My Egg Adventure!

Sacred_Nightmares

Only slightly crazy...
Hello everyone! First off I just want to say that this is my first ever breeding! I hatched a clutch before, but it was unexpected from a female a friend acquired and couldn't keep the eggs. Anyway! This is my first expected clutch and I've been so excited after 4 years of owning corns and reading how to successfully breed. This website has been one of the most helpful information sources out there, and I want to thank everyone for contributing! :D

So here is a little history (you can skip this, I just feel like ranting a bit more! lol). In 2009, I bought the male of this pair (Vlad) at a reptile show for $45. He was labeled as an Amel Blood, but I noticed a small white marking and some exceptional diffusion compared to all of his "siblings". I decided to take my chances that maybe he was some sort of "pied sided fire" which would be pretty fantastic, since the pied gene was a pretty new thing back then. Long story short, he is a hypo pied-sided blood and an alert and hungry one at that! So that's Vlad's story. And Nikki has a story of her own as well! A friend of mine used to breed TONS of corns. Like 20 clutches each season. He had a few pied blood clutches, and I noticed a kinked female. And my friend said I could just have her since he culls the kinked ones. Well, I'm sure you can guess the rest, she ate and ate and ate, never ever refusing a meal. And I can't even find that kink on her if I try for an hour. And now she's going to be a mom! Man time flies!

Here is a picture of Nikki:

Obviously an old picture, but I honestly haven't been able to get a new one showcasing her white markings.

And here is Vlad:

He has less white, but boy is he a character! Escaped twice, bite me 3 times because he has a voracious appetite, but loves to cuddle. Plus he loves the ladies ;)

Alright so those are the parents. When I put them together, Vlad got right to chasing her. I only put them together that one time, being new to breeding, if I could help it, I wanted a smaller clutch. One June 30th, Nikki laid her GORGEOUS clutch of 12 eggs! Oh man was I a ball of excitement that day! Coming home from work to see all these pearls I waited a month for!

And that brings us to today, day 51 of the eggs. Incubating in our guest room with a broken AC wall unit that keeps the room at 80-81 degrees no matter what the rest of the house is. Quite convenient! Here is a pic of mom with the eggs on 6/30/12 and a pic of the eggs i took just now.

I have 12 rubbermaid containers with little deli sauce cups for water all ready for when these little worms hatch! They should hatch right around Labor Day weekend, conveniently when I'll be out of town to go to the Orlando Repticon. Hopefully they'll be alright on their own!

Thanks for reading!! I will update as soon as anything happens at all! I'm also waiting on a second clutch with the same male and my dark red bloodred girl. But she has yet to lay eggs, so I won't get into that until I see some good eggs. :D Thanks again; any and all advice is always appreciated!!

I hope you get some pied babies!!

When I had to leave clutches unattended for a few days I put the egg bins, ajar, in a bin in my adult rack, with the big bin filled with damp moss, with small water bowls. But you're probably not going to be gone more than one night??

Yeah, just one night but two full days. It's just right there, smack on day 60. So anything can happen. But I'll probably do just that, set the egg container in a bigger container, just in case. n__n

I'm not sure I'd disturb them for one night. I mean, you'll see them that morning, and know if they are close or not. (By them either being dented or soft. If you feel them now, you'll know what they feel like when the shells start to thin). And then you'll see them the following night.

I'm incubating in the 80-82 range and my clutches have been hatching around 63 days. But they always hatch when you don't want them to- so while you're at the show is probably when they'll go. BUT they don't usually come blasting out of the eggs. They slit, and then sit 12-24 hours. So you might have a clue the day you leave.

More eggs!

This week, my second female corn snake, Wednesday, laid her eggs!! She had 11 eggs, no slugs. They're all white and with veins, so they should all be pretty healthy! :D These kids will be cooking until around October 25th is when they should be ready. Perfect timing for halloween to get some more bloodreds!! Mainly hoping for some dark ones, just like mom was!

Dad is Vlad, the hypo pied blood. And Moms parents were both pied sided bloods, So expected babies are:

50% Pied Bloodreds het hypo
50% Pied Hypo bloodreds

Maybe one baby will be super dark with big white markings! :grin01:

Here's Mom, first pic was a month ago, second pic was her as a baby.

She was the most gorgeous baby!!

And then here are her eggs!!

First baby is out!!

This morning, I woke up and checked on the eggs expecting nothing new. It's day 66, and I figured they could take a few more days if they wanted to. But NOPE! Not today! Found this first thing in the morning:

And just now, about 11:00pm EST, (s)he decided to come out of his egg. I found him hiding under the sphagmn moss.

And what a beauty (s)he is!! Well worth the wait! What gorgeous diffusion, even though it's too hard to tell if there is any pied white markings. I won't sex it until it sheds. Already separated him from the rest and I couldn't be happier at the moment! :D

And now the wait for baby #2 to emerge and the 10 other noses need to poke through the egg. :D :D :D

Thanks everyone! I'm so blown away by these babies! I keep checking on them every 30 minutes and they just sit there! Lol! I can't wait to go to work or to sleep so time will pass faster! Today so far baby#2 is out, and the other 10 eggs have all pipped and noses and tongues are everywhere!

I can see a tiny tiny speck of white on this one! It's not much, but it is a sign that other ones may have white as well.

Picture time!!! Here is a picture of a few babies all bundled together. The rest of the baby pictures I've posted on my Iherp profile, so if you want to view each one individually, you can! I got 4 girls with some nice white one them, #2 (my keeper!), #5, #9, and #11. I wish I could keep all of them! They're so pretty and have such great diffusion. And they ALL ate their first meal! These kids have been so nice to me thus far.... maybe I should start preparing for an escape or something. Lol!!

Not to rain on your happy moment, but it sure would be upfront of you to disclose in the "babies for sale" Iherp pictures that the mother is kinked. It is likely non genetic (incubation, etc.), but full disclosure is crucial. Just saying what I bet a lot of people are thinking.
