Hello, I recently emailed the administration and asked if there was any future plans on adding a forum or sub-forum, a place where we can discuss our vivarium stacks, builds, setups, equipment, etc. Where we can help others in their questions and concerns about their snakes living arrangement. Maybe help with some how to's also, "how do I install this" or "how should I build this" "how can I do this or that".

As soon as I buy my house I'm going to take part of my garage and start constructing a viv stack and I would love to be able to come to a sub-forum and post to show it and get some help/ideas from you great people.

The admins replied back with the response of him not minding the idea but would want to see a high demand/request for it. Hopefully it would make a great addition to the site and not go to waste. I suppose we could post these things anywhere, but would be great to have a section directly for viv/cage talk.

Thank you for you're time and future input.

I don't see why that doesn't fall under Husbandry.

I thought I should have posted this there after I hit the submit button. Kinda smacked myself in the forehead after that with a homer d'oh.

But in husbandry yes people post there, but this would be all about vivs without the rest of the stuff that's posted there. Just an idea though, :) I'm trying to help out with this lovely Community.

I think it's a great idea and this is why...

It's nice to have specific pinned topics with FAQs. When I first came here (and I know it's not just me), I was searching, searching, searching and asking Nanci a million (exaggeration) questions. Anything to help the newbies and make their learning experience better is good.

OH...and please use tags!

I'm seeing the vote count change but no posts really. Please if you have an opinion, post it here. We would love to hear it. :)

I would love a (sub-)forum like that. The husbandry forum does have a lot of overlaps, that's true, but still... a collection of threads specific on set-ups, how to's and "this is what mine looks like" would bring a lot of ideas in everybody's head I believe.
It seems nice to me to gather them together.

I voted yes. One reason is that I'm planning on building a new enclosure and getting my snake out of the aquarium he's in. It would be nice to have a place to ask viv related questions and get ideas. Some that come to mind are lighting, heat, temp control and thermometers. Also things like vents, locks, hinges, glass. How about safe finishes, which is one thing that I am concerned about with a new viv.

I generally prefer topics to be segmented as to lumped together, so would vote yes, as long as it doesn't create extra work on mods. Sometimes people post in the wrong section (one could argue this thread is), and mods have to move stuff. I see there is a DIY subforum, is this different?

I should add that this is mostly because of the general chit chat forum. I always wished there was "other snakes," "other herps," and "other pets" type subforums. I'll often look at a forum just to browse threads, but I doubt most people do that. When I'm relatively caught up, "new posts" is about the only button I ever click, though.

I voted "No" as we already have the Husbandry and Basic Care forum with the DIY Projects sub-forum there. There is a sticky already in that forum with the answers to the basic questions. Considering how many times the same questions are asked that are already answered in stickies all over this site, adding more will not change the fact that stickies simply don't get read and the search function not used by those who should use it.

Just in my past couple years as a moderator of the largest gaming site on the internet, the search function and stickies is not always going to answer ones question 100% of the time. It would be nice to have all viv/home/cage/enclosure questions discussions compiled in one spot and not mixed in with basic care. One would simply goto a sub-forum for all their needs for homes rather then having to sift through a bunch of basic care comments and concerns.

It becomes obvious that all more experienced members vote no, and why? Because they don't need to search that forum anymore and so have no problem with the husbandry and basic care forum to be a mix of all things together and as said before me, stickys are general info and will not answer all questions people could have about there vivs. I get irritated if people vote no here just because there is 1 thread or 1 sticky about vivs! Use logic, when does 1 thread answer all questions?? If 1 thread could answer all questions all the time this forum wouldn't have so many threads. Experienced member should think about the people who are new to snakes for who such sub forum would be really useful and should not vote no because they already know the answer to most of those questions.

Consiter that we don't take adding a sub forum or forum lightly around here. There have been many suggested forums over the past years. If we added them all at the drop of a hat this place would get pretty cluttered.

The DIY forum is a place for people to post their DIY projects.. I think usually people put display tanks/ racks that they have made, but DIY can mean anything. If you set up your vivarium by yourself and wanted to show it off, I don't see why that can't go into the DIY.

I'm an old timer, and don't think that adding a vivarium sub forum is necessary, and it's not because I "know everything" already. Our forum has worked very well the way it is now for years. I think the forum was started in 2002?
Also, it seems like the sub forums that we have added, the DIY and Photography tips and techniques are not used nearly as much as the other forums. The "post your viv" thread is fun, but I don't think enough people make threads solely on what their viv looks like and how it's set up to fill a forum. Corn Snake care is not hard, it's covered in the stickied posts.

My last point will be, when I was a new comer, I found information quite easily. I looked at care sheets on this forum, as well as personal websites, I browsed the forums frequently, I did searches when necessary. The information is here in abundance. I don't remember having any problems with understanding Corn Snake requirements.

I voted no because of what is said above...

I think that if you have a question on building your own cage/viv/rack, then it could go into the DIY Sub-forum and anything else can be covered in the Husbandry section. Just my $0.02...

And i'm off to start a new "post your viv" so it isn't so huge cause i wanna see people's vivs :D

Well, vivariums has always been a big topic for snakes/critters etc...i thought everyone would have had it's own forum.. :p

Maybe the forum should have went

Husbandry/living style
Basic care/health issues
Feeders/feeding problems.

speaking of feeders...today is feeding day...i need to get to the store soon and get my garter snake some mice..
