My Rodant Production shed...

the russian hamsters have never bitten me yet, not even tried to.

The females are quite a bit more agro than the males! It's probably better for socializing them that you have the male's enclosure set up first. Introducing a male to a female's territory can turn into quite a spat. You'll probably have better luck doing it the other way around. Good luck, they sure are cute.

I had a colony of dwarf hamsters for their ability to get reluctant babies to feed.
I can't say it didn't work, as the baby snakes I had seemed to have a very good survival rate and I've never brained or lizard scented anything.
Tuna water and dwarf hamster babies were my limits.

However, I tired of it quickly, as they never tamed down through selective breeding or handling.

They seem to NOT imprint well, will not cooperate with selective breeding, and aren't smart enough to remember you, at least that's what I remember from 2 or 3 years of trying.
Also, rats and mice take a quick bite and move off.
Dwarf hamsters seem to latch on and chew. They really hurt worse than any corn, king, or milk I've ever been tagged by, or any rat that caught me by surprise.

the rat bite i mentioned earlier in this thread:
the one female rat got defensive over her young though and bit me on the one joint in my finger and i could hear the cartilage crunch in it, it bled A LOT as well, and the side of my finger below that is numb so i presume she managed to cut a nerve as well!!!

latched on and really swung about on my finger and would not get off.

the Dwarf hamster comes out of its hide every time i walk into the shed and if i put my hand in he comes and sits on it, so he seems friendly enough. Some female i handled in a petshop only tried a gentle nibble and soon stopped that just whilst handling them in a shop so perhaps the UK has friendlier dwarf hamsters....

i think Lucas may be a bit too sweet to feed off, he will be the breeding male but he is a bit cute.

LOL, i think you are right, however i do now have 3 litters of rat fuzzies!!! 2 of them look like very large litters!!!

the end of my finger is still numb to some extent!!

Cages are a little cramped and dirty for my taste, but my mice are bred for pets as well as feeders, so they receive a different level of care than most feeder colonies.

I swear, it is impossible to find agouti mice in the US. Do you know anyone in the UK who would ship that far? I'd love to get some in my colony. My colony is made up entirely of B&W mots and sandy mots. They're pretty, but self-agoutis have always been my favorite. :)

little cramped and dirty for my taste

This is 2 days after i cleaned them out... How often do you want to me to clean them out???

what do you mean by
???

Those photos were taken just before i thinned down the numbers in the boxes hence some are slightly over crowded.

Thanks

Well, if there were less mice in the space, the cages wouldn't get so dirty so fast. I spot clean my cages every day, and I change the bedding every 1-2 weeks, depending on when it's needed.

Animals require care. If you can't keep up with them, maybe ask a friend if they'd be willing to take some.

Like I said, my mice sell as pets too, so they receive a different level of care than most feeder colonies. I like to keep them very clean and comfortable because I had them long before I had snakes. I learned to take care of them as beloved pets (and show animals, believe it or not) before I learned to take care of them as snake chow.

Don't get offended by my observations. You posted pictures and I offered my opinion on said pictures.

Adam.

There are less mice in most cages, 1:4 is the ratio of adults and as soon as the mice are weaned they are put into their own boxes. if there are too many in any one cage then they get culled early.

Animals require care
Do you want to try and be any more condescending... ;)

My Rodents are sold to many of the local pet shops as well and they have all commented on what excellent condition they are in and how tame and handleable they are...

Good for you. I'm happy for ya. I'm just saying, that my mice live in cleaner and larger conditions. Nothing wrong with keeping your animals happy.

I have HUNDREDS of mice occupying a very small space.......
In a baggie in my freezer.......

Hah hah hah! :noevil:

Torsten, I see nothing wrong with the count of mice in bins. They all look to be plump little guys with beautiful, healthy coats...and they wouldn't look that nice if they were overcrowded and suffering. The only thing I will say is be extremely careful with those electric heaters. There's been a number of cases recently here in my state where people were using those and they caused serious house fires...and I know two people who lost several thousand dollars worth of snakes when theirs malfunctioned and cooked them in the reptile room.

Torsten, your set up looks great. Your mice look healthy. Don’t pay any attention to 3H. He is well know for trying to pick fights with everyone he meets. He is just jerking your chain.

it looks good to me a lot of time and effort has been put in there and they all look healthy as well. Mine often get overcrowded before I can wean the babies off but once they are weaned its back to normal. My mice are in my utility room and it does get pretty cold in there at the moment at night but they all seem ok they have plenty of bedding and even get a bit of hay at the moment which they snuggle up in.
