Meet our new family member - SCOUT!

He's beautiful and I want him! That's all I care about :).

I'm guessing BC and/or GSD mixed with a greyhound or other sight hound. That would put him in the Lurcher category.

You ever get tired of that beautiful animal, I'll be on the first plane to AZ to bring him home with me! *grins*

Congratulations on your new friend. He's an example of a mixed breed that's WAY prettier than most purebreds, plus you saved a life by adopting him from a shelter. Good job :).

BTW, I wouldn't choose Banfield or any other "chain" veterinary option. They really ARE only about making money, and they'll not only be high priced, they'll try to sell you things you don't need, AND they often tend to be less than compassionate.

For vaccinations, you can do most of them yourself, or visit low-cost vaccinations and/or spay and neuter clinics. There are also some much better pet insurance options out there than theirs. Visiting dog-specific websites and forums (Dogster.com comes to mind) will often be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck with the new guy. He really is an amazing dog.

And I STILL want him :).

WOW he's a beauty. I don't think the pics make him look old, he looks very young and I would bet he doubles in size. Except for color his face and ears look like our Bailey, a border collie mix. When we got him he weighed 17# and they said he would max at around 30#, he now weighs 55# and is not fat. The color of the hair has a Aussie look but not dense or coarse enough, from the aussies and healers I see around here.
Anyway I'm with 'irish eyes' I'ld take him home with me he is a beauty.

Congrats on adopting!

A beautiful dog for sure!

I for sure see a lot of Shepherd in him, but what type..I don't have a clue. Very short ears, though..so if your curious, you might try searching for shepherds with short ears. The funny thing about mutts is they ALL look different..even those designer dogs look different to me.

I also would not have with the banfield vet clinic. They include tests in that fee, that really aren't needed to be done as often as they recommend. They also charge more on some of the antibiotics, and treatments, than most vets. I normally recommend a good local vet, one that you can talk to, and get a long with. Most importantly, one your dog likes and one that likes & seems to genuinely care about your pet. I personally like vets, that don't make me feel dumb, that are willing to listen to me, and ones that are willing to do tests. Most bad vets won't do any tests.

Anyways, you have a beautiful companion!

LOL. No chance we'll get tired of him now... My wife's fallen in love... again! :) Thanks for the compliments on him.

Thanks for the input on Banfield. I guess we should have looked a bit further and dug deeper. I'm grateful that the staff we met here was very thorough and very willing to listen to my concerns and answer my questions. Perhaps I got lucky? I hope so now that we're already "in" with them.

Right now, Scout weighs in at 31.8#. The Vet said since we really don't know his background, that a good guess is that he'll probably fill in a bit (we think he looks skinny, but the vet likes the "leaner look") but not get much larger. I'm okay with it either way... he's already picking up on some stuff from us (who don't know how to train ANYTHING) and following through, so bigger or just the way he is, he's trainable and we're happy with that. :)

Congrats on adopting!

Thanks for your comments on Scout and for your input on Banfield. Unfortunately, as I mentioned above, we've already signed in... and - at least for now - they've done pretty good in my book (see above for a tad more detail).

I did share with my wife that although I LOVE him already, I am missing the fact that we didn't have him from a bitty puppy. He's already a BIG puppy. Guess what my wife said? Perhaps around Christmas, I can get myself (since Scout is "hers") a puppy too! LOL.

I like him. I've never had a dog of my own, but I grew up with cats. The gene for brindle or tortoiseshell with cats is only on the x axis, making all brindle cats female. I have one and she is my only little girl.

I see red heeler in him with those ears.

Thanks! While I personally do not like cats, I do understand and appreciate their beauty.

As for Scout. My wife has done some research... LOTS of research... because NOT knowing what he is frustrates her for some reason. LOL. She looked and looked and has come finally come to the conclusion that he's got a mix of G. Shepherd and Catahoula Leopard dog in him. She found pictures of dogs up for adoption that are practically identical to him... ears, brindle coloring, slim waistline and all - to the point where even I am practically convinced. I told her, however, that just because they look like him doesn't mean that they necessarily share that mix, but for her, at least it "settles it". LOL.

Well, if she really MUST know, (expensive) DNA testing is now available, which can supposedly (I've never used that option, but AKC breeders HAVE to, if they use their males to breed more than a certain amount of litters per year, just to prove that the particular dog was, indeed, the father to 27 litters or whatever) tell you what breeds make up your particular dog.

Dog knows what a DNA test would show your dog is mixed with. It could be a huge surprise--or just what everyone is thinking--collies, shepherds, sight hounds, etc.

I wouldn't care WHAT he is--he's beautiful and a nice dog. That would be good enough for me.

I'm with you. LOL. Don't get me wrong, she loves him bunches too... just so darned curious to see where he "came" from. :)

Today was a great day with him... he's practically potty trained already... although sometimes it takes him some time before he actually goes. LOL. This morning, I took him out... and sure enough, he went after we had walked halfway around the block - BUT, I forgot the little doggie bags! Soooooo, I had to go back to the house get them and then FIND the stuff (it was on some gravel) again. :) He must've been thinking... gee, get your brain in gear already!

I've been thinking about doing one of these DNA tests on Kenzie. I NEED to know what she is mixed with...I'm weird!

Scout is a good looking dog, no matter what breed he is. Nice find, Fred!

He is beautiful Fred! I would guess Border Collie and Malinios. Just for fun. :)

Thanks, Carol! Yeah... I've pretty much given up on "the search for truth" regarding him, but my wife... well... she's how she is!!! LOL. That's one of the reasons I love her. :)

Quite a few folks (I'm including some of my friends where I live) think Border Collie too. :)

Here's a couple photos of Scout. We've had him for little over a month now. He's put on some weight and looks much "healthier" now than when we first got him. :) They're both sleepy-heads. I'll try to take some better shots of them later. LOL.
