The heartache of breeding candoia...

Tula_Montage

It's Jager time!
I came home to the stench of rotting flesh tonight. These must have been born between Friday and today, as I last checked on her Friday night. I'm guessing Friday as they were stiff as a board and decomposing.

I can only assume at least 4 were stillborns. And one perhaps lived enough to get out of it's egg sac, but died shortly afterwards.

I have cried bucket loads over these wee souls. They are perfectly formed, beautifully coloured and patterned and big relative to the species. This is also a big litter for carinata, the worlds smallest boa. RIP babies, you just were not meant to make it.

Poor tiny babies... I'm so sorry you lost them, Elle... I know how it feels to lose a boa litter and see those poor little babies. (((((((((((((((((ELLE)))))))))))))))))))

The thing that upsets me most is that I was out this weekend, for my birthday. And I could have been here to check on her Saturday and this morning to see how she was doing. I could have caught the babies in time to get them misted and seperated into their appropriate boxes. At the very least I could have seen if they were still borns or not?

Lunar is in a sorry state now that she has given birth. Shes skin and bones so I tube fed her puree' mouse, critical care and nutribal and will do every 5 days until shes gained a bit of weight. Shes still not wanting to eat and I am afraid I may lose her. It's been 10 months since she ate and now she had just given birth to 5 huge babies!

Now that she's given birth, hopefully she'll want to start eating again! That did it for my Dumeril's girl. Sending good thoughts, vibes, and warm fuzzies your way.

Oh Elle, I'm so sorry!! I can't even imagine how difficult this must be for you. I hope mom recovers quickly.

She didn't show any interest whatsoever tonight. I had to tube feed her, I don't know if she will make it through tonight. She really is in a horrible state. This is how she looks from half way down...

Elle, I hate to say this but if she is not eating and is continueing to lose weight you may want to consider euthanisa

I'll just add this to my long list of snake disasters this year alone. I thought having a snake die from IBD was as bad as it could get. But seeing those wee babies just broke my heart. If I could throw the towel in on my snakes and sell them all I would probably be considering it... This has just completely disheartened me.

David, MOST boas don't eat at all during pregnancy. My female Dumeril's didn't eat for 8 months. Elle's still recovering from giving birth to 5 enormous babies.

Lunar hasn't eaten since the 24th of December 2008.

She bred on the 30th of December. So that's been a 10 month gestation without any food. The fact that she survived that alone is a miracle.

Oh no, I'm sorry Elle. I doubt there is anything I can say to make you feel better, but I am truly sorry. Sending good thoughts your way for Lunar.

((((Elle)))) I'm so sorry to hear about the babies not making it. That's so heartbreaking.

I'm assuming she at least had a good weight on her before she was bred to be able to survive it. I'm really hoping she pulls through for ya, Elle.

Of course, she was fed up and cycled by the previous owner. It was a case of stick em together on my behalf. Once I had witnessed breeding I split them up and waited.... and waited.... for 10 long months. For it all to come to nothing but tears :(

You may want to leave your inexperienced opinions at the door. She has only just given birth, and hasn't had a real chance to recuperate yet.

I can't and wont give up on her.

I am thinking about the snake and the suffering it is going through.

I like how you are basing your opinion on the assumption that she is suffering.

She is thin, probably starving and yes perhaps sore and uncomfortable. But I won't be euthanising her based on the fact she is worse for wear from just going through a natural process...

Nobody euthanised your mother after she gave birth to you....
