The official Black Milksnake thread!!

Haha true dat!!!

And yes this one will eat no matter what stage of blue she is in. How funny 2 out of 3 mine do the same as yours come to think of it! My oldest girl who is about 4 years old will sometimes refuse in blue. But that's maybe 60% of the time in those cases. So even if she is in the deepest stage of blue come feeding day I will try her just in case she wants to eat. But yeah my other 2 dont care, they just open up and start chowing on whatever I place in front of them, my arm included if I happen to have any mousey/rat scent on it :)

Trickster my parents gave me the O.K. in any snake I want as long as I can feed to pay it if its going to be eating massive amounts and it cant get long and big around like a python or something if it stays fairly skinny then length does not matter. O and it cant be hot

I'm gonna revive this thread just a bit, because I'm excited :). Markus' girl, Ebony, will be joining me a little over a week from now. I've wanted one for such a long time, and this is my chance to have the perfect lady from a very nice gentleman who is about to get married. Reading this entire thread all over again makes me realize just what a great species these snakes are, and what a good girl I'll be getting in Ebony.

Yep. I can't wait. I'm decorating her viv even as I type. Nothing's too good for Markus' (soon to be my) Ebony!

She slurped up a yummy rat last night and is sleeping it off :D She will be there with you before you know it! I sure will miss her!! But the space is badly needed for my wife to be. So I gotta put the wife before the snake love  If anyone else is looking for one of these I have a 4 ft male for sale too. PM me.

They truly are one of the most wonderful and easy snakes to care for out there!

Hey! I can FINALLY be a member of the Black Milksnake thread and Club :). Ebony arrived today. Since she's blue, I put her into her viv to settle in, and only got this one photo of her so far. Once she sheds, though--look out! LOL! Even seeing only part of her as she disappears under the aspen, you can tell she's a beauty :).

That's a great offer, Heather. Thank you :). I think I'd need to study up on what to do before making a decision, though.

Sooooo.... when Z came home, he wanted to see Ebony, so we took her out for a quick photo shoot. You can tell by looking at her eyes and some of her skin that she's blue, and should shed soon-ish, but dang if she still isn't gorgeous! So, here she is, my Girl, Ebony :). Innit she a beauty?:

I don't unfortunately. Sorry bout that. I don't have a scale and have never really done the weight tracking with my critters.

RE: Black Milk Trend?

Hello black milk enthusiasts! First - what an outstanding thread, I've had it bookmarked for several months as I've been researching these incredible animals, thanks to all those who've shared their knowledge and especially the photos!

Second - in my research, in addition to books and journals, I've been through several online forums culling knowledge and information about the black milk and noticed a trend that may or may not be due to coincidence.

*Note, I'm sure many of you due not fall under this 'observed trend', and it's definitely more prevelant among breeders.*

It seems to me that the majority of black milk owners and breeders begin their time with the species on-fire. The praise for the snakes is overflowing and incredibly enthusiastic. Many describe the black milk as the perfect snake with easy care requirements, beautiful coloring as both a juve and adult, wonderful temperment, and willingness to breed and produce large clutches.

But, at some point, the novelty of the animal seems to wear off. Many breeders and owners I've contacted looking for available animals no longer have black milks. Many simply indicate they've moved on to other projects, lost interest, and sold off their black milks.

Now, I know the hobby and business is ever changing and interests/focus can switch quickly because of the multitude of animals available to work with. But, it seems odd that an animal as unique and well-praised as the black milk is so readily and consistently phased in and phased out.

Is it the lack of interest in the animal after the color change is complete? The feeding or space requirements for it's large adult size? The lack of a challenge to keep such an easy-going animal?

Bottom line, to my observation, a lot of people who keep or breed other snakes like corns, BPs, kings, and other milks seem more apt to stick with their species of choice over the long haul than those that work with black milks.

I'm very close to obtaining a pair and if anybody has any insight on my so-called trend or wants to call me crazy, please do so.

Thanks again...

I only sold 2 of mine because I am getting married and have the smallest apartment on the planet. My wife to be needs to be able to live in it with me too and I had to make some sacrifices in order for it to happen. My snakes take up alot of space in my tiny home that we desperately need for furniture and storage for ourselves, so I had to downsize. As we grow together and can afford more spacious housing, I will be stocking back up on Black Milks first thing! I had 4 and now have 2, so I am not totally out of the Black Milk scene yet :D The pair that I have left are available for the time being on fauna. I may change my mind soon though. And I myself have not noticed the trend that you have, only two breeders that I know of firsthand have moved out of breeding Black Milks and they are both now working with very high end Drymarchon's and the like.

About the only thing I can think of is that many breeders seem to be "into" different color morphs for the snakes of their choice. AFAIK, Black Milksnakes only come in one color--black (once adult). Breeders seem to like the challenge of producing something new and different. Certainly, they can't have any complaints about the beauty, temperaments, and care of these amazing animals.

Thanks for the input! I can imagine housing 4 adults in anything other than a rack system would take up quite a bit of space, and even with a rack, they'd eat up apartment space...

Yeah 4x2 vivs take up quite a bit of wall space indeed :)

Someday I would like a nice rack system, but the expense right now is too great with the other priorities I must tend to for finances and starting a life with someone. HOWEVER, down the road...when the time is right... :D
