The Official LOTR Fan Thread

Hey everyone

Now, as you probably guessed from the title, I'm a fan of the Lord of the Rings trilogy plus The Hobbit and the books that follow the trilogy (The Silmarillion etc.)

I thought I'd make a thread to give all the LOTR fans here on the forum a place to chat about it. It can be absolutely anything concerning the books, flims, replicas etc.

Now, I need your advice. :)

I like the replicas of the movie weapons and things like that. I already own Aragorn's Ranger sword but since I get paid tommorow, I wanted to expand my collection :)

So, should I go for Legolas's twin blades OR his bow (newly released and fully functional). I've had some training in archery so I know how to use a bow properly etc. However, the bow is an official replica, but it was made for the Italian market; so all the information and certificate will be in Italian lol. Plus, the bow comes with a bag and two functional arrows with feathered flights (yeah I'm a freak...) Both are fully functional replicas made by United Cutlery, the primary producer of LOTR replica weapons who also made movie props.

So, if you could help me with my decision then that would be great :) (I would have made a poll but I thought that if this thread is gonna be around for a while, then it might spoil it after I've come a final decision)

Legolas's Knives - 1

Legolas's Bow - 1

Thanks everyone

David

I will admit to being another LOTR geek... When the movie came out I ate at Burger King like every day so I could collect the little happy meal toys. (I still have them somewhere). I loved the books The Hobbit and LOTR trilogy (but couldn't ever finish The Silmarillion.)
I'd go with the bow, I just associate Legolas more with the bow than the knives.

I'm a huge fan of the LOTR books and The Hobbit and Silmarillion. I've read all of them dozens of times. I like the films, but there's a lot I don't like about them too. I like Elijah Wood in a lot of stuff, but I don't like him as Frodo. Peter Jackson and Wood completely wimpified a great character.

I'd go with the blades. :)

Thanks for the input, that's one for each :)

Yeah the bow does tend to opitimise Legolas's character. However, the blades do come with a plaque :)

Oh and Dean, I fully agree with you. TBH, I don't know how the movie Frodo managed to make it that far. I'm surprised he didn't commit suicide in Lorien.

Im a future fan I guess, I started reading the books, and loved the way the author wrote, it felt like he was sat right there with you, having a cuppa coffee and a chat, I loved it, but I stopped reading them for some reason, after "his dark materiels (Philip Pullman)" I shall return to LOTR, so maybe in a few week ill report back and give you my opinion on the books :D

LOL. Or maybe Sam should have just carried him from Lothlórien to Mordor on his back, as Frodo stared wistfully into the camera muttering "Oh Sam" in his fakey British accent over and over again. :grin01:

Mmm. As a long-time LOTR fan and also a Designated Hobbit Fancier, I must caution you to be careful with fanfic links. Things can get pretty "dubious", pretty fast!

Cool thread! I just set the back ground of my lap top to some orrigional LOTR fan art! (A cool painting of sam warding off the giant spider who tries to eat Frodo).

I admit, I have never actually read all the way through the books. I've gotten to two towers and my mind wandered... I do have an illustrated copy of the Simirillian, and today I am going to try to get an illustrated copy of Fellowship. For those of you who've read all, which would you recommend reading first? I'm thinking I should read the trilogy first, then the Simirillian, for a better understanding. I tried to read the Simirillian before, but just ended up looking at all the pictures.

I'm actually about to head to the mall right now to look for said Illustrated copy of Lord of the Rings. I read about a book a week - two weeks, because I live far away from my university and read on the bus. Right now I'm reading the Golden Compass Trilogy, and while it's a fun story, it is a very easy read, and goes by a bit too quickly. For my next "adventure" I would like to visit Middle Earth in a way only a book can provide.

Quick Edit: (Cause my parent's aren't ready to leave yet!)
I remember one of the first times I realized I was different than the "other kids" was when I couldn't honestly gripe with them when we read the Hobbit in Middle School. I loved it, and allowed myself to be engulfed in the world. Maybe I should re read the Hobbit again as well!

Here are pictures of the two so you can get an idea of how they look:

Thanks Jess, that's great that you read so much. After I've finished reading Micheal Chrichton's 'Next' I'm going to re-read the Hobbit and the trilogy.

Tell us how your search went!

All the best

The blades are absolutly beautiful! So elegant and decorative, however if you are wanting to be hands on with your new "toy" go with the bow... I dunno how I would use the blades at all... perhaps to chop some chicken.

I can never accept Elijah Wood as Frodo, because I will always associate him as "the boy with the big flippin fish". Flipper was the first movie I ever saw with Elijah in it.

Big fan here, and I have to agree with the Elijah Woods bashing. Even my daughter commented along the lines of "I wish he'd get killed so he stops whining". The roles should have been reversed for Frodo and Sam. Now they just need to release "The Hobbit" on the big screen to tell the story...

Get the bow, man!

I went through a HUGE Micheal Chrichton Phase myself! Jurassic Park, Lost World, Sphere, The Andromeda Strain, Timeline, Prey, and Disclosure are the ones I've read so far. I also have Eaters of the Dead laying in wait.

Well, the store I went to only had the Trilogy illustrated by Alan Lee in a package deal. My mother strongly suggested I ask for it for Christmas. ;) I did find a reasonably priced illustrated version of The Hobbit, so l bought that!

I'll probably end up reading the soft back books after The Hobbit. It will be exciting to read through the story again with Alan Lee's Illustrations!

Does anyone have any favorite LOTR artists? Besides Alen Lee I really like John Howe's work.
Here's a link to his website, you can't view anything very large, but I guess I understand that. Just makes it harder to set an image as your wallpaper. muahaha

And this is my lap top's background right now.. =D

It's a nice coincidence this thread was started today, I just found this web page last night. Yea ya...after watching the movies... ;)

Sorry I can't say much about the Characters, plot, themes.. Perhaps once I start reading =D I do have to say that I am pretty impressed with how developed Gollum's character is at least in the movie.. I figure they just chose to "specialize" in him for sake of condensing the movie. I can't wait to really get to know "everyone".

I think the pattern in the daggers are wonderful, but I would have to say go with the bow as I think bows are just awesome!

Thanks for the input guys.

I'm having second thoughts about the bow (I haven't bought it though). The reason for this being is that the manufacturers say that it's functional, but they seem to be adopting a 'one size fits all' policy. For those of you who have any knowledge of archery, you know that this simply isn't the case (apart from like two practice bows with different arrows). So I think if I do get either of them, it'll be the knives.

I'm also a big fan. I let myself get caught up in the movies and didn't even notice how much I hated "Frodo" till like Return of the King. I don't know how it escaped me. I think I brought a lot of my own enthusiasm along till then..

I must represent my LOTR geekness. I have read the books numerous times. Although I like the "grandness" that Peter Jackson used to make the movies, there were many choices he made that I did not like.

I have never been into collecting things, but an ex-girlfriend gave me this:

Legolas is hot...

Um, yeah...That's all I have to say...

Legolas or Orlando Bloom? :eek::sidestep:

I did a "Legolas" google image search, it took about 7 pages for anything other than Orlando Bloom's picture to show up.
Hrm, I kinda like this one?

I'm really enjoying my illustrated version of The Hobbit! Although, within the first chapter I already have found something to gripe about concerning the movie. :uhoh:
The hobbits were all cast to thin! Sam's character is the truest example, yet Gollum continually calls him the "fat one".

My favorite line so far (in The Hobbit) is, "Gandalf sat at the head of the party with the thirteen dwarves all round: and Bilbo sat on a stool at the fireside nibbling at a biscuit, trying to look as if this was all perfectly ordinary and not in the least an adventure".

Reminds me of myself on a night when I don't want to go out, and suddenly I'm deaf to my cell phone and IM messanger.
