Steve Irwin Dies at age 44, A sad day in the herping world..

This is almost not worth addressing, but there's a few things I can't let go.

Vinman, if you're so concerned, I'd be delighted to hear how many letters you wrote to Steve Irwin, The Australia Zoo, or the Discovery Network in the last 14 years to express your strife? I'm guessing you didn't pick up a pen and paper once.
Instead, you want to step on and tarnish the accomplishments and legacy of a man after he passed. It takes an awful lot of gall to come along and speak of someone the way you have. His style wasn't your taste. That's fine. Say so and move on. Your comments were insensitive, unfounded and uncalled for.
We must all be overlooking the fact that you were right there on the set as he filmed each of his television shows. Afterall, if the network would never show him injuring an animal on TV, then you must have been there in person looking over his shoulder as it happened in order to know such a fact. You shouldn't make unfounded declarations and pass them off as fact. The truth of the matter is that you don't know anything at all beyond what you saw on the television period.

I don't think he ever did anything for ratings the way it was also suggested in this thread. Think about everything you've ever heard or seen Steve Irwin do/say and the way he has always acted. Does anything about that man suggest that he would walk a tight rope for network executives to get ratings if it meant putting animals at risk? Did you ever see any of the episodes where he was almost moved to tears over some of the things he saw? I bet he squeezed those out for ratings too.

The fact is that Steve Irwin has done more for animal conservation, education, and awareness in his last 14 years in the spotlight than most people with related occupations will do in their entire lifetime.

I certainly hope his wife and kids never have to read senseless ridicules like this. There's a time, a place, and a way to address such issues. I fail to see how comments like "I really don't feel sorry that he died." accomplish anything.

Going to someone's memorial service and standing up in front of everyone and saying how you don't care if the man died, you thought he was an idiot, is beyond deplorable. That is lack of character, lack of empathy, and great lack of taste. Considering this is as close to a memorial service as this forum is going to get, can't you just let people express their grief and memorialize in peace?

Whether or not Steve Irwin's presentation was to my taste, there is no denying the man had passion for what he did, day in and day out. That was genuine and IMO deserves respect. RIP Steve, you had a life well lived.

It blows my mind that people would diss the guy...really. And is it just me or are there two threads on Steve at the moment?

Anyway, I didn't watch his shows much, and when I first heard of him, I thought he was just some showboating type--just a wacky TV personality and a fool. My opinion changed pretty quickly, maybe starting with an interview he gave on TV once (Letterman?) in which he told the story of how he met his wife. Yeah, the guy was definitely wacky, but in a good way. :) Funny dude. And ultimately, he did so many great things for animals and for people. Who knows how many people out there right now have a pet they never would have had if it weren't for Steve? Who knows how many of them go to zoos and vote to save animals' habitats because someone raised awareness? Who knows how many species and individual animals owe that man a huge debt? Right now, there's some snake or lizard out there, slithering or crawling along, who would have been dead if it weren't for Steve Irwin.

I watched his bios on Animal Planet, when they aired them back to back for ages. Talk about an obsession with animals, even as a kid. Yeesh. He was born the way he was. Perhaps, as a baby, he reached for the animals on the wallpaper in his room. :)

I was totally shocked when I found out. It was late, and I thought I'd pop onto Yahoo for a quick news check between surfs, and I just stopped cold and used some 4-letter words. Wow, none of us saw that coming. One day he's here, and the next...it just blew me away.

So here I am, having seen little of his shows, feeling down over the guy. He was a special man indeed. And clearly one who was much loved.

A day or two before that news item was the piece on the Queen not understanding the public grief over Diana's death. And now we have a new public grief, almost like someone was trying to make a point. *shrugs* We may never have met the guy, but we can mourn his death for all the great things he did and what he could have done had he lived to a ripe old age, and we can sympathize with his family.

Truly, a great loss. :(

:-offtopic Mark O'Shea jeff Corwin. Who are they?

It now feels like theres a void. There will be people trying to be like him but there will never be anyone as dedicated as he was. My next reptile I get will be called Steve-O (male) or Terri (female).

He never intended to stress an animal. I remember a episode where he picked up a gravid lizard but put it down again and looked for a non-gravid lizard because he didn't want to harm the eggs.

I read he was just swiming over it and it and it flicked its tail up and stabbed him is his heart.

And how dare you say that you repulsive being! People all over the world admired him (myself included) Then you come and say two things you didnt like about him.

Shrap,

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to zwyatt again.

well said, Zach.

regards,
jazz

I just can't believe how very sad I am, and how much his death has affected me. I never really thought about how I felt about him before his death, but this has really impacted me as I'm sure it has many others.

Let's do a little comparison....shall we?

Did Steve Irwin stress a few animals on his shows? Probably yes....

But he also taught millions of people to love and appreciate reptiles and see the beauty in them that he did. He sparked an interest in nature that spanned the world and probably prevented thousands of snakes from being beaten to death with shovels or intentionally hit by cars. He EDUCATED us.

He gave MILLIONS of dollars he earned to conservation efforts and to running a wildlife park that is essentially a country club for crocs.

As a kid, he and his dad would capture crocs that posed a threat to people, not only to keep people safe but to keep the crocs from being shot.

Did he absolutely adore reptiles and know that turkey gizzards are not snake food? YES!!

So...stressing a snake makes him a horrible person but what about all the animals he saved?

I couldn't agree more!!!
to add from watching his show it started to lead me to the fact that snakes were really cool. I liked them before but he showed me the cool things with them.(duh i don't get like the spitting vipers and them but they're all cool!

Also you can't say he harassed the sting ray if you really know how much he loved animals and how much money he put towards them he wouldn't of harassed it in any way.

Shrap,

Can't help you with mark O'Shea but jeff corwin is another one of those reptile guys that travel the world he usually had show before irwins.

Mark O'Shea has an occasional TV show as well - mainly known to UK people I suspect. Well-known in professional herp circles over here, but maybe not so much contact with hobbyists.

It is for real, here are two threads that he talks about it in.

First is the thread he started trying to get others to do this.
http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18393

Second is a poll that was started after his thread original thread.
http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19768

That should shed some light on what Vinman is all about.
