What has he actually done to deserve the 2009 Nobel Prize For Peace?

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article6868905.ece

But Lech Walesa, the dissident turned Polish President, who won the Peace Prize in 1983, spoke for many, declaring: “So soon? Too early. He has no contribution so far.”
What Lech said.
Because I'm speechless.

And...
But Bobby Muller, who won the Nobel Prize as co-founder of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, told The Times: "I don't have the highest regard for the thinking or process of the Nobel committee. Maybe Norway should give it to Sweden so they can more properly handle the Peace Prize along with all the other Nobel prizes."
What Mr. Muller said.

EDIT / NOTE : I will let the 61 comments, so far, on the link....speak for the supernumerary thoughts going on in my mind at the moment; I do not see myself as a major participant in the melee that will likely shortly ensue.

Eric??? THats not your face?? ;)

I'm so not going to waste precious energy on another dramatic struggle amongst the ego tripping human apes as they argue back and forth if he deserves the prize or not. BUt I am sure others here will, so, have fun amongst yourselves with this one ;)

I have to agree, that I haven't a CLUE as to what he has done to win such honorable recognition. It makes me have less respect for those who give such an honor to people.

I heard about that today and was appalled. Now, mind you I actually voted for Obama (better than the alternative IMO), but when I heard about him receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, my jaw hit the floor. He hasn't done anything yet! At this rate, I'm not sure he actually will do anything.

Mind you, I am not looking to ensue in a political debate either... Political discussions are off limits to me. I don't really follow politics closely enough to contribute anything of substance to a debate anyway, but this irked me.

I concur with Jynx.

I am not "anti-obama"

but what exactly did he do to get this? He's only been in office for, what, 9 months? I think they are counting their chickens before they've hatched (or even layed for that matter)

I too voted for Obama McCain is a scary man and Palin...nuff said, but no he does not deserve a Nobel Peace Prize afterall where's the peace? LOL what a freaking waste:(

Oh... migawd...
What HAS he done? I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking this. Because this really is ridiculous. Sure, he's the first "ethnic" president, but what has he done other than that?

What is really appalling, is that he was nominated after having been in office for an astonishing 12 days. What could he have possibly done (besides make promises) in 12 days?

yeah... that sure took down the legitamacy of the Prize down a peg or 10. those must have been the best 12 days ever!

The question isn't what he did or did not do...the question is, "What could anyone in the world could have done in 12 days in his position to earn such an award that USED to have meaning to it." Let's face it, though, the Nobel for the non-science categories hasn't been given on true merit in many, many years. Even the science ones have been reduced, but they have not sunk that low yet. Thankfully.

Remember how it was such an amazing thing that Watson and Crick got their award so soon after publishing such an important paper? They deserved it, but the speed was still a first in many ways even though everyone KNEW the discoverer of the structure of DNA would win it. Now, you can win it on campaign promises and lies BEFORE even accomplishing anything.....lol.

Your all looking at this from the wrong angle......
I'm thinking how weak the other candidates must have been in 2009...
Stands to reason if Obama gets it for nothing......

You know, this event encouraged me to read, yes beyond obnoxious editorializing, some very interesting things. I found this really cool site, much much more interesting than the giving of this prize, where I even read the original text of Alfred B. Nobel's will. It has lots of stats and very interesting little stories.

The site : http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/nobelprize_facts.html

The text of the will : http://nobelprize.org/alfred_nobel/will/testamente.html
Oops, you'll have to click "English", sorry. :D

Perhaps he redecorated the white house with a more peaceful color palette :shrugs:
