/t pinkie today but when I went to thaw it I came back and it was gone. The baby took it as a pacifier and was sucking on it, mum was not to pleased with me, but the baby is ok so she wasn't that mad"

I'm jk with ya George, I'm glad you found a good home for your snake and didn't burn your home in the process

Yikes, glad everything is okay. This is why I, too, hate heat lamps. Finally I've gotten rid of all of mine. Well hopefully the burnt smell will disappear soon, and I'm sure your snake will be fine. :)

Uh-oh, I'm going to be keeping all my hatchlings in Maine with my dad and 2 year old sister. The snakes will be out of her reach, but I didn't even think of the 15 mice being thawed out every 5 days! jk, but now I don't have to learn it the hard way!!! :grin01: My sister gets into everything, no matter where you put it (cabinates with baby locks included).

lol, naa, I sorted the strangling thing, she was looking for protection and to feel secure, she has gone to a nice home, and Damien was pretty far away from my other viv so he would not have got burnt, I'm never really away from my room for more then like 20mins :p

Thanks everyone for your replys, the smoke smell has gone this morning, so everythings great, exept ive lost a good viv, but i'm not too fussed because Damiens okay in his old one : )

Thanks for your suggestions and advise : )
