Research 4 Story

I get ideas from every vampire movie I've ever seen. I LOVE "Moonlight" although I would definitely do things differently than that writer. I LOVE "Dark Shadows" although it had the kookiness of the era in which it was made. ( I was born right after the 60's so somehow the hippie culture seems like home to me. Although I'll never be a humaniac vegetarian!) I haven't READ Anne Rice ( definitely MEAN to someday ) but I liked "Interview with a Vampire" ( Antonio Bandaris really needs to do a vampire movie! He has the eyebrows for evil! I've also seen him play a bad guy once or twice and he's PHENOMONAL! Maybe I can fix that. ) and I ADORED "Queen of the Damned".
And I really liked the "Underworld" movies although between you and me, I think it was just an excuse for the special effects guys to show off! Great costumes though! Ya gotta have great costumes for a vampire flick!

There is this Asian, really pathetic, badly dubbed, B-rated vampire flick called "Mr. Vampire" that's so bad its good. It shows the Asian example of the 'hopping vampires' and its very good for a laugh but please don't even TRY to take it seriously! I thought the Asian magic in was quite fascinating.

Anyway, just my thoughts on the genre.

But then again, the scariest, creepiest, vampire novel I've read is hands down Salem's Lot.

I agree. I love Stephen King, and read his books over and over. Salem's Lot is an exception- it is too creepy and disturbing and terrifying to ever pick up again!!

The one thing I'm not sure I like about Salem's Lot is the idea that you can become a vampire just from being bitten by one. I suppose it's not brought up very often because most victims do not live through a vampire encounter, but I like the idea of something else needing to happen in order for the transformation to occur.

ALTHOUGH in Salem's Lot there is a difference between the mindless zombie like vampires (the truly scary feral ones) and the head honcho guy. King DOES allude to something different needing to happen to be "true evil", but never completely explains what that is.. I'm talking about the priest. Nanci, do you remember what happened there? I think he was turned into a "real" vampire, like the head vampire of the story but it wasn't completely explained.

I hope I get the guts to read Salem's Lot again.. I guess I'm a weirdo, I like being scared.

Oh, and thanks for the suggestions. I liked Underworld too, as well as Night watch mainly for their vampire content. ;D
Armand has a much larger role in the other books, although not the oldest as he says, he's pretty cool. The movies leave.. something to be desired, although I'm guilty of watching all of them.

Good luck!
Oh, and I could do some Asian vampire research for you. Are you talking about Chinese, Japanese, Indian? I'm sure they all have slightly different takes.

Chinese PLEASE! I need more info on the 'hopping vampires'! Something more reliable than a cheesy Asian movie that just goes downhill the more it continues.

If you remember in Bram Stoker's "Dracula", one could be bitten without actually being turned and, if the victim was caught early enough, the change could be stopped. I like that idea!

I REALLY liked Moonlight - sure am sorry they canceled it so soon! I also liked Forever Knight quite a lot - Moonlight reminded me a lot of that series.

When I was a kid, I was crazy for Dark Shadows. It was really pretty silly, but I just soaked up the atmosphere of the whole thing. There weren't so many choices back then!

I never saw any Asian vampires - but it sounds a little too campy to me - maybe like Dark Shadows?

One of my favorite vampire books was one I can't even remember the name of. But it was about a vampire who was currently a professor (at the beginning of the book) and ran a sleep study to get his dinner. He ended up going to a psychiatrist, who found out his secret. He was captured by some young people who found out what he was and wanted to have a "pet" vampire for entertainment.

The vampires in the world of that book would go into hibernation when things got too difficult, or relationships became untenable. Then when they (vampires) woke up, they had only fleeting memories of past lives, and started anew. It had some very interesting premises for the world of vampires. Does anyone know which book I am referring to?
