Happy wild snake encounter at home thread.

Howdy folks! After all the hoo-ha, and angriness in another thread, I thought I would start a positive home/yard invasion snake experience thread.

Please tell us the stories of your encounters.

Here's mine:

I moved to South Carolina last year, into a very, shall we say - humble, abode. I wasn't there a week, when I went into the bathroom (where my snakes are), not turning on the light becasue it was day time and I tend towards being bat-like about lights, and notice on the bathroom rug in front of my bathtub the nice long shadow of a snake. I thought, "Oh no, my anery motley girl escaped." I turned on the light. It was not my snake! On the rug, stretched out and still, was a juvenile yellow rat snake. They call them chicken snakes around these parts. So I scooped her up and put her in a spare tank where I stored paper towel rolls. She didn't try to bite, just wiggled a bit. The next day I thawed her a good size mouse to eat, which she relished. Several days later I released her in the woods right behind the place. (I've moved since then.) I kinda wished I kept her, but I thought releasing her was the best thing to do. Anyway, THAT was a nice snake encounter. I thought, "South Carolina is welcoming me to the neighborhood."

Cheers.

Didn't someone here on the forums a couple of years back have one show up on their curtains??

That would be me and Joe.

I work from home and was having my lunch in our family living area. I happened to notice something moving on the top of the window - on the inside - and yelled for Joe. He thought I was panicking about another spider in the house but I asked him if he had lost a snake...
He said no and came to see what it was. It was a wild yellow rat snake sitting on the top of the windows! Don't know how it got in the house and past our dogs, cats, and us without being noticed. For a yellow rat - he was very calm - hence he was named "mellow yellow". We kept him for a short while and then gave him to Mike (mbdorfer).

Here are some pics of him at Mike's house:

The first snake I found at my house was a yellow rat. I heard birds going crazy on the front yard fenceline, and went out to find this:

A year or so later, I was out under my big pine picking up a brush pile and found Maizey, the first corn I had ever seen. I kept him. Parasites and all!

A month or so later, I was weed whacking and found this little guy. Oh, a corn hatchling! But it bites like CRAZY! It turned out to be a baby black racer. I released it, since it's rare to tame one.

I relocated this young black racer from a friend's steps to my yard, and recently spotted him about a week ago, again while weed whacking. I was very pleased that he'd chosen to stay! When I first captured him, I discussed with him the possibility of becoming a pet, but he declined, vigorously. I respected his wishes.

Wooooooooo, he even has a mean look in his eye :)

There's tons of garter snakes around here... TONS. There's some places near where I live where if I go for a walk it's guaranteed I will either see a garter or a western yellow bellied racer. I've seen them at several properties where I do yard work too. Last time I went hiking I was lucky to get to watch a wild red spotted garter eat a field mouse it had caught. I only spotted it because I heard some squeaking in the tall grass, and when I looked it was a garter snake eating a mouse, butt first. Poor little thing squeaked all the way down and I still heard a muffled squeak or two after its head disappeared LOL. This is what I take with me on hikes - we have several different species of garters and it is nice to have a reference book. The snake I saw eating the mouse was the same kind as the one on the cover.

when i was about three, my parents woke up early in the morning hearing the shampoo bottle falling into the tub. so they went to check what it was and it was a 5ish foot long bull snake. i was three so i dont remember it at all. first snake encounter i remember is when i rescued a garter from my cousins cats.

All right! Good start on this thread. It was nice to see the mellow yellow rats. Maybe only the captive bred once are nippy. :)
