Off Topic: Look what I hatched! No, not snakes!

Ok I can't help but share these pictures. No matter how many I hatch, I still get giddy with excitement at watching them come into this world, and all observing all their antics. Lots of people don't think so, but Chickens make wonderful pets. I have some that come when I call their individual names, fly up to hang out on my shoulder while I wander around like a parrot, beg to be picked up and cuddled, and jump onto my lap as soon as I sit down.
Anyway, I breed chickens for exhibition. Yes, before you ask, there are poultry shows. Chickens don't cost as much as snakes, but you can still get over $100 for a good bird. Anyway, here we have pics of some of the chicks that hatched today. There are 10 seramas (the worlds smallest chicken), 9 bantam frizzle cochins (a small breed with feathered feet and whos feathers curl backwards as if they walked backwards through heavy wind) and one bantam barred rock (they have black and white stripes).

And for anyone interested, this is what they'll look like when they're older:

Oh cool chickens! I love the fluffy fru fru one.
You will probably get mad at me for asking this but does your corn snake ever get an extra snack? I have seen a lot of feeding shots of corns eating baby chicks... So it would be kind of like the people who keep king snakes to cull the corn snakes that don't thrive..

Nope, Cornelius doesn't get chicks. Maybe he'll get some in the future (not any that I hatch, though) once he's big enough, but right now He probably couldn't even fit one of the smallest chicks heads in his mouth. :p

I can understand and accept the different colors and feather types of chickens (I personally like the Polish kind with the "mop" of feathers on their heads) and other birds (like pigeons and canaries), but the Seramas and similar types just look so mutated that they appear to have some type of disease process going on. Just my opinion.

I love chickens! I have raised them on several different occasions! I don't remember the specific types that I had (I just had them as pets and for the eggs). But they were lovely!
Very cute batch of chicks - keep sharing pictures!

Susan - It's probably because of their extreme type, and the fact that they tend to be bred so vigorously and often that their feathers are in condition. I think they tend to look unhealthy because of their often less than neat appearance. I know what you mean though.

Thanks guys! I'm planning on selling these guys ($10 each or more) either at the show I'm going to this weekend, or a swap meet I'm going to next weekend, to make money for a new trio I'm buying. :)

Beautiful adults! I don't know how I'd handle the noise of a rooster, however. My Chinese co - workers actually tried to pawn one off on me. He was quite a bit of fun to play with out back of the restaurant, but my roommates were NOT up for any early morning wake up calls. I cruelly named him General Tso, and played with him until my coworkers took him back home.

Lol that's funny! All our roosters are bantams (about one third the size of a normal chicken) and they aren't very loud at all, in fact my d'Uccle rooster, Rambo, sounds like a squeeky toy when he crows. It's the funniest thing ever. I may have to upload a video of it.

Oh please do! My sister used to keep bantams, and her english game rooster (Horatio, because he only had one eye) had a really funny crow!

LOL isn't that just the lamest excuse for a "manly" sound ever? It's especially funny because he thinks he's the biggest baddest thing out there. He gets into crowing wars with my bantam barred rock rooster, who isn't much louder, but is much deeper and actually sounds like a crow. And then you can hear Rambo squeeking back in the distance. They're very entertaining. :p
