UPDATE 07/25/2014:

2 teens arrested for torturing a gopher tortoise

Officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) arrested two Clay County teenagers Friday morning on charges of torturing a gopher tortoise.

Danielle Susan Dionne, 15, and Jennifer Emoke Greene, 18, have been arrested on charges of felony cruelty to animals, a third-degree felony, and taking, harassing, harming or killing a gopher tortoise, a second-degree misdemeanor.

On July 15, the FWC received a tip about the torture and death of a gopher tortoise. FWC and Clay County Sheriff’s Office investigators immediately followed up on the information.

“We take these issues very seriously,” said Col. Calvin Adams, director of the FWC’s Division of Law Enforcement. “We appreciated the help from the public and our partners in working to protect our valuable natural resources.”

The FWC worked with the State Attorney’s Office of the Fourth Judicial Circuit to decide the appropriate charges related to the crime.

“We will not tolerate this behavior in the Fourth Judicial Circuit. We are committed to fully prosecuting those responsible for the torture and death of this vulnerable and threatened species,” said State Attorney Angela Corey.

If convicted, Greene faces up to five years in prison on the animal cruelty charge. The misdemeanor charge carries a penalty of up to 60 days in jail and/or a $500 fine.

Dionne’s case will be prosecuted in the juvenile system. Due to this fact, there will be no further comment on her case.

That's sick. Absolutely disgusting. I didn't even watch the video, and I don't want to. It's awful that someone would even think to do that, much less follow through.

I heard about this yesterday. I can't watch the video, but I feel like those girls could end up being serial killers.

FWC is already investigating. They also stomped one to death. But- they're juveniles. Slap on the wrist.

burned steak is horrible. :D

I agree, I prefer mine to be medium rare ;)

Anyhow, joking aside. I hope these girls are punished to the full extent, not only for animal abuse, but for taking an endangered species from the wild. Someone that one of them caught the turtle and kept it in a fish-bowl situation.
People don't just set animals on fire, it's one thing to kill an animal with a BB gun or arrow, as that's not really a hands on death and more of a hunt, but to set it on fire and stab it to death and not even feel bad really says there's something wrong psychologically.
I kill dozens of rats a month and even doing so humanely with CO2 I feel awful, I can't imagine how I would feel if I caught one on fire or stabbed it to death, even if it was an accident.

I watched that video this morning. Was NOT what I wanted to wake up to. The girl said that she has a court date and is facing a fine, and that she hopes to be forgiven and was sorry anyone had to see that. So basically, she'll do it again but won't record it. Evil people.

The fines for any animal law are way to forgiving. A man that was known to import animals through Mexico was found with $39,000 worth of birds in his car. It was said he did this every 6 weeks or so I just took them time to catch him. Penalty 2 months in jail. WTF I was told the fine for owning a green sea turtle was $150 and removed of the turtle but don't know how true that one is.

So the other girl is like "people are soft af, not like we took the last one off the planet. get over it."

^ I had to change the quote because I could not wrap my head around the complete lack of spelling and grammar. I am just so glad someone on her friends list took screen shots of everything and downloaded the video before she deleted it. These people are disgusting. The one girl even has a whole post from before they did this about how she cannot stand bullies. I guess if you can't stand against the bullies, join them by torturing animals??

Although, as this itself proves, people can be horrible, unpredictable and stupid, so I could be wrong. But I'd hope that even if all they get from the law is a slap on the wrist, the story and their names are all over the Internet. I know for sure if I was Googling one of them for a background check before hiring them for a job of any kind and found that, they would certainly not get the job! And at least that has the potential to haunt them the rest of their lives, as there are many situations where people finding out about this could negatively impact them. Sure hope they throw the book at them though!!

Sort of gets you to thinking that the legal concept of "an eye for an eye", isn't really all that bad of a deal after all.....

On a side note, if you do a search on Google for either of their names - this stuff pops up - so even if the courts don't give them a harsh penalty - good luck finding a job!!!!!

You know what the punishment is for selling a couple cornsnakes on Craigslist without your Florida Class III permit? $500 each...

I bet these pieces of excrement get a lesser punishment.

And the one girl's dad says- just let the law handle it- he doesn't care. He knows it will be nothing.

An indictment of what our society has become. Criminals are the most protected segment. :headbang:

I can guarantee you that my dad would NEVER "just let the law handle it" if I pulled this crap when I was there age...I wouldn't be able to walk for weeks and would probably be grounded eternally...there is something seriously wrong with society today and I don't see it changing any time soon unfortunately...
