First loss feeling sad

Well, tonight when I came home from work I checked on my snakes. Its feeding night and I always check them over before they are fed. No need to check over the creamsicle. He was clearly dead.

When I seen him lying upside down with the green spot half way down his body I knew the worst had happened. I am glad that I still had him in quarantine and no where near my other snakes. I kept his conditions tip top so I am thinking it might have been something else that caused his death, but I still can't keep from feeling like I have failed somehow. I wonder if this is a normal feeling.

I just had to vent. I am feeling pretty down...

I'm so sorry for your loss! And yes this is a normal feeling to have, but just remember that doesn't mean that you *have* failed somehow!
When a pet dies, it's easy to get lost in the *I should have* and *I could have* and so on. I guess it's part of the greeving process.
I'll be thinking of you.

Thanks very much! It certainly is a stinky feeling. I had been looking at another snake I wanted to buy for the past while. I think I am going to pass on that... Just keep taking care of my other guys.

That's miserable for you - I'm sorry.

Yes, the "kicking yourself" scenario is perfectly normal and part of the process of loss. I've even felt guilty at losing a snake when it's had vet treatment for weeks beforehand and I know it's had the best care possible.

I am very sorry for your loss, I know how it feels, just this past Monday I lost my Albino Okeetee, Asbit, she died in my hands! It was terrible. I hope you feel better soon.

I'm so sorry. I think the "did I do something wrong?" question is the mark of a good, caring keeper. Most of us ask that question, even if we've been doing everything that's best for the snakes. It always hurts to lose one.

Sorry for your loss, but its not your fault and it happens to any keeper of animals at some point. The only thing anyone can do is provide the best care possible, but its just not always enough and we can't exactly change these things. Good luck though and don't let this dicourage you:)

Thank you so much everyone for all of the kind words! I really appreciate it! I just can't keep thinking that the long quarantine was a good thing.

Here is a weird question; What do you guys do after a pet snake or lizard has passed? I do not feel comfortable disposing of the body in the garbage.

Soooo....What do you do with the body of a dead pet snake? Not sure if I want to make a new thread for this question...

For my last little guy I put him in his water bowl and wrapped it air tight with a towel and plastic wrap. I wanted to find a good place to bury him, but I haven't yet. It might sound strange and a bit morbid, but he's in an empty drawer all wrapped up. :-\

I tend to bury all my animals (except my cat which got cremated). If I am planting new plants in the yard I like to bury them in the hole with them (I have a bird buried with one of my bushes, hamsters under trees, etc...). If the ground is too hard I keep them in the freezer until I'm able to bury them. My bird lived in the freezer for 5 months, and even made the move from apartment to house before the ground was finally soft enough to bury. when I didn't own my own house I buried all my animals at my mothers house. Their is a little pet graveyard around her shed.

I think that since I rent he will be going to my parents house. They have a beautiful back yard and as long as Dad doesn't tell mom I think it will be alright. And we have had to wait to bury animals too. Long time ago our family cat passed away and it was dead of winter in northern Canada. We had to wait until spring to take an axe to the ground. Tigger stayed in the shed in her box until we could give her a proper burial. Thank you again!
