Hi all,

I just joined the forums after finding links to the site in a few corn snake books I've recently read.

My name is Jen, I'm from NH and I've wanted a snake all my life. I've recently decided that there is no better time than now. I am very excited about all the color morphs and I kind of have my heart set on an Abbott's Okeetee, or perhaps another bright color morph (but I want black eyes).

I am doing a bunch of research now and trying to convince my husband that this is a good idea, so I'll be around asking tons of questions. Right now I'm in the stages of researching cages & heat and such. It is pretty chilly in NH so I'm worried about how I will keep a decent temp for a snake when it is routinely 65-ish in my house in the winter.

There is a reptile expo in New Hampshire in April, which is when I hope to be all set up with a cage/heat/food and was planning on browsing for my future pet. I'm curious to know, though, if anyone could recommend a breeder that will be at the show, or if anyone here is a breeder in the new england area. I'd really like to see the snakes in person.

I'm glad I found this site and hope to talk with lots of you in the future!

My house (in Florida) gets down to 64F at night, in the winter. As long as you have an appropriate-sized UTH (on a thermostat!) you won't hae any problems.

Hey Jen! :wavey: Welcome to the site, and kudos for doing all your research before jumping into the hobby! You're off to a great start, and there ARE some breeders here that are in NE. Best of luck to you!!

WELCOME!!!!

Hi, Jen! Great thinking to join up and get things right. Hope you have a good time choosing your first Corn!!!

BTW, we'd love to see pics of the "CHOSEN" one. LOL!

Thanks everyone. Looks like this is a pretty active forum, I didn't expect the quick response!

I've got a newb question... How would one get in contact with Lee to get one of those gorgeous Abbotts Okeetees? I google'd but came up with nothing : (

Welcome.
I'm fairly new to owning snakes myself.
This site was the best for me and I hope for you too.
There is a wealth of information here so don't be afraid to search what you don't know and ask what you don't find.

excellent, thanks! after reading my corn snake books and jumping on these forums, i'm a bit awe struck. kathy love posts here? i can buy an abbott's okeetee directly from lee abbott? holy crap, this is the best thing ever! i'm going to enjoy this hobby :spinner:

Welcome to the forum, Jen. You have found one of the best places on the internet for advice and expertise on all herps. I hope you enjoy yourself here.

Thought I'd post a quick update...I have the official go-ahead from my husband to get my first corn snake!

Today I started looking at supplies and picked up some hot hands on sale (in case the power goes out!) and a dual thermometer w/ hygrometer.

I am getting a 20 gal tank from my friend tomorrow, then all the fun setup stuff begins!

Oh yeah, then I actually have to find a snake : )

Welcome to the forum Jen.
I can tell you firsthand that working with Lee directly is a pleasure. We actually stopped and talked to him for a bit today at the expo here in Tampa. You cannot go wrong with an Abbott Okeetee!

Funny you say that... I sent him an e-mail Friday night asking him what he had in stock, and received a quick reply Sat morning. He said he was headed off to the expo, but could hold back a nice male Jun '08 yearling like the F-1 on his site. So, I immediately jumped on that! I sent the money via paypal yesterday, so he is going to hold my oke until I set up my tank (and get back from a well deserved vacation!)

Here is the pic he sent me:

...and here are the supplies I bought today!

I am so very very excited!!

Ok, I've given up on the 20L tank I got for free from my friend (an ex-aquarium w/ scratches & gravel & gooey crap on the sides.

I found the deal of the century today in Petco. They are moving across the street so they are having a 20-40% off sale. I got a 20 L Zilla critter cage for only $35!! The girl that helped me was very nice. There was only 1 left, with no screen, so she took one of the sliding screens off the Zilla turtle tank and hooked me up!

So I am setting up my new snake's home tonight... I have a few questions:

1. I bought some pipe wrap insulation tape. Can I use this around the edges of the UTH to stick it to the bottom securely without peeling off the paper & physically sticking it on the tank with the self-adhesive? I am worried about leaving the papery cover on the UTH.

2. I have a thermostat w/ a temp probe and a digital thermometer w/ temp probe. Should I place these under the substrate on the glass under the hide? Will the snake burrow & get stuck in them? Should I use anything to secure the probes to the bottom of the tank that is snake-safe?

Before I do anything with this UTH I'm going to wait for some replies. ;)

Thanks again in advance!

Hey I'm bumping my newbie hello thread so that I can figure out this signature thing.

Very newb question: in all your sigs, what's with the 1.0 vs 0.1, 0.2 etc? I want a sig too! Sorry, I tried searching first but didn't find any decent info in the results that popped up.

Welcome to the forum!

Sounds like you are off to a good start! It is always nice to see somebody doing all of the research BEFORE getting a snake instead of asking emergency questions AFTER, lol!

I saw Lee at the Tampa show a few weeks ago. He still had some really pretty okeetees, even though this is almost the worst time for corns as far as the selection goes (most people are just breeding now, or possibly getting eggs. So only last year's "leftovers" are available now). So it sounds like you are ordering some "just in time", while there are still some impressive '08s left!

Hope to see you around the forum!

I didn't notice the dates you originally posted when I read through it all - did you get your okeetee yet?
