I'm trying to figure out how to explain this without making it sound like I think being vegetarian is 'healthier'. I guess hmm ok let me try to explain.

There are some statistical benefits (I have listed several of them in previous posts) to being a vegetarian in the sense that studies have shown that for example "Vegetarians have a significantly lower rate of cancer than the general population.(p 209)" This is attributed to a higher intake of fruits/vegetables/fiber with lower intakes of saturated fats. Now of course a vegetarian who fries everything and eats few fruits/vegs and instead eats a lot of processed food, and white bread will not have these lower rates, where as an omnivore who eats very healthfully is likely to have lower rates of cancer than the general population as well.

So technically (statistically speaking) there are benefits, *but* I have never been told or made to believe or read in any of my nutrion classes/books, etc that an omnivore diet could not have the same benefits if their fruit/veggie/fiber/saturated fat consumption was similar to the vegetarians.

So while it is technically true that they have a lower rate of cancer, that isn't because eating meat causes cancer, it is because the general population does not eat enough fruits/veg/fiber, and they eat to many saturated fats. So that is why for me, I come down to either of the diets if implemented properly can and are healthy.

It sounds like a good explanation to me. And it makes perfect sense. It seems to me that an omnivore could enjoy those healthy benefits just as easily as a vegan or vegetarian, by simply balancing their nutrition more properly. I don't dweny for a minute that the majority of omnivores eat far more meat than the body needs. A finer balance would very likely be very beneficial to everyone.

Like I said, I fully believe that balance is the key. More important than your food source is your food quality. Regardless of which diet you choose to follow, if you eat crap food and live an unhealthy lifestyle...you're screwed. And the simple act of including meat and dairy products in your diet isn't going to condemn you to a life of obesity, heart disease and colon cancer, no matter how many vegan zealots with hidden agendas try to convince you otherwise...
