Progression thread: Tango the Cayenne Fire

I've hatched a few cayennes in my day. That one's gonna be fire engine red, if I had to wager! Fantastic pickup.

Don said he was going to be a hold back and then realized he'd held two males by mistake! I'm lucky to have him! I plan to eventually do a couple of projects with his amazing genes. :D

Tango has officially doubled in weight since he arrived in early August, tipping the scales at 13g. My growing boy is going into shed for the 2nd time with us. He's 3 months old today!

The weather wasn't too cool, so I took Tango out for some natural lighting shots. Unfortunately, the boyfriend was napping and was unable to assist, so I didn't get the best photos.

"Outside? I want to go to there..." (Cheers to anyone catching the 30 Rock reference.)

His reds really pop outside.

I noticed after this shed that some of the white edges on his sides are staying awfully bright white, and one spot almost seems bigger than before. Possible low expression pied-sided?

Particularly this spot:

Kinda blurry photo of his other side...lighting wasn't very good and he was not about to hold still. :)

Got a message back from Don after asking about the white (as well as confirming that he is indeed from the South African line):
Yes, both of the parents of your Cayenne Fire are from South Africa. Also, I noted the white on the sides when I was packing your order, and I won't be shy about telling you that you very nearly didn't end up with that one, but the only other one in stock at that time was much more orange than this one. Not that they stay orange, but the faster they get red, the redder adults they'll be. The one you got should be a screamer. I got one last year from these parents that had about four times this much lateral white. I still don't know what it means, but obviously, I'm not stating that they are p/s, though I have suspicions they are one of the p/s types?? That's unofficial, of course.

Kinda neat I guess. :) I'm still not going to call him p/s, but he's definitely a bit unusual.

All I can say is, wow. That is so neat and ot course Tango is looking awesome!

He must have still needed to poo the last time I weighed him, so he is NOW 13g and 15 inches long. For the first time last night he seemed to actually beg for more food rather than just scurrying off into a dark hide. I'd walk up and he'd peek out, pull back, peek out again, pull back...

He constricted his mouse for the first time this morning! I had to run and grab my phone downstairs to get a pic. I had him chase the mouse a little way before stopping and he took a second to line up his strike, then BAM perfect hit (nearly took the whole head in his mouth all at once!) and into a perfect coil. That's my boy!

We're gonna switch him to 3g rabbit reptilinks once I run out of pinkies. He's such a good eater, I doubt he'll have any issues switching. He appears to be going into blue as well, though that has yet to curb his appetite.

I'm a newbie and just got my first corn about a week ago! I was wondering if I could ask what you are referring to when you say "he appears to be going into blue"? Heck I honestly do not even know what kind of corn I have but she's beautiful and I love her so that's all that matters right!! Yours is absolutely GORGEOUS!! I love the coloring, and the white sides really make the red POP!!

"Going blue" refers to the bluish coloration you sometimes see when a snake is preparing to shed, particularly visible on black markings and dark eyes. It's not as easy to spot in amels sometimes, since they lack black pigment. You can see Tango's faded coloration in this post...here he is heavy "in blue."

Can you start a thread about his experience with the links? I'm interested to hear how that goes!

I will soon! I am still going through the last of my day-old pinks. He's on two per feed now since they're so tiny, so only a couple more weeks. He's been an excellent eater, so I have no doubt he'll switch over easily. I would like to do some trials with non-feeders in the future if I can access some locally.

Last night after noticing Tango was following my finger along the edge of his feeding bin, I decided to demonstrate for the boyfriend how baby corn bites don't hurt. Before putting him back in his tub I purposely presented my still-pinky-scented finger, which he immediately struck and attempted to devour. He seemed a bit loath to let go but finally did. I think reptilinks will be nooooo problem.

He's up to 17g now and if I had to guess I'd say he's close to 17 in. as well. What I thought was the first signs of shed was probably just weird lighting, as he hasn't dulled any further. He should be due any time now though, considering how much he's grown since the last shed. He's on a 5 day feeding schedule now down from 4, and we'll probably continue that with the new 3g links. It'll kinda depend on his poops.

Little goober finally shed tonight. I had been holding off feeding since he was refusing to poop. I'll take pics for the shed thread in a couple days once he's done digesting.

Current length is 17.5 inches, so he's gained about 2.5 in the last month. Not as impressive as Slinky's growth, but I'll take it lol.

Oops, I never posted photos!

I had especially good lighting here somehow. He looks so red already!

Especially noteworthy is the bits of red factor showing through on his face, which is gradually turning reddish-orange.

Quite a difference from when he first arrived! This is 3 sheds ago:

Thanks guys! I'm so glad I got him young so I could witness the color changes. I can't wait for the next shed!

So last night as the boyfriend and I wrapped Christmas presents in the bedroom away from the cats, we noticed a certain little shoelace sleeping somewhat out in the open. I even opened the lid to peek at him, figuring he would scurry off, but he just kind of looked up and flicked his tongue at me like, "Is foods time yet? No? Ok." and laid his head back down. He stayed there the entire time we wrapped gifts.

Of course, it WAS food time later that evening. Silly goober has finally figured out he can easily climb out of his tub...but he happily followed the mouse back in. Well...mostly anyway!

At 22g he's nearly ready for peach fuzzies, but I'm still waiting for Reptilinks to get back to me about my order, so he's stuck with PetSmart pinkies which are very small. It was unfortunately cancelled due to short supply, so I WILL get some soon hopefully. He always seems so excited about the 2nd mouse though, and in his exuberance he missed his strike for the first time. It was hilarious; he sort of sat there with his mouth hanging open for a second, as if he was thinking, "Wait...what just happened??"

Another happy note: the boyfriend's family seems to be surprisingly welcoming of our little scale baby. Christmas cards have been arriving addressed to the two of us, Oscar (our kitty), AND Tango. :) His mom even asked for a photo of her holding him to send to his aunt.
