Has anyone ever sold jewelry?

So I'm finding myself in a situation where I need some fast cash. I have a ton of rare pieces of jewelry from my mother. I have no daughters to pass these pieces on to, and while I'll be keeping some of the more sentimental things like her wedding rings and such, I'm wondering how to go about selling the rest? I see these "sellgoldforcash" sites and think they MUST be bogus, but really, how would one go about finding an honest person to pay what some of these are worth? Should I try a typical jewelry store? Surely not a pawn shop, but I've never done it so I don't know if that's a legit place or not. Any tips or advice?

I have had to do the same thing and shopped around. Take the pieces to at least three different places first to see what they offer. It's a free appraisal and you can decide who to go with. I sold mine to a friend's shop who gave me the best price, but make sure you know their real worth first. My stuff wasn't rare at all so don't allow someone to rip you off if it's actually nice stuff!

Thanks, Robbie. I've considered ebay, but I'd like to sell the entire case to one person if possible. I think I need to have it all re-appraised, but again, I'm afraid of being pwned. Many of these pieces are antiqes, while others are new with disgustingly large diamonds. My mom's tastes were a bit gawdy, and she loved to be, literally, dripping with carats. :p

Thanks, Danielle! Did you take them to typical jewelry stores? I think taking them to several is a great idea. Only some of the pieces are rare. Thanks for your advice.

Antique roadshow man? If they are rare do not by any means go to some jewelry store. I got a good deal because i nanny for their daughter and still went to three others before ever asking them what they thought. I was asking if the prices were good and he said no, but offered me twice as much and this stuff was run of the mill to be honest. Maybe check out local antique auctions after have them appraised so you don't get ripped off.

Thanks, Danielle. I'd love to do the Roadshow, but I'd be the person showing up with "this vase was purchased by my grandfather in the first WW and it's been passed down to my family, yada yada..." and they scrape a bit of paint away that shows it was made in china. I'd have to hang my head in shame.

I just don't know who to trust with these pieces. Even some of her costume type stuff is wrought with 14k gold, but I just have a hard time trusting someone who offers to buy stuff on tv. Now if was Billy Blanks telling me to come down to his store, I'd be there in a heartbeat. After all, he does the magic putty. How can you NOT trust a man with magic putty???

Don't sell to the 'cashforgold' type of deals. You'll get less than market price for scrap precious metal. They don't care that its handed down.

I will say be prepared to get hardly anything near what it's worth using other methods though.
I took diamond earrings with platinum bases, a platinum wedding ring with 5 diamonds in it and the jeweler told me diamonds that are used and used gold etc will only get you a fraction of the price. He told me I'd get like 75-150 dollars for both of them and I decided to keep them.

Very true! I once had to pawn two rings for an emergency situation and only got $150 a piece for them when they were actually appraised at about $400 a piece. But I needed the money fast and didn't have the time to go the ebay route. If a lot of it is antique I would definetly try to contact some antique dealers near you and see what they may be willing to offer it for.

sellgoldforcash is totally a scam, you can read employee accounts of their jobs online. Don't know if it's true for sure, but it's enough for me to think they're shady.

I love jewelry. That's all I really wanted to add to this thread.
(mmmmmm snake jewelry especially)

A friend of mine owns a pawn shop..... They will only give you scrap value, no matter how antique it is.... It all goes for re melting......
You need to get pics of each piece, get a rough idea of how much it will cost to replace each item...... Then you know what to do next... ;)

Estate jewelry does not sell for anywhere near what jewelry sells for at retail. You might want to do a search on Ebay to see what similar pieces sold for. Ebay DOES have alot of traffic, and buyers. Even if you decide not to sell on Ebay, by doing a search you can see what people are willing to pay for pieces like yours. A place to start, anyway :)

I do sell jewelry, but it's just sterling, goldfilled and costume I find at Christmas Bazaars and yard sales. If I pay $1 for it, and I know it's worth $30, I'll sell it between $8 and $10, depending on how much I like it :)

I would love to see a few pictures of some of your mom's things. I LOVE bling! My favorite find this year is a 10k gold nugget ID bracelet inscribed with the name "HENRY P". I paid $1 for it at a Christmas bazaar in November. I never take it off!

I found a genuine opal pendant today (has three on it actually). Hard to find ones that aren't lab created or doublets/triplets. I loooove opals and they are my birth stone as well!

Seriously?
Where?
Yard sale?
Feel free to post a pic in my forum under the Christmas bazaar/treasurehunters thread! I'd love to see it!
