The start of a very sad day....

Today I feel will be a very sad day all around...My lovely day started out liek any other:
I was up at 2am making my BF's lunch and getting him ready for work.
I went into the living room and checked on everyone..all my snakes and other animals...
My Chameleon was asleep but hanging from his branch..which is weird. He only hangs when he is climbing down ..so I picked him up and replaced his little green butt back on the branch he sleeps on.I went back to bed.
4:17am..I woke with this feeling that something was worng. So anagin I went into the living room..when I opened the door..I smelled something bad.
I got really scared..and started checking snakes..everyone was fine, alll frogs were acounted for...then i looked at Mr. 'meleon...I didnt see him..I goot really sick to my stomach as I made my way to his cage..there he was..on the floor of his cage..I picked him up, and sure enough he was dead. he was stilll soft and fairly warm (from his night heating lamp)..like he just passed.
...............I started to ball my eyes out and I am still not over it.
the strangest thing is..that he was never treated poorly by me. He always had food, and water and a clean cage..just last night before bed he was walking around all happy, drinking water from his leaves and branches..just as green as he could be...nothing ever seemed wrong...'cept for this morning..
I am feeling very upset and very angry..
I guess sometimes these things just happen..
But I am going to miss my little man..

"CLOAK" aka "'Meleon"

Aww, how cute he was. I'm so sorry for your loss, Amanda. I'm sure he had a very wonderful life with you. ((((((Amanda)))))

Thanks guys..it makes me feel a bit better knowing that you guys are here to listen to me fuss about things..
He really was an amazing little guy.
everything I have read about keeping them..says.."they will not use a water dish"..But I always kept a very shallow saucer with fresh water that was cahnged 3 times daily for hi..and he always used it..he also drank from the leaves and branches..but he knew there was water there for him..
also they said.."don't handle them too much, they don't like it"
everytime I went to change his water..he'd climb out on me..
I have had countless nights where he had fallen asleep on my finger while I was watching a movie..he was a strange little man..But none the less will be missed forever.
I am thinking about planting he plany in a bigger pot and keeping it as a reminder of him.

Thanks again for the warm wishes and ....HUGS!..

Hope you guys have a good rest of the day.

Aw, I'm sorry, Amanda. Chams just don't have very long lifespans. Maybe it was his time.

I know..it still sucks though.
I have always wanted a Cham..for as long as I can remember.
I got him in April...I didnt know much about him, as they man at the expo..didnt seem to and was too busy to even talk to me it seemed..But looking in his rather large deli cup..and seeing those little mittys going "open close, open close"..I fell in love with this guy...and for $45 I thought it was worth it...
I just wish now that I knew more about him...his history anyway.
Thats the last time I buy from someone like that..I learned my lesson..even if it has nothing to do with the way he was raised...still......

(sigh)..I will stick to my snakies for now...

Thanks a ton Nanci ((( )))

It sounds like he enjoyed your company. And he passed peacefully in his sleep. I don't think you did anything to cause it.

His last evening: happy, active, green. Not the picture of an animal whose care is lacking.

So sorry for your loss!

It is difficult to accept, even when you cared for him so carefully.

But, as Nanci said, they have very short lifespans. And they sometimes just die for no apparent reason. I always try to steer new lizard keepers away from them, and towards beardies or leopard geckos, for those very reasons. Chameleons are so odd and cute, but you have to be prepared that they won't be with your for a really long time, and can have life threatening problems before you even know there is a problem. It is a shame that sellers don't always disclose this to buyers.

But it sounds like he had a good lizard life for the time he was with you, and you enjoyed his company. So that is the part you have to remember the most.

Sorry to hear your bad news, Amanda. Your 'uneasy feeling' reminds me of just how close so many of us get to our pets. Hang in there.

Well put. I'm sorry for your loss, and just know it wasn't your fault. He may have just been old, or had something progressive that you had no idea about. Best wishes!.

I know...all my animals should know they come before me..They didn't ask to be in my care...so I give them all they need..sometime too much..just ask my cat who insists right now that I share my Kickin' Crab and sweet corn chowder with him...lol..or my Macaw who thinks he needs a chunk of my multi grain crust from the edge of my Grilled Cheese sandwich..haha

I know I did my reasearch on many different species before I made my purchase. I do really like Baerdies and Geckos..But..EVERYONE has 'em..
(which should tell me something ..huh?)
but I am so in Love with Chams..I did know that they sometimes don't always last that long..But its a hard fact to face when the day actually comes.
kinda a punch in the ego.
...I think I am going to stick with my snakes for a while.there are still some Rat snake species that I'd like to own..I don't plan on replacing Mr .'Meleon anytime soon....Thank you very much kathy...:wavey:

Thank you..It is really weird..I woke from a dead sleep...I just hope my life will be free of death for a little while..fingers crossed.
