High End Herps = Busted

More bad publicity, but from the looks of it, these people richly deserve it.

The news story...

OAKDALE, LA (KPLC) - The Allen Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating possible animal cruelty charges against snake breeders in south Oakdale.

The sheriff's office received permission to investigate the "High End Herps, Inc." snake breeding business after a woman filed a criminal complaint against the breeders.

The woman said the two snake breeders advertised their business as a "germ free safe haven" for unwanted animals.

But when she found her dog for sale on-line, she took action with a criminal complaint.

Upon entering the residency of David Beauchemin and Tawni Beauchemin-Eddy, conditions led authorities to question whether or not the couple was feeding caged animals to their hungry snakes.

"We found conditions relating to cruelty to animals," said Chief Deputy Grant Willis of the Allen Parish Sheriff's Office. "Sanitary conditions there were very poor. We have been seizing evidence that will be tested later in the lab to see if there is anything illegal pertaining to the animals."

Authorities found other violations made by the snake breeders.

State law requires owners with snakes exceeding 12 feet in length to obtain a permit for their pet.

Twenty two of the almost 250 snakes exceeded 12 feet in length.

Since the snake breeders failed to get a permit for these snakes, all 22 of those snakes will be taken out of the residency.

David and Tawni Beauchemin remain behind bars as they have both been charged with an initial complaint of cruelty to an animal.

Investigators are currently waiting for lab results to see if any additional charges will be filed.

This is the same location that previous complaints have been filed regarding missing pets. In those cases, the sheriff's department said the snake breeder didn't break any laws, so they were not able to enter the premises to investigate

This part confuses me....

They were pretending to be a dog and cat rescue and then either selling the animals or feeding them to large snakes. :( :( :(

Or both. And based on the pictures found at the links, taking terrible care of the large snakes too. Why must people do things like this?!

Isn't High End Herps the group that professes to "guarantee" to take back a big boid of their breeding that grows too large for the owner to handle??

Ugh.. that's just plain wrong. If my cat disappeared for ANY reason I would be devastated.. let alone if I found out someone caught him and fed him to something. I don't think I'd ever be the same.

.....I wouldn't be either. My god...how could someone come to terms with something like that... I hate (not too strong a word) stupid freaks that ruin good things (in this case, boids) for other people who are not stupid freaks (you know...like us good people who have dreams of a lovely big boa when we've got a house and ability to care for it...forever. what can I say? somepeople want kids, I want snakes.)

That's just bleeping wrong. Thinking they can keep these giants in such cramped enclosures and bragging about it. Then the mod telling people not to post negative comments when people question it. :headbang:

Sick people. Want to see how these people were really keeping the animals? Check this out..http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/showthread.php?t=40006 That should have been reported back when it was posted so some thing could have been done then.

I wish someone would have reported it back then. That snake looked depressed to say the least. that was a horrible encloser. And then they went on to tell a person he could keep 8 in the space that a couch takes up....

Its good to see people get in trouble for doing horrible things to their animals. Its just bad that it has to keep happening when there is important legislation that is against reptile keepers, going through congress......

Those two sound like real pleasant people - sigh.

There was a bad case in the UK involving about 50 horses - and just from the sanitised for TV pictures I was cringing. Im not a fan of horses but to treat animals that way is pure viciousness.

If they have been feeding other peoples property to snakes they're gonna be in all sorts of legal problems over and above the cruelty charges - I would guess that involves studying the 'gorillas in the mist' in the showers lol, for at least one of them...

and a good thing too :(

That actually brought tears to my eyes - the poor animal - a beautiful snake but how on earth someone could think that its ok to keep a snake of such a size like that I hate to think... I know its frowned upon to anthropomorphise on here but I have never seen an animal look so defeated and depressed. I sincerely hope that some PETA nutjob or 'helpful' vetinarian hasnt decided to have the animal put down or something...

After seeing that I hope they do end up in jail and if the other inmates write to me I will source them some specially slippery soap and the relevant 'husbandry' equipment for free... come on guys and gals ... its Bonobo time !

If I ever get my hands on such a beautiful animal I'd let her roam the flat free or something before I put her in that sort of hell-hole - its not as if she'd escape like a corn or something... just remember to shut my bedroom door of a night.

I cannot believe that someone could ever think thats ok - its not even ok as a handling box since its pretty clear the poor animal would break the thing in half if someone tried to lift her...

I have a dim memory as a pre teen (10-12 years old) of going to the local zoo and for some reason they had to move a snake - I would guess it was a retic or anaconda - 30 schoolkids with a snake carried on one shoulder right through the zoo, far as I can remember the snake just sat there oblivious, but looking with interest at the various different forms of lunch as she lumbered by...
