I had to have my pet rat put down today.

Proud Momma
I came home from work last night to find him at death's door. I was suprised he even made it the night.
But I couldn't let him suffer anymore and clearly he was.
I just didn't have the heart to build my own C02 chamber and do it at home, so I took him to the vet. Cost me $83 and they wouldn't even let me be in with him.
I'm quite distraught right now.

RIP Sirius

Poor Sirius. I'm very sorry for your loss. Kudos to you for giving him a respectable end. A lot of people wouldn't have gone to the "trouble" for a rodent. I find your compassion admirable! Reps to you...

Chris

I'm so sorry Jenn. Those little guys have a way of getting so close to you, and they never live long enough :(

I'm sorry. I'm glad he had a painless dignified end. I'm curious, though- would they have not let you be there for a dog or cat??

Nanci, they said that they felt their two methods, either injection to the heart or the small gas chamber was not patient friendly...Whatever that is supposed to mean. They assured me that both methods would just put him to sleep anyway. So I'm not quite sure why I could have been there. But when I called the specifically said for "small animal/exotics" that they didn't want you in there. I'm just glad he didn't know what was going on anymore at that point.
Thank you for your condolonces guys, I just wish there was something more I could have done for him.

I thought the same thing. I don't like that. I think I would find another Vet...

Chris

It's the first time I'd ever been to that vet. None in my area dealt with small animals. I drove 35 minutes out there just so he wouldn't suffer anymore. It was a tough situation to be faced with.

I'm so sorry Jen, I would have been upset leaving him there. You did the right thing, you can remember his happier days now.

I am so sorry for your loss... I cannot believe they wouldn't let you be there!? I insisted holding down Windsor as he was put to sleep even though I was a complete state.

Some vets I have used will not let you be there while rats are being put to sleep if they use gas - I think it depends on their insurance and their own policies as to whether you're allowed.

If a rat is being put to sleep via injection you should be able to be present. The first injection should be to the stomach, and only once the animal is unconscious should an injection to the heart be given (if necessary). An injection to the heart on a conscious animal is horrible :(

My deepest condolences at the loss of your beloved Sirius.

And I would like to send a nasty letter to your vet, mostly for over-charging you. My vet has never charged for euthanizing pocket pets, and $83 would be the cost for euthanizing an 80 pound dog!

I'm so sorry for your lost. I've had to help several of my ratties over the rainbow bridge by taking them to the vet. I always tear up pretty bad, but the people at my vets office are so kind. They always offer to let me be with them, but I know I'd cry way harder if I was there, so I always decline and just sit in one of the rooms and sniffle, so they always bring me a puppy that's boarded there to cuddle with, haha.
Mine have always cost around $80 as well. Expensive little darlings, I wish they lived longer, they are one of the best pets...

*sighs* So I was feeling a little better.
But now I feel horrible, I went to go thaw everyone's food (I was mean and made them skip two days while sirius was suffering it didn't seem right to me) For the first time ever I had purchased Merlin a small rat. So here I felt bad feeding him a rat right after all this, I open up the package...and it's a colored rat (feeding colored rodents weirds me out) not only that...but it had Sirius' coloration...

HUGS

I just can't feed rats...since I have pretty much had a beloved pet rat in all the colors.

I think for some of us, it's different after we find out what amazing pets rats can be. In time the pain of losing him will fade, but you'll never forget him. My spayed girl Billiejo is going to the bridge soon too. I got her as an adult Dec 2006, so she's at least 29 months now. She has rear leg paralysis and a big tumor but still seems cheerful and LOVES her food. I hope she goes in her sleep. She was always the lickiest sweetest thing.
