how soon after mating should i remove the male /seperate the snakes? i havent found an answer to this question in my research, but common sense tells me the breeding response would be higher if they werent always together , 1st time they met they bred instantly

I put the snakes together once a week after bringing them out of brumation in late winter. If they show no interest in 15-30 minutes, I separate them and try again a week later.

Once they begin breeding, I put them together every three days. They mate, generally as quickly as a minute or two after greeting each other to maybe 15-30 minutes later. After they are done mating, I feed the male in his own feeding container, if it is his day to be fed (about every nine days during breeding season, to coincide with his breeding schedule) and then put him back in his own viv. I let the female rest in the breeding bin (an empty bin in the rack, with no aspen or newspaper or anything) for an hour or two, then feed her in her feeding bin and return her to her own viv. I feed females about every six or nine days, depending on their weight gain goals before they become gravid.

thanks nancy i apriciate the help , yeah i always feed them seperately but theres no harm in housing them together temporarily for a couple weeks after the breeding right?

We had a VERY experienced breeder here lose two males last year that were being cohabbed for breeding season. One was _eaten_, the other was just found dead in the female's viv.

In my opinion, you can't be _certain_ that the snakes aren't going to harm each other unless you are looking right at them.

Damn thats a shame , and your right im gonna finish building his new viv asap n split em up you solidified my thoughts to seperate em thanks Nanci , my names Dominick im from Nyc i just joined a few weeks ago , what does your collection consist of

I have 48 snakes, including three kings and a rosy boa. The rest are cornsnakes. Plus 17 babies and 30 eggs. Some of the cornsnakes are on breeding loan.

I like bloodred and lavender and stripe, so most of my snakes have one or the other of those genes. In addition, I like the Miamis, Keys, Tesseras, Terrazzos and have representatives of those, too!

Wow feeding/cleaning day must be more like feeding/cleaning week lol that is great i love corns i inteded to start breeding years ago but i was still young and partying way too much and did alot of impulse purchasing and didnt focus my efforts so i had like 12 diff species , i also had 2 of my corns escape that i intended on starting a project with i had an anery and a butter motley that were stolen so that hindered the project as well,i had an amazon tree boa, a jungle carpet python, a tiger retic 3 red tail boas and 3 corns and 30 something tarantulas i wound up having to move and i sold mostly everything , now that im older and not partying anymore i just started getting back into it with some focus , i kept the one corn my amel mot female from my old collection and recently picked up a nice snow mot male n paired them up she seems to be gravid im pretty sure, and i got a green tree python as a gift hes very tame and i love him but im not sure if im going to keep him yet since i want to stay focused mainly on the corns do you have any clutches about to pip or current projects ?

There are several breeders, that I know, that house pairs together, in the spring only, until the female is obviously gravid. I tried this, this year. Personally, I like the other way much better(like Nanci). Plus I can track hook up and approximate lay dates ect....

This was my first year breeding, & I used one male with two females (the male was a breeder loan).
I paired the male with female 1 every Monday, for a couple days, then with female 2 every Wednesday for a couple days, & then fed everyone on the weekends. I never saw one hookup, or even signs of interest, but I have two beautiful clutches to show for it.

Welcome to the forum!

I have the snakes divided into groups so the same bunch get fed together on a certain scheduled day. That way I am only feeding maybe 15 on the very worst day. I have four clutches in the incubator, one of which is due to hatch any day. The rest will hatch between the end of August and the end of September, hopefully!

awesome nanci good luck at that rate your corns may take over the world loll, any opals coming in any of those clutches? i think my next corn may be an opal i love that morph

cool what are the parents? opal is one of my faves right now along with the palmetto and a couple others
