Step 1 - go to www.cornutiopia.com and order Cornsnakes, The Comprehensive Owners Guide by Kathy Love.

Step 2 - Read the book

Step 3 - Read it again.

And before you do anything please have a good reptile vet handy, and money saved in case an emergency comes up.

Also make sure that you have the room to keep up to 20 babies if they don't sell.

theres no where in that link that says ANYTHING about breeding... what am i supposed to look at??? i have read the book... 3 times haha. ill make room for all the babies kuz im planning on keeping MOST of them. and the vet part is easy to do... soooo... how exactly do i breed???

The book pretty much tells you everything you need to do to breed. I can't imagine there are many gaps but we'll do our best to clarify anything that seems unclear. Which bits are the problem for you?

You probably won't have much luck getting them to breed at this time of year, so you will have plenty of time to prepare for breeding them next spring. Kathy's book is a great guide to get you started. There is a lot to know and consider, so you really should get a good book on it to help you started. Good luck! :)

I second that, lots of information on breeding, incubating, hatchlings, and problems that could arise. As for room for babies, just have a plan in case they don't sell.

It is always exciting when you first start breeding! You still have a half year to prepare - but the preparation is just as important as the actual breeding.

I did try to put everything into the book that I could think of to help you prepare and cycle the adults, breed, incubate eggs, raise babies, etc. But if you have specific questions that you couldn't find any answers to, just fire away. I am sure we will all try to answer anything that was missing, or wasn't clear.

Prepare for lots of fun - and a bit of work, too, lol

I agree, Kathy's book is wonderful, also get probes and find someone experienced to teach you to use them or watch the videos on Kathy's site a whole lot before trying so you can be 100% sure they are the genders sold as. Many people make mistakes and you want to know for sure you have a breeding pair and not two of one gender.

Next you want to get about 100 Pinks into the freezer, then setup a hatchling rack or something similar to house the hatchlings. Be sure to have bins and water dishes for at least 20 hatchlings as stated by others. Then, make sure you are feeding the adults properly and get a breeding bin for when you put the two together to breed.

Once you have all that setup just wait til March or the first shed from the female after march and start introducing them for a while every 3 days, resting as needed for feeding if they will eat. Sometimes breeders stop eating so they can focus on breeding.

Then after a couple of confirmed breedings (best way to confirm is to see it happen) stop introducing them and feed the female well until she has her prelay shed. Once she sheds give her a moist hide for a laybox. After she lays make sure she gets lots of water and offer small food items to entice her to eat, I fed my girl every 5 days the first 3 feeds giving hoppers then went back to every 7 days giving adults. Watch your female for eating a pooping propperly, and for the chance she may double clutch. She will need extra care if she doubles.

Also watch for her being eggbound, this is where the vet and lots of money comes in handy. An emergency like that is terrifying and killer on the wallet.

Breeding corns or any animal is not something you can just buy a pair of animals and let them at it and reap the rewards (new pets bred by you, money, whatever). It is very serious.

You can order that same book at Abebooks.com for 1 dollar plus shipping. i just orderd mine and it was a total of 7bucks.

LOL,

yeah I bet!! for $1.00??? LOL wow...well, mine cost me more than that....but mine is autographed!! ;).

Yeah, the autograph alone was worth what I paid for the book, I got it straight from Kathy. I adore having books about animals that are signed by the authors. Means a lot to me. Especially when I actually kind of know them.

Haha! Yes, kind of like the beautiful little corns going for $8 at the shows. Seems like somebody (whether us or somebody else) puts a lot of "blood, sweat, and tears" into a project, and then it sells for pennies (or a dollar or two). Seems such a shame to see so much work valued for so little...but such is life in this horrible economy, I guess!

Seems especially bad when I have to pay way more than that to buy the copies that I resell, lol! Sure wish I got a royalty on all of the copies sold!

Its a shame but I had to take advantage of the opportunity! I want to breed and your book "Kathy" is the one I have been hearing about for years! It is also a shame when the market is so terrible that Snakes are selling for such low prices, I've heard a lot of "non feeders" going for SUPER cheap at tables. shame.

GREAT BOOK non the less!

kathy,

never fear! i intend on buying a 2nd copy just to have a spare. the one copy i do have never leaves my side....hell, i sleep with it more than i sleep with my girlfriend...but thats for another forum somewhere in cyberland.

I'm trying to help sales by getting all the rookies who ask me questions to buy it. Think I've sold 3 at work in the past month, lol.

Sure - just stop by and say "hi" to him. He is also going to be doing a couple of talks during the show - I think on photography, and on snake sexing.
