Funny call

Got a call from an older woman that breeds small animals. When I arrived there she was rather excited about a snake. 4ft gray rat snake had eat a jumbo and tried to exit the drain that it had originally used to enter.

She said she didn't want to kill it, but didn't want it around her barn either. I let it go behind the house.

I think you missed the questions Nanci asked.

She said ""Are you an exterminator? Why do you take calls from women with errant snakes?"

Well yes and no. If a viper is in a real tight place that I would have to get my face close to, then yes I would be an exterminator. If it's not in a really tight place I use the ole hook and bucket. But, ratsnakes, watersnakes, hognose, and racers I let go. Kings I usually keep.

It's just been fun. Last year a black guy wanted be to stand in his garage while he cleaned it out, because he had found a snake skin. He give me some lumber for my trouble. Another time McDonald's in roebuck al shut down the play place becaus of a snake, so I went in and under every little toy and climbing thing and couldn't find anything. Had another friend call with yellow belly water snake that drove me crazy trying to find enough frogs to feed it. Finally let that one go.

So you kill snakes, because they are in hard to get places?

If I get a call from a worried person. Especiall with when kids are involved. I have half of a right thumb because of a cottonmouth bite. It was the most painful thing I ever experienced.

So instead of calling someone who can safely remove the animal (IE: Animal Control), you kill it because your stupidity got you bit and now the animals must suffer? Are you licensed to remove these animals? Have you ever seriously kept a venomous for any extended period of time? I don't care if you're missing you right arm, you shouldn't be out killing snakes. Seriously? Pick up the phone and call animal control, or invest in a pair of tongs from Pilstrom!

We have 2 animal control officers in the whole county. Last time I called one to take care of a out-of-control dog in my yard they said one was busy and one was on vacation. So I asked what about this dog in my yard that had bit me 3 times. They do what you gotta do.

I highly doubt that there are 2 animal control officers for the whole county. So I guess that justifies making you an animal control officer huh?

It could have been only 2 in the city. What ever when I called they said they were only 2 available. You sure you are not from west virginia.

We just recently got an animal control officer in the past month... And technically he isn't even animal control for our town, but if he isn't busy he's "allowed" to drive here if he wants to. Tiny towns don't always have the money to pay for what they don't think is necessary.

I think He's just saying he got a call from some people who had a snake problem because they know he deals with snakes. An exterminator cost money, but a snake lover, and an Alabamian would take a hot meal, Sweet tea, or other odd and ends as payment for removing some thing someones scared of instead of telling that person to just deal with it which will always result in the death of the snake and possibly harm the person dealing with it...

Please remember things aren't always the same state to state and town to town.

All I'm saying is, you shouldn't be killing any snake simply because yo don't have the resources to remove it. There are plenty of very safe alternatives that won't harm the animal or you. I just think the idea of a snake lover killing a snake is a little disturbing.

Not everyone has those resources available and it may take a while to get them and if the snake is in a place where it could cause harm to people and children then you really have to think which is more important, the life of the person/child or the life of the snake?
