Hello! My name is Vivian, and finally, after a decade and a half (at least) of longing, I finally got my first corn snake on Sunday! He (maybe) is a snow corn we estimate to be about 2 years old-- I got him (again, maybe-- he hasn't been sexed) from a rescue, so I haven't got any real history on him. He's about 30" long, but I haven't weighed him or measured carefully yet. Right now I'm letting him get used to his new home and trying-- trying *so* hard-- not to bother him too much. Which is difficult, because he is so charming! He's a little shy since I brought him home, but when I met him at the rescue where he'd been living for a bit he was very friendly and inquisitive, and I think soon he'll be just as much at home here.

Myself, I have just signed up to volunteer at the rescue. I've always loved snakes, and always wanted one, but with one thing and another (and four cats) never managed to obtain one. But the second I hit that snake-room on Sunday, all the pent-up ophidiophilia I've been nursing for years exploded, and clearly reptiles are going to be a much bigger part of my life now. I'm doing my research, learning a lot, and enjoying the forum! I tend to be more of a lurker than a poster, but I'm sure I'll have a few questions here and there that can't be answered just by searching. So, hello, all! I look forward to reaping the benefits of your expertise, and my yet-unnamed but utterly charming snakelet also thanks you in advance!

I am happy you got a rescue! Though I can not believe why anyone could give up a snake. I am about to go lurking around vet offices around my town for chance to rescue before placing an order for a new snake. Everyone here has been so helpful to me as I am a new owner and a long time admirer of corn snakes.

Hi there and Welcome to the forum :D happy to have you and your charming new addition. Are you thinking of names for it yet? Feel free to ask any questions you have, we are here to help each other. When he gets all settled in you will have to add some pics ;) we love pics. And just a word of caution, corns are addicting, so be prepared to have more than one lol

Welcome! So glad you finally got your corn! You will love being a corn parent. I see you are in MD. I am in VA. Did you know there is a big reptile show coming to the MD State Fairgrounds in Timonium next month? It is May 15-16. You can buy VIP tickets online for $10 each. It gets you into the show for two days plus gets you in an hour earlier on Saturday and free goodies! We are going, got the tickets yesterday! Would love to meet you there! And hey exclamations!!! are necessary when it comes to corns!!

From one Lurker to another, Welcome! I'm a new snake owner too and this site has been a lifesaver (form me and poor little Aztec too!). I can't wait to see pictures. Enjoy!

Hello & welcome! Great intro. Can't wait to see pics when he gets settled in & you can take some!

Thanks, all! I'm happy to be here-- communities like this are so good for learning the things you need to know. Today is going to be my new little friend's first feeding day with me, and already I know what to try if it doesn't work! I'm sure if he could he would thank you as much as I do.

I'm waiting to get to know him a little better before I name him. I tend to take a while about that-- my cats didn't get names for at least a week or two each either. And believe you me, I will take pictures! I'm sending my poor friends incessant bad cell-phone pictures already. I'm terribly infatuated with him.

I already told my husband that I will, inevitably, not be stopping with one snake. After all, I'm going to be volunteering at a rescue, and it's a certainty that I'll have to take at least ONE more home! However, we'll be moving across the country in a year or two, so I'm going to try to keep it down for now. And since I haven't got any interest in breeding, I'll probably only end up with a fairly small number anyway. I want to be able to see them!

Yes, I heard about the May 15th-16th show in Timonium, and I fully intend to go. I haven't bought tickets yet, because I'm not sure whether I'll be able to go both days yet, but I won't miss it! Out of curiosity, 4riscorn, do you happen to have heard anything about the show in Havre de Grace, MD, which seems to be about once a month? It's on the 8th of May, and I'll probably go there as well, since it's close. I could in fact make an outing of it, as my husband and I were married in a park near Havre de Grace last year and we've been wanting to go back there close to our anniversary. He's dealing pretty well with this Snake Thing, but it could only help if I threw in a little something for Us instead of just for me! I'm just glad he's not scared of them, even though he thinks they're kind of weird.

Anyway, thanks for the welcome!

I'm grinning as I read your post because I've only had my little guy for about three weeks and yesterday I went out and bought a second tank. It's all set up and ready for a new occupant. I hope to find one at this weekend's local show. It will be my first time there and I can hardly wait. I think I'll have to stop at two though because I don't have a lot of space.

P.S. I think my husband is a little afraid... and he thinks I'M wierd....

Heh-- I only found out after we'd gotten home with the snakelet and N. had held him both here and at the rescue that when I first picked him up, N was a little creeped out. He said the snake looked strange crawling on me. But he got over it quickly, and I didn't even guess. He still sort of chuckles when I pick the snake up and he has to get used to the way he moves again, but I am incredibly thankful that he puts up with my pets so gracefully! He already had to get used to the four cats I had when we met. And he definitely thinks I'm weird, but somehow perhaps that's part of my charm?

He does tell me repeatedly that he doesn't want a pet tarantula. Thing is, neither do I, and I've never brought it up. I guess he wants to head the idea off at the pass, just in case...

HA! Yes, but mine told me absolutely no snakes....A month ago I said absolutely no snakes (to my son). Then we got Aztec and he stole my heart.

I would draw the line at terantulas too. :nope:

Welcome! Fairly new here too. Don't forget to upload some pictures! I am doing that now. :) Never too late to stick your hand in and pull out some corns. :)

I had to make a corn snake screen saver and play it for a month before my husband started asking "what are all these snakes?" I also bought two corn snake books and left them lying about for a few more months before he started to look into the notion of snake owning.
