I posted an ad on craigslist looking for a Hog Island Boa and someone replied saying they had a male. I couldn't get that one because he wanted 125 for him. At the last minute he offered me a Hogg Island/Columbian cross and I just had to take it. He came all the way from Oregon for delivery. We chatted about a half hour and he was really cool.

Parents are both small so he guaranteed not bigger than 5 feet. I really really wanted a boa and I could not pass up this offer. She is off in quarantine at the moment in another room. It's not being used so I figure that would be a great place for her right now. I haven't touched or tried to feed her. I am giving her a week to settle in.

I came home and I had to keep checking in on her. I think I may try to move her into a bigger home soon. I'm kind of broke now until payday. LOL. That's what I get!!

I took a few photos from the cage without bothering her too much.

I think I have decided on Callisto. It's still Xmen related but also used in Xena. ;)

Here is my new pretty girl...
Her birthday is June 15th, 2008.

There's something weird about her eye, maybe it's how the photo was taken... But otherwise she looks very pretty.

She was sleeping. I'll take a look at it thought to make sure. I just really don't want to disturb her. It was a 2 hour trip for her to come here.

Lol, now there's going to be a boom in Hogg/Col crosses in Washington. I just got one, too... =)

Congrats! She's beautiful! I also can't wait to see more pics... And to hear that the weird eye in the pic was just a smudge on the glass. ;)

$125 was too much? Oy, prices in Canada really are inflated ;_;

I hope to see some better pictures soon!

The glass was a little dirty. lol. I did manage to get a few more photos of her. I'm really happy I put something for her to climb on. I can't help myself.. I just had to look in on her again.

I found her doing this:

Her eye is 3 toned! LOL White on top, black in the middle, and grey on the bottom. That is so funky.. LOL

Sorry about the glare. The flash bounces off the glass.

125 was too much at the moment. I only had 75. And he gave her to me for that much. I was very happy. I am getting some money for my birthday though. I need get some bigger feeders.

you know, I have a feeling that snake might get bigger than he claimed. A cross doesnt mean its going to stay small and those crosses do get bigger.

He said both parents were under 5 feet. I'll cross that bridge when I get there though. I'm okay with it. I'll just get help and start saving up for one of those cool cages for the future. :)

I personally don't see much hogg island in that baby. *shrugs* and Yes, I would definatly count on it being 6 foot plus. Cross's dont stay as small as the smallest parent.

I have seen some who remain small, and I own a couple of such crosses who are a deal smaller, by far, than your normal BCI...
It's all about the percentage of Hogg influence.
Some get bigger, some remain quite small.

Well if she reaches epic proportions I know who to give her to. LOL. Totally j/k. She's funny. Do Boas normally like to hang out exposed? Right now she's on her branch looking out with her tail in her (apparent) favorite green bowl. It's pretty funny. Luckily the branch I put in there fit perfectly so she hang on it. :) I'm trying not to handle her. I have to keep checking on her though. It's very hard.

Awesome snake...and I think her eyes are rad.

THanks. I'm a little over eager. I really want to handle her, but I know the rules about giving her a week to settle in. Eek. I just keep looking in on her. Boas are just very cool.

I went and visited a friend who had 60 or so boas and various other snakes. I fell in love with all the boas.

Here are some new photos of Callisto. I had to get her out for photos and she was a champ about it and super sweet. She loves her branch and sleeps on it often. I was laying on the floor with her last night and she crawled up my arm and fell asleep. It was really cute. lol.

Regardless of how large she gets I will still enjoy her.

Enjoy the photos..

She is a very nice boa. We had one little strikey incident though. My cat got her in the face so she hissed and tried to strike. I try to handle the snake out of my room or put my cats away. They are such brats. Urgh.

As for your question- Boas definitely are more of a showoff than colubrids.
First off they are incredibly arboreal, but beyond that, I think that it's partially because that in the wild they are top predators in their environment whilst colubrids are... much less so.

BCI's are definitely my favorites

I'm slowly getting into Boas. They're really great snakes. I just thought they were too large. I really enjoy Callisto. She's very calm and likes to perch on her branch all day. I got a lot of photos I'll be sharing when I get home. Still need to get photos of her parents and I will post those too.

She is always out and about. I see her hiding once in a blue moon. lol. :)

Thea, she's gorgeous! I'm getting sucked into boas, too, lol... They're WAY too friendly! Snakes that beautiful and nice just aren't fair for true snake addicts.

I just wish my girl was as active as yours--oddly enough, my Osiris is more of a burrower! :shrugs: Hopefully she'll change her mind when I can upgrade her caging and get her a nice, big branch to climb on instead of just her wimpy vine. =)

Yes, I was entranced with all my friends Boas. They were all too sweet and handleable. You know being so fearful of them back than I thought they were absolutely terrifying.. But.. Mine isn't terrifying! LOL She's so sweet. Just likes to coil around my wrist for a while.

(I saw your message on Iherp. You all found me too quick.LOL.. There is no hiding anything huh? I think Iherp will be worse than myspace.. I've strayed away from it.. )
