Hognose Pairs

DeadMouse

Hungry, hungry Hognose!
I recently started pairing up my Western Hognose together for the upcoming breeding season. Naturally with these snakes, I always get some interesting shots. Enjoy!

And for fun, here's a picture of one of our Tri-Colored females scarfing down a mouse:

Awesome pics. Berry and Sherry have to be my fave. I have not seen that morph before and they are just beautiful!

So cute! I didn't know they came in pink!

Please remember to post babies here when you sell them, 'cuz I want one! I have been looking on CL etc, but if you are going to be selling, I want to wait for some of these to hatch!

Gorgeous shots of gorgeous snakes!! Great...another species to put on my "Must Have" list...

While still quite rare in collections, Pink Pastel Albinos, or PPA for short, have actually been around for quite a while. Unfortunately, there used to be health/genetic problems with the line probably caused by too much inbreeding which supposedly has finally been outcrossed out. Right now they seem to be in high demand due to a few of us having adult animals that are finally breeding.

While our male is a proven breeder and has always done very good for us, our female has been a problem child almost from the time we got her. She's never been a consistent eater and at one point had to be pinky pumped to maintain her weight. Fortunately she's finally started to become a more consistent eater and has actually gained quite a bit of weight over the last 6 months. While not yet big enough to breed this year, if she continues with her current eating regimen, she should be ready to go next year.

I did hatch 2 clutches of het PPA's last year which I was selling for $800 a pair, but after careful consideration, I decided to hold them all back to use as breeders for various projects. Also, the first clutch was from a virgin blond female and Berry which produced some banded individuals, this one female being the most outstanding specimen:

With any luck, I hope to produce some more banded hognose, preferably some PPA's. :D

Those shots are adorably awesome!

Thanks Robbie!

Great pics...love the clear macro shots. Beautiful hoggies.

Thanks Graham! I was fortunate that this time most of the hoggies were sitting still so that I could get those shots. Normally when I put a male with the female, that female is hyper and all over the place with the little males desperately trying to hop on their backs, it's a hilarious sight!

They are so darn cute. I wish we could own them here :(

You can't own any where you live or are they illegal to keep in your town? If I'm not mistaken, there's several hognose owners in Canada although I am unsure where exactly they live.

Thanks Chris! Hehehe, yeah, the "must have" list is always ongoing and growing. :)

Well, all I want is a cute hognose, color & pattern not highly important. So maybe you'll end up with a male who is surplus to project requirements, because I woudl vastly prefer to deal with someone here than j-random breeder elsewhere!

I have to say, though, the pink is just so adorable. It's like a snake colored for girly little girls.

Edit: I really like the banded patterning though, that's something I could really want on my hognose!

Maybe a deterrent in wanting a PPA is the price which has been consistently holding at about $1200 an animal for the last several years. Unfortunately, most hognose morphs are still highly expensive with the exception of albinos which have gone down to ~$300. Everything else is over $1000.

I actually have a few normal males that I hatched out in 2008 that I'm unsure whether I'm going to use them for anything or not although probably not as I have an abundance of normal and normal/het males. Feel free to check out my web site to see what I have in my collection as well as what I have available. :)

The PPA's are my wife's favorite although our Superconda is probably a close second. After all, she was the one that instigated the purchasing of all 3 regardless of price. :crazy02:

There are starting to emerge more and more banded and striped hogs although no real extensive breeding has been yet done to determine whether this is a line trait or a Mendelian one but I think that most believe that it's more of a line trait than anything else. It should be interesting to see what happens when I start selective breedings with my striped hets. :)

I can see why, if I am being stereotypic, the wife would love the PPAs! They are like the pink Smith & Wesson handguns, so girlie. I'm a girl so I can say that. But it's great she supports your snakes, or you support hers, whichever.

It will be interesting to see what's up with the banding, it's neat.

Wow, looks like sometime this year I will be ordering a hognose from you. The boys from 08 would certainly do, or if you hatch out a male het this year who is surplus to requirements, since it looks like you are working hard on a big range of hognose color morphs!

Edit: At least now I know from whom I am going to buy a hognose, no more looking at CL or ks.com.

Oh yeah, the second she saw the PPA's at an NARBC show, she was hooked! I think we spent about $3000 on just 3 hognose that fateful day which ultimately transformed our collection and desires more towards the hognose than any other snake. They are just sooooo unique and personable!

It's a shared obsession for sure! I'm fortunate to have someone in my life who enjoys this hobby just as much as I do even if she's typically a bad influence on me when I try to hold back on acquiring more snakes ("Just get it, you know you want it"). ;)

I agree, I think it's a very cool pattern mutation which will hopefully prove out. At least there are some interesting pattern morphs that are finally emerging such as the Anaconda/Supercondas, the Spiders and the bandeds and striped. The stripes are typically a quite bit more subtle usually with just a thin line running down the spine, but considering some of the aberrant patterns that the Anaconda's produce, I guess anything is possible at this time. :)

Just let me know when you are ready as I've been holding onto my babies for this long. It's just hard to let something go when you've hatched and raised them and then not knowing who is going to get them. I just want someone to get them that's going to love them and take care of them as much as I do. That's why I like forums such as this as it's geared more towards private collectors or smaller breeders than some of the more competitive forums I sometimes participate on. :)

Not only do you have top-notch hoggies....but I just checked your site and you greybands are stunning!! I really like seeing breeders who care about snakes as real animals, not because of their value.

Well, I have a thought. Any of those boys hets that you would like access to? Because if one is, I'll take him, and then I can breeding loan him back if you ever need his hets. That way I have the cute pet hognose I want but you don't lose access to the genes.

Nice update, Troy!! the hoggies look great!! I can't wait till you have pippies.

Thanks Nanci! We can't wait either. There's just so many projects we'd like to get involved with, but it's all dependent on who wants to breed this year. At least Berry is our little stud muffin. If anything, I'll eventually end up with a ton of het PPA's if nothing else.

Thank you so much for the kind words. You know, I am very lucky to not only have such a great wife who is just as much into the reptiles as I am, but to be so lucky to have an opportunity to own such wonderful animals. We love them all dearly regardless of their "value". What I love most though about the hoggies is that they are so much more personable than any other species I have so far kept. Of course that makes it very very hard for me to want to part with any of them, especially the ones I've hatched out (which is probably why I haven't sold a single snake yet ). But one of these days I'll cut the "umbilical" and share the joy of owning such wonderful animals. :)

It's illegal to own Western & Eastern Hognose in Alberta. I know it's okay in Ontario, not sure about the other provinces.

That's interesting and yet quite sad. Do you know why they are illegal to own? Is it because they are rear-fanged and considered mildly venomous? Thanks for letting us know. :)
