Peanut Lover

New member
I don't know if anyone saw my post last week, but I have lost my one and only corn snake, Peanut. It has been 8 days since he slipped away! I looked everywhere in my apartment for him and I just feel so hopeless. I am heart broken :awcrap: Should I keep looking for him or is that just scaring him more into hiding by moving everything around? Do you think he will eventually wander out in the My roommates aren't letting me leave pinkies out anymore.

On top of it all...it turns out the cat dragged fleas into the apartment. We took the cat out so that it would find/kill Peanut, but now my roommates want to spray flea bmbs everywhere and I am afraid it's going to kill my snake! Please, I need advice! What should I do!?

Oops this accidentally posted before I was done...but yes, my main questions are

1)If I give up looking for my snake, do you think he will show up on his own, or should I just keep looking?
2) Is he gone for good?
3) If we let the cat back do you think he will be killed?
4) If we spray flea killer everywhere will that kill him?
5)How long should I wait for him to turn up before buying a new corn?
6) Any suggestions on how to /where to find my snake?

PLEASE HELP AND REPLY

I really cant help much, never lost my snake before, but i know how it feels to lose pets and cant find them. All i can say is look un and under anything he can fit under, my corn loves to burrow under the aspen even more then his hides.

Best of luck, and hopefully someone else can help

i would say from talking to people at the reptile expo i was at, yes the cat will find and kill or play with it. i have a friend that has outdoor cats and one of his kill and brought a copperhead to his porch. Not sure about the flea bomb, but i would say most likely yes it would kill if not do harm to it.

Awww i just don't know what to do...my roommates want the cat back and want the fleas gone, but I feel like if I say "yes" to that then I feel like I'm pulling the plug on Peanut's life support:( I feel like if I do that, he will be gone for good:(

You never know... there are plently of peopel on here who have lost hatchlings and months later they just show up. Also it really depends on the cat.. some cats will hunt and kill small animals, and others don't really care if there are snakes or mice running around. The last thing to remember is that snakes have a VERY good sense of smell and even if you guys use the flea bomb, the snake might very well avoid the poison. I don't have any idea how the flea bowb works but a lot of time they are designed specifically not to harm huimans and pets at all. I know your snake is very small, but he is a lot larger than a flea and the poison may very well not affect him at all.

You can also try some other things that your roomates might not be as annoyed with.. Get some making tape (make sure its liek painters tape, nothing too sticky!!!) and lay it along the sides of the walls.. that way if peanut slithers through it at night he will become tangled up and you can very gently untangle him using vergetable oil warm water and a patient hand. You can also sprinkle some flour on tile or wood floors ro see if he's been crawling through those areas. Chances are he's hidden himself somewhere dark and quiet.. so don't waste too much time chekcking under livingroom counches and such. Look in the backs of closets, in spare or storage rooms, any rooms with a water heater or central air or anything like that..

I would say try to get on your roomates good side so they will tolerate you putting out tape and stuff.. also you might want to leave some towels or shirts cruppled up in corners or along the walls (not out in the open) I know my snakes love to borrow down in blankets.

Good luck! Don't be too hard on yourself. If you want a new snake then you should get one, but remember that you could some day stumble across peanut and then you will need to provide a seperate enclosure, heat, etc.

Peanut is in my thoughts!

Also dont underestimate your snake, I had a crayfish that climbed up the air hosing tube from my 55g aquarium in my room and somehow went down the hallway, down the steps and across the kitchen where my dad found him alive before i knew he was missing.... Still wondering how he managed to do it, thought may be my dog took him in he mouth, but i doubt he would leave the cray alive.

Good luck with finding peanut. xStaticSnow stated some great ideas imo.

Cant you just put frontline or Advantage on the cat for now.It should deal with most the fleas, they jump on him and die. Tell them to just wait one more week to bomb the apartment
You can use Duct tape too.But to get it off you have to use oil, like vegetable oil and work it off.I caught a lost kingsnake once with a sticky trap for mice,it wasnt really that hard to get it off the snake either and he was stuck tight(it was an accident it got stuck to the trap not planned). You have to be careful with the tape, dont pull it off, just work the oil onto the sticky parts and slowly let it release the snake. You can use Qtips to help with getting it off. This is a thread on another board, it looks bad but its better then having a dead snake from the flea bombs.

You can also make a snake trap with a 1 liter pop bottle.Dont know how well it would work though. Here is an old thread from this forum on how to make it

Thank-you for the support...I currently have a heating pad set up under a blanket in one corner of the room with a water bowl next to it. I have heard horror stories about tape ripping snakes' scales off. So just get normal masking tape, not duct tape? I'd be willing to try that. Should I waste time leaving a pinky out in my room? (It's pretty far from the area where I lost him).

Im just thinking masking tape may not hold him. I guess it depends on how big the snake is.You can always try it on your own skin just to see if you can get it off without hurting yourself..If your not comfortable dont use it, use something less sticky. If you use the masking tape instead use long strips that he will get tangled in, if they are small pieces he will just drag them off.
Its scary that they want to bomb the apartment.I mean between the cat and the poisons its got quite an obstacle course going on.I do hope you find him soon.

Have you considered using food grade diatomaceous earth? It's safe to use around animals, & it will kill anything with an exo skeleton (fleas, ants, spiders...)

It's not a chemical, it is is ground up diatoms (shells) that cut into the exoskeleton of the bugs & dehydrates them.

I just put masking tape all around the edges of the dark corners in my apartment (under the kitchen counter, under the bathroom counter, behind the couch, etc) but I am a hot mess. My bitchier roommate (who hates snakes) found flee bites today and says she is buying 8 flee bombs and bombing the place tomorrow. She said she is not waiting. Poor little peanut is going to be like a jew in the holocaust

They are going to gas him to death unless I happen to catch him on the tape tonight! Any chances of him surviving? I'm hoping he's hidden deep away enough to not get the gas.

I feel like tomorrow is like an execution...i feel so nauseous.:crying:

If you're going to use tape, use masking tape or painters tape. Less chance of hurting him.

My escapee was caught on painters tape, no damaged scales. Held her just long enough. If you do catch Peanut with tape, and it doesn't come off easily, use some vegetable oil.

just check really good. Also if your house is a little cold check in warm places like the water heater and other warm places. mine got out once, but he was under the tank on the UTH.

As far as the fleas on the cat goes, I know of another way that HOPEFULLY you can skip the whole flea bomb thang altogether. Get a Capstar pill of appropriate weight for your cat. They sell them at vets. That will kill all the fleas on the cat RIGHT NOW. Then get your cat on Frontline, Advantage, Vectra whatever is made for fleas for cats AND BUY IT FROM A VET! Please skip the over the counter knock offs and online brands. Keep them on the flea treatment religiously for 3-4 months. This should take care of the flea issue without the bombs. Flea bombs do not work on larvae or eggs. NOTHING works on those! You just have to wait until they hatch out, mature and then the before mentioned products will take care of them.

Also check your clothes drawers. Someone here found a lost snake in their underwear drawer!
