The official Black Milksnake thread!!

By the way, I have a couple of questions.

How long does the full transformation to solid black take?

Do most/all turn out to be such a solid black?

And lastly, are they somewhat common at reptile shows and/or online?

CaptBogart already replied to the majority of your questions, but I actually did see a male for sale at the last KC Reptile Show. I was pretty surprised. I haven't contacted the breeder to see if he plans on breeding more this year or not, but I will be doing that soon.
As for looking online, they can be found, but it's not common. I looked for my breeder for a good 6 months before I finally found him. He's an awesome guy, and i'll be getting a female from him this year. :)

Well, with Heather with a pair of black milks and Catherine with a couple of black milks, there might very well be an explosion of black milks in a couple of years.

I hope so!!! :D

I hope so too! I'm not usually a huge fan of Milk Snakes, especially tri-colored, but these are a with out a doubt going on my want list. Thanks for the replies everyone, you all have Beautiful snakes, and hopefully I will someday find one as well.

Shazam - 09/22/2009

Here are a few pics of Shazam on the 22nd... I forgot to weigh him before I fed him (OOOPS). Total weight with mouse - 126 grams. Sorry... all pics are of him in his weight tub.

He's much bigger than his sibling Solstice... but NOWHERE near as dark (as you shall see).

I'm kinda concerned that he isn't darkening up... but otherwise he's quite healthy. LOL.
DSC02870.jpg

I'll try to update his own thread, but wanted to include him in the "Black Milk" thread too!

Pics of Solstice and Eclipse coming up next.

Here's Solstice. I believe she's a sibling to Shazam.
DSC02883.jpg

As you can see, she's MUCH darker than Shazam, but weighs almost less than half of him at 68 grams.
DSC02885.jpg

This pic shows how you can look at her one way and see "black" and another way and see "red".
DSC02894.jpg

I've got to find some "markers" to tell them apart. I don't know how I'm going to be able to do that when they've made the change to all black...
DSC02902.jpg

Here's her last pick here... I'll see about perhaps making one for the three of them (Shazam, Solstice & Eclipse).
DSC02910.jpg

I want to thank Catherine (Jynx) for allowing me to have them for at least a little while. They're such DEAR snakeys!

Pics of Eclipse up next!

Eclipse - 09/22/2009

Here's Eclipse. He's unrelated to Shazam and Solstice. He's smaller than both of them and only slightly darker than Shazam (obviously not as dark as Solstice... LOL).
DSC02916.jpg

He weighs less than either of the other two... 65 grams.
DSC02919.jpg

See how he's just a TAD darker than Shazam?
DSC02926.jpg

He's so HANDSOME! I guess I'm biased though. :D
DSC02929.jpg

He looks all calm, but out of the three, he's the most spastic! LOL.
DSC02938.jpg

Well, I hope you enjoyed these three!!! Again, I'd like to thank Catherine for entrusting them to me.

I'll see about a thread for them... or should they have separate threads???? Tell me what you think! ;)

Fred, they look great! I can't believe how dark Solstice is at her small stature. That's insane! And it looks like Shazam's coming along well. The yellow bands around his face are starting to brown out which means they'll be disappearing before you know it.

Just so everybody else knows, Joakim is in blue, so as soon as he sheds, i'll take him out for a photo shoot. He just had to go into blue as soon as I was ready to get some more pictures of him. ;) So I imagine within about a week, he'll be ready in his brand new skin.

I wish I had taken them out earlier in the day to take better pics than (in the weight tub) pics. Oh, well. Perhaps next week!

Thanks, Suzy and Oren!

Fred they look wonderful! I'm very hapopy to see them. I miss those little buggers so much :(

Solstice is indeed a full sister to Shazam, while Eclipse is completely unrelated. I didn't quite understand why she got so dark that soon either. Eclipse is older than her by about 3 months, and I assumed that may give him the upper hand when it comes to the change, but that took a left turn about 6 months ago.

Thank you so much for putting up pics of them. Give them snake snuggles for me!

Thanks for clearing that all up, Catherine! I just want to be absolutely sure before I say something. I don't like "retractions". LOL.

It'll be fun watching to see how soon and in what order they'll all reach "oily black" goodness! You gotta know that I love them already. I'm even thinking of switching things around to get at least two of them into display cages.

Of course I saw this thread after I fed Coal and remembered I was supposed to get updated pics.... someone post in here again in three days to remind me, lol...

I was at the New England Reptile Expo today and I wasn't expecting to get anything, just mice and crickets. I ended up coming home with a male 09 Black Milk. The funny thing is I was reading all the threads on here this morning before I went and how you can't find them at shows and stuff. I was walking by the vendor and he pulled out the father to the snake I got to show people and I was amazed. It was probably one of the most impressive and beautiful colubrids I have ever seen, easily 6ft+. I did a couple of pass by's after that until finally I decided to buy one. He is 2 weeks old on Monday and is still in his first shed and hasn't eaten yet. The breeder told me I shouldn't have a problem getting him to eat and if I do just to contact him and he can do an extange or give me my money back. He was extremely help full and gave me all his infomation and a 3 page care sheet. I can understand why you all are so crazy for them now. I can't wait until mine gets big and jet black! With no less to do here is my Black Milk Snake!

OOOOOHHHHh!!!! Congrats to you!!!! Even in "blue" don't they look LOVELY??? Wow! I wish I were there to see all the little ones.

I'm so happy for you and that we now have one more person to keep this thread alive. :)

Did I say, "Congrats!!!"? :D

Wow! Congrats on the beautiful guy! :) I think you should definitely do a progression thread of him, too. I love my Black Milk, and I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't get a female from the same breeder this year. I may end up getting an unrelated female from the herp show later on this year. Woohoo for Black Milks! :)

Thanks guys! I'm actually wicked excited! After everything I've heard about these guys and wanting on for awhile I never thought I'd be lucky enough to get my hands on one. I really wish I grabbed a picture of the father to, he was awesome! I thought it was realy cool that he had hatchlings, yearlings, and the father there so you could really see the how they change as they grow and how fast they grow.

Congrats Brewster! I wish I would have had enough extra cash to get my hands on one too, but they were absolutely amazing. The adult they had was incredible. I wish I would have taken pictures, and I hope that there might have been some people to also take photographs. I really love the milk snake though brewster, big congrats to you!

Coal

Fred reminded me to get pics of Coal and wouldn't you know it, he's in blue! Oh well, I grabbed some pics anyway... This is in front of the planted end cap of a rack in the snake room...
