Yesterday my little girl passed away.
Two months and a half ago we've lost Frigg
.. and now Hlin too :(

When we woke up in the morning, she was laying in a strange position.
So I checked on her. I didn't saw her head at first,
but then I noticed blood around her nose and mouth.
At first I thought she and an other girl had a fight,
but nothing wrong with the other ones
and no visible wounds on Hlin.

I rushed to the bathroom and started cleaning her nose and mouth.
I set up the spare cage and tucked her in a blanket.
Then I started cleaning the big cage, here and there was some blood.
5 minutes after I had tucked Hlin in the blanket, I checked on her.
Breathing was less difficult, I had given her some water.

..
but when my GF checked on her 5 minutes after me checking her.
She had stopped breathing. It was heartbreaking.
My little girl.. both of them

Aww I am SO sorry. You know, rats are known to die of a broken heart. Perhaps she just missed Frigg too much...

I've read something about that.
That's why we got her 2 new little sister as soon as possible,
so she wouldn't be too lonely.

I was thinking exactly what Elle wrote. But thinking about it....would that cause the blood to appear? My friend's rat died shortly after his cagemate died, but it was a literal "died in his sleep" type of death.

I'm so sorry about Hlin, Toshiro. I remember your first death and how sad that was. I'd keep a close watch on Hlin's tankmate in case of a contagion.

Toshiro, I am so sorry you lost your girl. It is so heartbreaking when they leave us. Most people have no idea that rats are such rewarding and wonderful pets, and many don't understand how difficult it is for us when we lose them. Besides the snakes, I will always keep rats for pets because every one I've ever had has been different and a joy to know. Losing them hurts, but it helps to know you've given them the best possible life. And remember, their lives are naturally so short that they don't feel shortchanged at all, it's us humans who love them that suffer the most. When I lose one, it HURTS...but I look at it as a chance to save another small life and make a new friend. There is no "replacing" one with another in my eyes...since rats are such a misunderstood and abused animal, when I lose one I rescue another, in the lost one's memory. It sounds stupid, but it does help me cope with loving a creature with such a short lifespan!

The "blood" around her nose and mouth was probably not blood at all. It's called porpheryn and is like our tears and mucus. When rats are stressed or if they sneeze, the result is porpheryn. One of my boys gets a red weepy eye when the temps get too hot or humid. My other boy is on meds for myco, and because of his sneezing I have to wash the red droplets off the wall when I clean the cage. But the drops wash off easily and don't stain and this is the "animal" room after all. It sounds as though your girl left you quickly and didn't suffer for too long.

Pm me if you need to talk. (HUGS)

I have 4 pet mice and I love them and I know I'd be very upset if anything happened to them. I'm very sorry for your loss, it's always very sad to hear that someone lost a pet. RIP Hlin and Frigg.
