Gargoyle gecko information

None of the Rhac forums that I've checked out are as robust as CS.com, but that makes sense considering that they have only been around a bit more than a decade and not as many people own or have heard of them. Sounds like the Repashy boards are also fairly active, I haven't checked them out myself.

I've noticed not much goes on on the Pangea forums except for things about crested geckos...
Kinda sad. No love for gargs.

Most rhac forums are going to have more posts about cresties simply because there are more people that own cresties. Over the last few months I have noticed more garg, chewing, and leachie posts though.

Tavia, I'm not knockin' cs.com. I'm sure there are many experienced rhac owners here, but it is a cornsnake forum. I think there are probably even more experienced owners on a rhac forum though. I personally wouldn't go to a snake forum asking gecko questions and vice versa. Unless there was someone I knew was experienced in snakes on the gecko forum and vice versa.

Anyways, back to the OP...

Yeah, I'm just saying that there aren't going to be as many members, activity and posts on a forum for an animal that is so comparatively new compared to corn snakes.

Josie, hope the weather will get into shipping range for you soon! I'm hoping it doesn't ruin my plans for picking up my garg tomorrow, it's snowed about 4" today and it's still coming down. Has it been snowing there, or just cold?

Actually, the Pangea forums are pretty active right now since the breeding season is coming up.

Speaking of snow, we got about 8 inches over here, I think. Some melted and then it snowed some more... winter sucks for shipping. XD

Oh, I see now.... :p (I wanted an embarrassed smiley but there isn't one)

We got sleet Thursday night and then it turned to snow and I think we got about 6 inches and they are calling for more. It was hitting us at about 1-2 inches an hour. We are still trying to dig my car out since the lovely plow truck driver buried me when he plowed our street. This is the third major snow storm we've had this winter that has started out with ice. I'll take this snow over the ice storm we had a few weeks ago. My car looked like a m & m, totally incased in a hard shell of ice an inch think.

I have gotten a lot of good information from this form and I have been pointed to good information on other forms by the good people here on cs. I think there is a growing number of us here that are keeping gargoyles. I would love to remember what morph the male was that I saw at the expo, he was $300.

Sorry to resurrect this thread but i totally went into petco today to look at their corns. The lady was like "I will not touch the corns, they are mean and bite constantly. Everyone has been bit and we haven't sold any of them since they came". I was like whaaa?? I totally thought corns were nice and chill. I'm thinking petco has some really stressed out corns! At any-rate she really tried to sell me on the gargoyle geckos. I have never heard of them. Before i knew it she put 2 in my hands. Honestly that was one of the coolest creatures I have ever seen. Now I must make the choice, a corn or a gecko! UGH i can only have one. They both take up the same amount of cage room and I only got a dorm :( These geckos look amazing but are they as fun as holding a snake? They seem harder to care for than corns...ideas?

It depends. In some ways they are easier to care for, in some harder. They don't require heat, in most cases, whereas corns usually do. If you buy their food in bulk, it is probably less expensive to feed one gecko than one snake. They do need to be fed every two days and usually misted once or even twice a day. In a dire situation, the gecko can go three days tops without you there, provided with plenty of water and food. Whereas a snake can much more easily go a week without you, if you can't get a sitter. They are both reptiles, which don't generally like interaction in the same sense as most mammals but I'd say they are fairly comparable handling wise. They feel quite different, one has legs and can and will jump and the other doesn't. Some people will like one or the other better but that's more a personal preference. I would suggest trying to find a calm snake to hold and see if you like it better.

Gargoyle geckos are probably easier to care for than corns in a dorm, and WILL stay at a manageable size, while some corns may get a bit bigger than you want.

Let me start out by saying that the corns in Petco may have been stressed, or the producer sold them to Petco instead of individuals because they are/were "hatelings", aggressive or overly frightened hatchlings.

With heating, you'd need to get a heating pad and thermo/reo-stat to regulate for a corn, while gargoyles do fine with no heating or cooling as long as it stays around 65F to 78F.

Gargoyles will also eat food that comes in a jar. Just add water (or don't xD). Around 8 dollars for 50 grams (1.75 ounces) of Repashy Crested Gecko Diet at Petco. That should last a really long time since babies eat very little, and adults only need feeding every 2 nights or so, but also don't eat very much.

A 10 gallon or 20 gallon long tank is plenty big for one adult. Since gargoyle geckos, probably around 80% of the ones I've checked out, are horrible climbers and generally live at the base of trees in the wild, they'll enjoy more floor space than height and need rough climbing branches (as opposed to many other geckos sticking upside down on glass XD).

My 30 gram or so gargoyle is like a puppy dog, somewhat. She's very calm, likes to hide in my robe, explore when she gets the chance.

Just about all care sheets are good. PangeaReptile has a great one on cresties and gargoyles, since their care is just about identical.

IMO you can't go wrong with a corn or a gargoyle gecko.

I would suggest checking out breeders online in your area for corns or geckos! Most animals in petshops have not been handled and there for tend to be scared of people. How old were the corns in Petco? If they were young hatchlings and sold off without being handled a lot they will be scared and there for my bite or squirm but MOST settle down with handling. I have 9 corns and I only have a problem with biting with one.

I have not been able to have my gargoyle shipped yet, it has either been nasty weather on my end or the breeders but we are hoping for this week.

My gargoyle gecko has finally made it! Here are some pics I grabbed quick because she was seriously stressed when she arrived.

She settled down after about an hour after getting here, hasn't been fired up since then. That last picture I posted reminds me of an alligator. LOL I still haven't messed with her and probably won't until at least tomorrow. I don't want to stress her any more then being shipped did.

I ordered Repashy from Josh's frogs and I'm hoping it will be here tomorrow or Tuesday! I have tried offering her a cricket and some banana baby food but she hasn't shown interest in either. I wanted to ask what kind of food dish do you use?

I just use bottle caps. My geckos "usually" eat for 1 to 3 days and then fast for 1 to 3 days. I offer food anyway, since sometimes they don't follow that schedule. However, all of mine that I bought, either locally or had shipped, didn't eat for the first week. From what I've heard that is pretty typical during their settling in period.

Thank God! I was starting to get very worried. I have a low ceramic dish in her cage but she hasn't even went near it. She loves the plants that are in it though.

I cannot find out when she ate last since the breeder has never answered her phone and I've left two messages.
