Motley Indentification

paplan

Steve
Hi everyone,
I need some help identifying this Motley.
I picked up about a week ago, I don't know who bred him as he came in on a shipment from the US. Some people here in the UK suggest he is a "normal, Classic" but i'm not so sure.
Apologies for the picture quality, but these are pretty much his colouration.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I am not so positive that it is a Normal. The coloration doesn't seem quite right. There really seems to be something going on with him/her. Could you please get some pictures of your snake in natural sunlight as this might help with indentification. Either way it is still a pretty unique looking Cornsnake.

sunkissed maybe??? i have not seen a hatchling sunkissed mot so its just an idea if people don't think its a normal

Not a Sunkissed Motley. I hatched out two last year and I have seen another hatched by Jeff Mohr this year and that is not a Sunkissed Motley but it definitely looks like it has something different going on.

Definitely not sunkissed. Color does seem "off" for a normal. But it's something that could go away with a few sheds down the road...

Regardless a very neat looking snake.

I'd be hanging on to it. That's a nice snake. I have no idea what it is but it looks like more than just a normal to me. I hatched a normal motley this year and it is very different looking than that snake.

Thanks for all your replies. I will try to get some pics of him in natural daylight. The weather isn't on my side at the moment (raining again!!)

Okay here are some more pics, this time outside in natural light, we had a break in the weather. pics arn't very good but you can see the colouration and pattern.

It's gorgeous! But I can see why there is some confusion. The major thing is the heavy banding around the saddles...nor very common in motleys, even the Okeetee phase motleys. The only time I've seen that heavy banding in a motley is when there was a bit of kingsnake or milksnake in the mix. I really hate to be the one to cry "hybrid", but that is the only real explanation I can come up with at this moment.

Ahh, thanks Susan. I didn't really want to cry Hybrid either, but that snake is so unusual looking that's the only thing I can think of.

Odd things about it besides the bands:
  • The characteristic "stripe" that runs down the side of the Motley isn't a smooth stripe. It has some odd thick places to it.
  • There are markings down below the side stripe (normal for non-mots) that Motleys don't have.
  • Saddle count looks pretty high, and also oddly square.

I was the first one to cry out hybrid on his thread on another site (and directed him here for other opinions)...
Susan, you have jungles right? Does this look a bit similar? Maybe not in colour but in pattern?

It seems way to bright to be a normal motley. When I first seen the pic I thought it has to be mixed with a king. Just my two cents.

damn, i could not put my finger on what looked different about it :(, thanks susan, its the boarders that are there and thick which i did not notice as being different.:rolleyes::headbang:

i have no experiance with hybrids so i will leave it to the experts ;)

I am kinda new, and am still learning all the morphs, but with the "thicker" black surrounding the coloration, could it be some type of an okeetee/motley morph? Sure is pretty though, congrats on your new snake.:D

I'd have to agree with Susan. My first thought was that it was some sort of hybrid. Not sure how to pinpoint it...possibly the combination of colors and the borders...to some extent the uniformity of the dorsal pattern and the separation with the side pattern. It's not one thing specifically...it just looks off to me. It is a beautiful snake though no matter what it is.
